We were fortunate to have gotten an upgrade which included a small refrigerator which was great for the multi day stay. We hung out in lobby and enjoyed the nightly live music. Staff was great, both at desk, in adobe bar and housekeeping/maintenance. Only bummer was that Doc Martin, the onsite restaurant was only open days we already had plans. Note for weekday stays, check that restaurants are actually open before heading out on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, even if recommended by front desk.

Let's take the tour. The carpet was dirty and buckled, rising up toward the bathroom threshold like it was personally trying to trip me. Nothing says "vacation" like a rug plotting your death. The air conditioning was a window unit roughly the size of a lunchbox and twice as loud, valiantly cooling approximately one square foot of the room while I sweated through the historic sheets. It sounded like a small aircraft trying and failing to take off. All night. The bed deserves its own paragraph. It was old, lumpy, and screamed like a haunted door hinge every single time I so much as breathed. I've slept on futons with more dignity and less commentary. But the crown jewel, the pièce de résistance , is the bathroom doorway, which stands a proud six feet tall. I am 6'3". There was no warning. No little sign, no cheerful "mind your head," nothing. I knocked the absolute daylights out of my skull walking into my own bathroom. In my $250 room. At night. In a place I paid to be. I'm not disappointed. Disappointed is what you feel about a mediocre breakfast. I am angry. I know Taos isn't cheap. I get it. But I paid the exact same amount at La Fonda the night before and it was genuinely lovely - clean, comfortable, and notably free of surprise architectural head trauma. Historic Taos Inn, you owe me an ice pack and an apology. Duck when you enter. Bring earplugs. Bring a helmet. Maybe just stay somewhere else.

During our stay, the hotel was nearly empty, which made the long second-floor hallway, old doors, creaking floors, and deep silence feel especially dramatic. At one point, I caught the unmistakable scent of rose perfume in the hallway. It appeared for only a second and then vanished completely. The hotel has long been associated with stories of unexplained rose fragrance, and experiencing it firsthand was unforgettable. Later that evening, four frightened college students asked us to investigate noises and a shadow they believed they had seen in their room. We found nothing supernatural, but they were frightened enough to leave the hotel in the middle of the night. Our own qualifications as paranormal investigators were somewhat compromised by martinis. I also searched unsuccessfully for a rumored trap door beneath the carpet and managed a brief look into the hotel's supposedly forbidden room. No ghosts appeared, but I did emerge from the carpet covered in decades of dust. The entire experience was funny, eerie, memorable, and completely unique to the St. James, and I have returned several times. What stays with me most is the feeling of the place. Some hotels provide lodging. The St. James gives you a story.

Food was pretty good. Had a salad and added a chili relleno for $5. It was very well prepared, although the salad of mostly spring mix, a few cucumbers and tomatoes was not worth $14. Partner had a steak--said it was ok. "Seasonal vegetables" were just plain kernal corn. Giving this place three stars for food, but the historic charm is the real reason to give it a try. The restaurant was only open Thursday through Saturday in February, so check hours if you want to eat. You can also just stop by and take a look in the lobby and parts of the hotel. The staff doesn't mind.

I have been up since 2:00am, and found it odd that she does not know how to contact the General Manager, Kim Craig. The property is very nice otherwise, but it is not acceptable to be expected to pay $262.59 for a bug-infested room. Fortunately, the management agreed and refunded the entire amount.

This is a great RV park for the area. I did not use the cabins or the lodge so can't speak to…read morethose. The RV area isn't fancy. It's a large gravel area with full service hookups. It's level. The back in spots along the river offer a fire pit, a charcoal grill, and shade. They are quiet except for the sound of the river running through, and while close to each other, are situated so your rig is between you and your neighbor for privacy. The gentleman who runs the place, Paulie, is fantastic and wants to make sure all his guests are comfortable and happy. The bathhouse is probably one of the absolute cleanest and nicest I've seen for an RV park. Laundry is $2 a load to wash and $2 to dry. I enjoyed my stay here much better than the place I stayed in Taos and honestly would rather stay here and drive down to Taos than go back there.
