Leck's Greenhouses & Nursery

Leck's Greenhouses & Nursery

This time of the year, when I start to clean out flower beds, instead of putting them to rest, I love the splashes of fall colors to make them come alive again. Gardening is one of my true passions and one of the nice things about living where you have four seasons is the ever changing landscapes, from the gorgeous flowering spring bulbs and trees to the final growing season of colored leaves, pumpkins and apples filling the air. Leck's is fairly well hidden off the main roads but they have been in business for seventy years, so all of the locals know right where to go. They have their own greenhouses, it is not a huge garden center, but they do a good business and you can be assured of quality plants. I decided to use them this year for my mums, pansies, kale and cabbage, but while I was there and having a 10% off coupon in tow, I bought several pumpkins, a bale of straw and a couple of corn stalks to decorate the front porch. My flower beds are so pretty once again, until those darn leaves start falling, ugh, don't get me started...

Really healthy plants and what a variety. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly. This is a…read moretreasure of a find. I bought vegetable plants, herbs, flowers, and hanging baskets. I love that it's so close and I loved the color variety. They had my favorite the gerber daisy in all colors. Go Leck's!!!!!

Bridge In Season Corner

I needed mums to replant my gardens and large pots, so I ran down to the corner, Bridge In Season…read moreCorner that is. Better known as Bridge's to the locals, this is a seasonal outdoor nursery which is open Spring throughout the Fall. I have numerous nurseries in my area and feel compelled to divide my business between them, since they are all family owned and they all offer a nice selection of quality grown plants, shrubs and trees, plus very friendly service. Some offer more in the way of ornamental plants, larger hanging baskets and lawn decorations. Bridge's also supports the local farmers by selling their corn and some other produce for them. We have a squirrel feeder and we try to keep it full at all times so they leave the birds food alone. At the end of the Fall season they allow hubby to come down and pick all the leftover corn from the unsold stalks. I have been slowly cleaning out my flower beds and I love to plant mums here and there for the season. This is the second generation of running this business and they have grown to provide more and more services. They now deliver truckloads of varied mulch or stone at a reasonable price. I like to buy my mums here because they are field grown, they often will come back the next year because they have good strong roots, plus I am then supporting the farmer's and Bridge's. I decorate everything all year long and if you stand still long enough, I will decorate you too, just ask hubby.

Russell Gardens Center

Russell Gardens Center in Churchville, Bucks County, Pa., may not be the largest nursery garden…read moreplantation in the region, but in my estimation it is one of the best. I have been shopping here since moving to Bucks and starting a garden around the house (The enterprise is never done). Originally, I was tipped off to its existence by a nurseryman friend who helped me with design and bare root tree planting. He swore by Russell's for perennials and colorful annuals and shrubs that most other dealers either lacked, or only possessed in inferior quality. As an example, twenty years ago I bought a small pot of Coreopsis, a hardy fern-like leafy base with yellow star flowers that bloom in late June/early July, and spread to fill any space they are in. Yesterday, I returned to see what was new in this native American beauty. Now, they are available in a few shades of red/orange, and most strikingly, in a red/yellow flower that is breathtaking in its simplicity and kinship to its elder cousin. Love at first sight. It is now planted across the walkway from the original, and it is easy to imagine its growth over the coming years. We purchased 3 other low growing, shade loving varieties to replace the old builder's grade junipers that had run their course. Three Heuchera with rich dark maroon/gray foliage, two Veronica (Speedwell) that push up spikes of pale blue to indigo flowers in early June, and three low dark green/purple grasses that spread through their roots to cover bare soil and need little maintenance. They are all happily in place beneath the living room window. Always more work to do. Plans call for a redo of the west side foundation plantings. Russell Gardens will get the call as we lay out our plans. Their inventory, knowledge and understanding of gardens and gardeners, makes it the place I trust most with suggestions and products. Prices are about the same as the other shops. Russell Gardens is why we dig in the earth.

The owners are delightful! They have so much knowledge and are willing to share it, even though I…read morealways sound like an idiot!
