The staff were very friendly and explained a few things to us. The view from the terrace was lovely. just inside there was a coffee machine , so you could sit and enjoy the view. we wil visit again for sure and best of all its Free !!!!

Next to Scaplen's court is the Poole Waterfront museum. Having only recently re opened after a huge redevelopment this is the home of the Poole longboat an iron age longboat which was found off the coast and has been preserved. As well as the long boat there is plenty to see from old shops laid out as they would have been in the years past to the stories of the smuggling that took place many years ago and that Poole is known for. There is also areas dedicated to the town as it is now with videos on sunseeker one of the towns biggest companies. There are plenty of car parks within walking distance and you are a stones throw from the quay itself. I am not sure of the cost for entrance as Poole residents get free admission but it is always good to know about the town you live in and The Poole water front museum does that.

This is a museum used a lot by schools in their history curriculum…read more It has a Victorian schoolroom, with everything as it would have been - chalks, slates, cane, abacus, etc. Members of the staff treat the children to Victorian schoolroom ethics. The highlight is that everyone goes in Victorian dress. The children get to see things that were expected of them in that era - chimney cleaning, washing clothes by hand, errand boys etc. After wards their homework is to sum up their opinion of Victorian values and modern values. Scaplens Court is a real asset to Poole and it's children as there is so much local history.

The museum has an…read moreembarrassment of riches, and is by far the best museum of its sort in Western Europe ( especially with the French tank museum , Saumur, on the verge of closing). They have many very rare vehicles, from every tank- producing nation, and have far and away the best collection of British tanks in the world. This is in part because they are the army's custodian for a great deal of captured material ( from WW2, Korea, and the various Gulf wars), and the links to the army are underlined by the fact that it's located within yards of an active army base. The ticket is £13 for an adult- but this allows you return visits in the same year. The killer is the location; it's a long way from any major city, and there is about one train to London per hour). At time of visiting, they had a "Fury" themed display ( most of the Sherman tanks, as well as the Tiger used in filming were borrowed from Bovington).as well as a War Horse" and WW1 exhibition.

I am a big tank aficionado, so my opinion is a bit biased. My last visit on March 12th was the best yet. After shopping at their interesting shop, I purchase my entry pass. I told the cashier that I knew that the Sherman tank used by Brad Pitt in the movie "Fury" was under maintenance and not on display. The cashier calls up senior staff and they give me a personal one-on-one visit with the Sherman tank, which was in the workshop. They did not have to be so nice, but they were, so that only confirms my opinion. Tanks from all eras may be found at this amazing place. The Brits produced the first tank in history, Little Willie, named after German Imperial Crown Prince Wilhelm. Winston Churchill, at the time Lord of the Admiralty, sponsored a committee to investigate the building of a new weapon, the tank. Even without a car, the Tank Museum may be reached by taking British Rail to the Wool Station and taking the 104 bus from the Wool Rail station to the Tank Museum entrance.

A very interesting assortment of fighters and bombers including Prototype #2 of the English Electric Lightning, the first Mach 2 fighter in the world. Visitors are permitted to sit in cockpits of many of the a planes. The museum store sells Airfix model kits (remember those?!). I also noticed a shop near Salisbury Train Station that sold such model kits.

Really interesting volunteers all eager to talk about anything related to the aircraft , they ranged from a retired Vulcan pilot, retired ground crew to anoraks helping restore some of the planes! Virtually everything could be touched, played with, sat in so I think this would be a great place to take kids - although you'd need to keep a close eye on them as it is a little tricky scaling ladders and getting into some of the cockpits. I really puts a different view on many of the aircraft. We also got to have a go in the Link trainer at the end of the visit which was a good fun and I assume gives you some idea of what it is like to fly (I'm not a pilot). If you are an enthusiast of have kids I'd say it was a great way to spend a couple of hours if you are passing by!

What a (as the name suggests) treasure!…read more Firstly, a stunning drive to our destination which always puts you in a good mood (and the baby sat chattering in the back instead of screaming which always helps mummy!) and pulling into a carpark with ample parking which makes us smile was a good start to our day out. When we entered we were greeted by a lovely lady who ushered us through to the museum part. Entry was £8 each for adults, and boo was free as she is under 6. She gave us a map and some information before we entered and then we turned around to the treasure trove within. This is a place that will throw you back into different era's. There is something for everyone ranging from tractors to toys, from clothing to cigarettes. I particularly enjoyed the old alcohol miniatures and paraphernalia, and hubby enjoyed the toys and electronics. There is a massive collection of colourful tractor seats in the last room which is beautiful to see. You can spend hours in front of one cabinet here. The women's hygiene/cleaning products were so fun to see, as was the gorgeous wedding dress donated by a lady who wore it in 1955 (or around then) Collections of many different types of things are on display here (shaving pots, steam engines, tins, signs, tobacco and alcohol stuff, perfume, books etc it just goes on) There is a café attached which we didn't have time to relax in, but it looked lovely. A very small gift shop which I think they could make bigger and have more items for sale, but we got two very humourous postcards and a magnet to take home. I am so glad we came here, boo was enthralled the whole time (only problem she wanted to touch it all haha) Would come again as you would see different things every time.

Relatively new to Bristol opening in 2008 Oakham is a fascinating collection of memorabilia, everything from vintage sweets to huge tractors are on display! It's £6.50 for one adult, or 2 adults and 3 children can get in for just £15! Something for everyone.

A brillant day out sounds boring visiting a forte but the minute you walk in it has your gripped…read more the feeling and the place where it is situated all help you to take you back and feel what is was like to be there when it was built. The kids are given a sheet where they have to hunt for hidden toy mouses. Hint take a small notepad and pencil for the kids to keep count. The videos showing the forte throughout the years as well as videos showing how it was nelected but saved and shows the progress of the restoration. Various displays as well as equipment are all there to see and to touch, as well as mock up of events all help to make the experience a enjoyable one.. The cafe that is situated inside does a lovely cream tea. Also does kids boxes as well a hot and cold meals. The prices you would think would be over the top but I was very shocked at the price as they are very cheap, and the food is lovely..

This childrens farm is amazing - one of the best I have ever been to. Its got a really big car…read morepark, then you enter the farm over a bridge and are surrounded by play areas and walks. There are three main play areas - one for older children with big climbing frames to play on and in - one shaped like a horse is always a big hit! There is a sand pit in the middle great for younger children if you have older ones on the play equiptment. The second play area is for under 6's and is full of little houses which my little ones love, running in and out of the houses. There is also a play barn with straw - which is a bit annoying as the children come out covered in it but they have loads of fun! There is a large picnic area with a few lovely climb on statues, and chickens and ducks wandering around. There is also lots of walks and well signed routes around the farm, along the river and through fields. In the warm weather there is a river to paddle in. In the summer they have tractor rides - a pound each but always a hit! Animals - they dont have many but they have enough to entertain young children - a few pigs, cows, sheep, donkeys, and a little petting area with rabbits, peacocks and chickens. Really the main emphasis is on playing so teh animals are more of a sideline i feel. There is a restaurant and a cafe which is ok, fairly standard fair and not excellent but does the job. There is also a butchers and a bakers - lovely good quality meat. All in all a nice afternoon out - busy in school holidays but very quiet in term time. Its a £2.50 donation each - they leave it to you to put it in the tubs around the farm. Closed on a monday.
