We highly recommend Jon Kontz of Plant Design. Five stars out of five. We had major work performed on our pool area and deck and Jon was absolutely great from beginning to end. His recommendations for all aspects of the work were top notch and he was deliberate, patient and easy to talk to before, during and after our project completion. We were looking to re do our pool area and decking because the concrete deck around the pool was showing age, cracking and sagging in spots and the wood deck I had built around the pool concrete over 25 years ago was moving a bit. We had three different contractors provide specs and estimates. Two were stone guys who would replace the existing concrete and wood decking with stone. One of these contractors had done work for us before. I contacted Jon who explained the difference between doing the work with composite decking and stone. We also learned from a survey I commissioned that we would have issues with permeability if we went with stone. Ultimately Jon recommended we go with the Timbertek product for the decking which would replace all the existing concrete and wood. One of the reasons we chose Jon was that he served as our GC/construction manager for the work. We had numerous trades on the job including carpenters, electricians, pool people, demo teams, landscapers, stone masons, to name a few, and I did not want to be responsible for managing all of them plus overseeing the critical path. Jon served in that role wonderfully. Another really great thing that Jon did was recommend that we do the work in Fall '15. We originally wanted to have the work done in Spring '16 as our daughter was getting married Nov '15 and we, and my wife in particular, were a bit manic about having the work going on during the same time as the wedding preparations. We are both so happy that we had the work performed in the Fall '15. As I write this we are now enjoying our beautiful backyard. This was a major project and big $investment for us. I can relate one other specific instance of why Jon was the right guy for us. Early in the project, during the demolition and removal of the pool concrete my wife Nancy was freaking out. I called Jon who came over immediately and explained to us both that this is always how it is at the beginning of these type of jobs and that this was the worst part and all would be well. We were both relaxed because of Jon. Lastly, it has been ~7 months since completion of the work and there are a few minor items that are still being worked out. Jon has been great in communicating and sending his guys over to deal with these few, minor matters. Again, we highly recommend Jon Kontz, Plant Design, for any home project, large or small. Update: Plant Design Group carried through on their promise to refund the $110 for the missing plants and gave me an additional $180 in consideration for doing less than what I expected. I hired Plant Design Group to create a garden area of about 200 square feet and plant 34 plants. The job called for removing sod, tilling, mulching, etc. First, they laid out the design and started to remove sod before I gave the OK - consequently there is a part of the lawn where the sod was removed and replaced that has not grown back adequately. More troublesome is the fact that they only created a 160 square foot garden area that contains only 29 plants. When I asked them to finish the job, they only offered to refund me $110 for the missing plants. As for the square footage, they claim their specs only said "up to 200 sq ft' - they claim 160 sq feet satisfies their specs! I expected "up to 200 sq ft" to mean "close to 200". But 160 is 20% less than what I and any reasonable person would expect. read more

I am happy to report that the Plant team graciously came back out to remedy many of our concerns. While we would have preferred attention to detail the first time around, we did appreciate their sincere effort to improve the project. Additionally, we received word that they intend on revisiting our property over the coming months to ensure positive results remain consistent. Although we're not thrilled with our experience, we are much happier now and do appreciate their professionalism and effort. ------------------------------ We had high hopes for our front and backyard landscaping project, but ultimately were disappointed with the final result. Plant had fantastic reviews everywhere we searched. Despite their higher initial quote we decided to select them given their professionalism and the thoroughness with which they presented the planned overhaul. We found them responsive throughout our interactions leading up to and throughout the project, but we felt as though our desires were only selectively heard and that there was very little attention to detail in completing the work. Our two main priorities were an improved outdoor drainage solution and the clearing out of the extensive brush on our property. That led to a much longer conversation, and thus a higher quote, that included our top priorities as well as substantial improvement in the aesthetics of the entire outdoor space ie. newly mulched beds with an array of bushes and flowers and power-washing/re-grouting outdoor patio. Weather interrupted the project and in the end the result appeared rushed. With that said, we were happy with the brush clearing and the thoroughness of that portion of the project. They removed many bushes/small trees in helping us to better optimize our property. One issue we ran into was neglect for the main area where we were having drainage issues that really prompted us to seek the work in the first place. They improved drainage of several areas on the property but seemed to overlook the gradient issue at the core of the problem. To their credit, they apologized and did their best to remedy the specific area; although their solution seemed to be a simpler solution than what they originally said they would implement prior to the project beginning. Time will tell if the solution in fact works effectively. We also noticed that there was very little attention given to what types of plants we did and didn't want to be included. We stated a desire for color in some of the beds with interest in hydrangeas. We never received hydrangeas, despite a few reminders. In being respectful of our budget they did repurpose some of our existing plants, but curiously replanted what appear to be large dead plants near the entrance to our driveway. This, along with the many weeds that immediately grew in every flower bed within the first week of them leaving, certainly don't help curb appeal. We realized that we would have to maintain the beds, but didn't expect several plants to be dead and the property to be overrun by weeds within two weeks of spending $13k. Lastly, the cleanup was lazy. There are still several large plastic pipes that were ripped up from former drainage, as well as metal wire garden fence, sitting in our yard. Even though they had a power washer on site for our patio they neglected to clean the driveway, which was stained for weeks from the mulch. We were excited to have our property look beautiful and clean, but have unfortunately found that to not quite be the case. As they were finishing up the project we assumed that the lawn would be cut, weeded, and seeded but were told that we would need to speak separately with a lawn company to improve the health of the lawn. They did, however, seed several of the areas in which some of the clearing took place, but have not added seed in the weeks after when checking in on the sprinklers we are renting from them. read more

We recently hired Plant Design Group to do landscaping on the front beds of our house. Let me start by saying that we are so very happy with the results and had the best experience working with Jon and Andrew. They created an absolutely beautiful design for the front of our house and worked with us to keep the design within our budget. Both Jon and Andrew are extremely knowledgeable and creative. We have a lot of shade in the front of our house and many plants, bushes and trees that we planted just did not do well in the shade.
