My 700th Review... Day 63 of my travels - A landmark moment in my life, finding Boys Town. How am I the first to review this town? I found one review but it was about the gardens. I will try my best to capture what this town is about...I hope I can do it justice. It must be faith, I mean fate. I didn't plan for my 700th to be on Girls and Boys Town. I had 698 and I had 2 reviews to write, the last one on this historic spot. It's the only historic landmark in Omaha. For me this was deep because I found this place on pure accident. I needed a place to rest before I could drive again and Nebraska was the midway point for me. I found my hotel and it's right next to Boys Town, USA. I never even knew quite where it was. When I came to this country as an immigrant, all I did was watch TV. On Satuday afternoons, they always used to play black and white movies. I am sad this tradition has ended. But the movies I always used to see were, "It's a Wonderful Life," and "Boys Town" with Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney. Spencer Tracy won an Oscar and the movie was a huge hit and became part of American culture. It coined the phrase, "There is no such thing as a bad boy," or "He ain't heavy, he's my brother." The famous scene when the brother carries the younger kid on his back to Boys Town. And the founder, Father Flannegan truly believed there were no boys who wanted to be bad. In the early 1900s after World War I, there were a lot of orphan, homeless, and back then called wayward kids. Nowadays we call them, at risk children. Father Flannegen who was from Ireland was tired of trying to help destitute men, some were too old now to reach and just set in their ways. He felt children had a better chance and they were already being neglected. With borrowed money he rented a house for boys, then he bought a farm later, always fighting with creditors and borrowing more money. Eventually a town rose from it, all privately funded. You guys probably see the commercials for the boys and girls hotline on TV. It's part of the program. When I drove around the town, walked through the museum, saw the tomb I was moved to tears. It's truly one of the greatest things I've seen human beings do for one another. Each person I told about this place, were amazed at it's existence. The kids run the town. They have a police department, they make their own newspaper, have their own mayor, are champions at sports. Also to see things from the early 1900s with black boys and white boys playing together. And later girls who were very at risk with sexual abuse finally finding a save haven. They also have a Protestant church and Catholic church, so as not to have any intolerance to religion, and the kids are mixed around in homes to mix up races, sexes, and religions and have married counselors there to give them a sense of family. What makes me sad is. This isn't even my history. It's a borrowed history. My parents aren't aware of this place. Sadly, neither are most people I know of my generation. You would have to go back a few generations for this place to be common knowledge. And maybe that's why I've always felt like I am a borrower. Borrower of a culture, a history that isn't mine, but it makes me live life as some people say crazy or weird, or in Korean moodehpoh (reckless bravado) because I am on borrowed time. Maybe I am weird to be moved so much by this town, or know these kinds of things. I remember after learning about Boys Town, I asked myself all the time since childhood, is there really such a thing as a bad kid? I've been going back and forth with it for my whole life and this movie has stuck with me my whole life and so has this town. Like the nut I am, as soon as I got here I kept thinking, what can I do to help this place? Is it to late to get a degree in some form of counseling and therapy? Am I too old to become a Priest? I offered a silent prayer. But I am getting ahead of myself. From this moment, as long as I live. I want to help. And maybe the legacy of Girls and Boys Town can live on in a small way through this review and through my actions. Maybe Yelp is good for more than one thing yeah? I am trying to prove that every once in a while with a review. One review at a time....

Boys Town is a great organization to visit. There is so much history here in Nebraska, from the looks of things father Flanagan was ahead of his time. Who would have known that his legacy would live on for so long. I am a true believer in his mission along with everyone else who believes in saving children and healing families.

Church on site, post office etc.

My most recent volunteer activity was with my company, so I had a group of folks I knew from my day-to-day life there with me, but you won't always have that. But that means you'll meet a few strangers to turn into new friends! There is a task for any level of expertise. If you're a newbie, you may just be holding a ladder for a bit. If you're a little green but have some experience you may be able to paint some things. If you're an expert and have experience in certain construction things, they may even have you helping to attach doors and put up drywall. These are just examples, but the point is that no matter your skill-set, don't let it keep you from volunteering. The main "construction" of cement pouring and foundation building is obviously done by actual professionals, so you can't do anything that will mess up the house too bad. I definitely recommend volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. While it may be hot (because most builds have been done during the summer in my experience), and some hard work, it can actually be a lot of fun!

We spent several hours building a home for a very fortunate family. Jordan was our team lead and he was very knowledgeable and communicated with everyone very professionally. If you are reading this, look up Habitat for Humanity and give a few hours to help a family with your sweat labor. Habitat for Humanity is a great organization and they are doing some very good things in Omaha, for the people of Omaha. They have several programs to help families become a home owner.
