The house has been kept as it was when he lived there. Fascinating history with lots of his personal artefacts still around and the volunteers very keen to share anecdotes. The dining table is laid for dinner and some very famous people ate there. You can just imagine being a guest! The garden is beautiful and worth spending time in. I visited this restored 18th (and, to some extent, 19th) century mansion because it's right next to…read morethe wonderful Salisbury Cathedral, it offers a real - i.e. not inflated, museum-style - glimpse into the life of the upper, or upper-middle class of the time(s) - and because it was raining cats and dogs in Salisbury. on that day. I knew that it was used for the 1995 Jane Austen film adaptation of "Sense and Sensibility" with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet, but that was of very minor concern of my rosy nose (I read Jane Austen as part of my English literature studies - 10 pages, then I decided that life is too short). Mompesson House is run by National Trust, and the staff are volunteers who sacrifice their time to provide visitors with information on the house and the families that lived there (and the collections they accumulated - like the porcelain figurines and the drinking glasses). Amazingly, photography *is* allowed at this place - not a given at a National Trust property. What I liked about Mompesson House in particular is that it did feel like a real place, not a museum - i.e. It wasn't overstuffed. The lady at the entrance was very friendly. She noticed I wasn't an English native speaker and gave me printed notes to the house in decent German (actually, I would have preferred English, but the gesture was nice anyway). There are about 10 rooms that you can visit, plus the garden and a tea house/café. So expect to spend about 45-.60 minutes at this place, depending on just how much you treasure Jane Austen. So, for me it was 45 minutes. There is a small exhibition on the first floor which deals with the 1995 film "Sense and Sensibility" and includes some memorabilia, like e.g. a costume Kate Winslet wore in the film. The current entrance fee for an adult is UKP 6.50, which I think is quite okay, if not really a bargain. Please see my photos to get an impression of Mompesson House.

The bus stop was near from the station. I found the bus and rode on it, at the time I bought the ticket from one bus driver sitting on drinking seat. I can't remember the price but maybe wondered if it was very cheap. After buying the ticket, the driver asked me of my language. Because of sudden, I quickly answered English languages, and the driver gave me an earphone that I can listen to explaining of Stonehenge's guide. I sat on a seat in the back of bus and plugged the earphone into a jack of the seat. If you want to get this tour ticket, you can use online on the website. All of their online tickets are valid for 6 months from the day of purchase.

In many English towns, you can go into a shop or showroom, and immediately recoginise that 'this…read moreused to be the cinema'. Such buildings are fairly common, but the 'cinema which used to be something else' is much rarer. The Odeon in Salisbury is an excellent example. The mediaeval half-timbered frontage is a good sign that the building long predates the invention of the cinematograph. Indeed, it does; it was built as the residence of one John Hall in the 15th Century! In the narrow, high-ceilinged hall, now the foyer, much has been preserved, from the shields and weapons on the walls to the mullioned windows and stone fireplace. Inside the auditorium, though, all is modern. We were there to see a 3D film, a cutting edge technology which makes you feel as if you're actually there. Except for the seats ... they're a bit hard!

This cinema is so gothic that with the right film it is quite an eerie experience just to sit in…read morethe cinema. The first film i watched here was a Harry Potter film, and the cinema felt rather like Hogwarts with gargoyls and stone floors greeting you, then high beamed ceilings when you get into your cinema screen. The architecture of the building is almost distracting! As the building is so old, and odeon have maintained so many original features, the cinema is not the most comfortable as the seats are quite close together and if like me you have long legs this makes you feel rather squashed! It can often feel quite full in the foyer as it is quite small. Don't be detered though, the atmostphere is worth it!

Laurence was quick to find a bypass road and we were able to view the stones, as well as rearranging the day's schedule, so we could attend a 96 round gun salute fired by 14 Regiment Royal Artillery at Stonehenge later that afternoon.
