stay away from this place!! I rescued 2 Dachshund puppies from them in 2013 and 2015 and they were both small and underweight and had behavioral issues. They advertise themselves as a breeder, but they are nothing more than a puppy mill. Carolyn, the lady who started this business, passed away about 10 years ago, and her father took over the business and it was still a horrible place!! Someone now whom I do not know has taken over the business and is still breeding and selling puppies on Facebook. They are NOT AKC certified and they are just nothing but a puppy mill. They need to be reported and shut down and out of business.....permanently. House was incredibly dirty, had a very strong urine order and crates with pregnant mommas and mommas with newborn puppies were literally stacked on top of each other. The dog didn't arrive with shot record. After a week and many text messages and phone calls Sandra sent something that didn't seem accurate. The dog was 3 months old when we bought her but Sandra confirmed it had not had its 6wk or 8wk shots. The site says "age appropriate shots". Not a happy camper. read more

If I could give it zero stars, I would! This breeder has 80+ dogs who are receiving minimal care. She has a blind double dapple because she bred dapple to dapple. We all make mistakes, so normally I could overlook this; however, she is breeding this poor blind dog. She told us "she's one of my best moms!" Obviously, she didn't see an issue with breeding a genetically defected dog, who I'm sure would make a wonderful pet, but shouldn't be used for breeding purposes. I went for one particular puppy I saw on her website. She tried to sell me the wrong dog! When I pointed out it was a different color and marked differently, she simply said that must have changed as he grew. I'm pretty sure that's not how it works. I then asked why the puppy was constantly trembling; she told me that's just what dachshunds do. Ummm no. I have owned multiple dachshunds; none of who shook uncontrollably. I then learned he had been kept inside in a kennel for the first six months of his life. When she sensed I was hesitant, she briefly left, and returned with another puppy. She said, "if you don't want him, I could sell you this little girl. She's not quite ready, but I'd let you have her". What kind of breeder sends her puppies out before they are ready?!?!? There are no puppy mill laws in Kentucky and the AKC didn't seem to care, despite the fact that the breeder claims to be 100% AKC compliant. Writing a review is my only outlet for what was an incredibly disturbing experience. Hopefully this review will keep someone from witnessing this incredibly disturbing outfit. read more

I should have followed my instincts and searched for another breeder, but I thought better of it and here we are. I love my dog, but she's an absolute mess health wise. At just three years old she's had multiple back surgeries for slipped disks and has been diagnosed with a severe and genetic form of epilepsy. This despite having the best vitals and blood work that the local animal hospital had ever seen (so not a diet or excercize problem). She was advertised as a dapple x piebald mix (which I later learned was an no-no for any legitimate breeder) but as she has grown it has become harder to ignore the fact that she looks nothing like any of the other such mixes that I've ever seen, instead looking just like a double dapple (very similar, but different enough to be recognizable). I recommend that you look this up if you're not horrified by the mere mention of the possibility. The individuals who run this organization were extremely businesslike in their demeanor, which is great in a retail shop but terrifying in an animal breeder. The only thing that we ever discussed was price. No discussion about how to adjust my dog to her new pack. No instructions on how to pick her up properly. It's a good thing I had previous experience with dachshunds or I might have seriously hurt her by accident (there was no discussion of previous animal ownership, so the omission was not for this reason). No request for references from a vet or someone who could vouch for my love of animals. No communication since then, even in the beginning when I was sending pretty pictures and good news. The only thing they wanted to discuss was personal checks v. money orders (surprise! they prefer cash). Read their health guarantee: it specifically states that you have 24 hours to have a vet find and certify any LETHAL defects in your new puppy, after which point it's not their responsibility. All of the blood work isn't even going to be done in that time! I originally paid $450 for my pet, but medical bills since that time have added up to well over $8,000, plus time off work for vet appointments and almost a year (cumulative) sitting home nights and weekends because my dog is recovering from surgery and can't walk or go to the bathroom without support. read more

I'm not sure I understand everyone's complaints. I researched numerous of places to buy our fur baby and honestly I was looking as close to my home town as possible. This was still a good distance but I decided to go with it. Sandy could not have been any nicer to us when we went to pick out our puppy. She adapted immediately to our home and it was like she had been a member of our family for years. Yes they do have a lot of dogs and puppies and I'm sure people will have complaints because its normal, but not me. I requested photos of my baby through the weaning process and she came through with photos every time. If you have ever owned dachshunds in the past you should understand they are very prone to back injuries and kidney problems. I highly suggest when you purchase your baby regardless where, to get an appointment with your vet to get a complete examination and if any issues they are found at that time. Their contract states that if anyone has issues due to genetics or issues out of the owners control they will replace your puppy. People need to understand when you are in a business you can never make everyone happy and you will have issues that even breeders are not aware of. I hate to see puppy mills myself and some are worse than others but the outcome is giving these babies a loving home to remove them out of these situations. My last dachshund was from a "puppy mill" and he had a lot of health issues but no fault of the breeder. These dogs don't have the best reputation of being totally 100% healthy. I suggest for those of you that are unhappy maybe you should not be a dog owner. I would buy another dachshund in a heart beat from Ponderosa. read more

Do not buy any dogs from this puppy mill! Carolyn Maggard claims to sell AKC registered miniature dachshunds. However AKC cannot even find my puppy or the dam and sire in AKC's system. I paid for papers on a dog that wasn't even registered, and is a total scam. This is not how to do business and I strongly suggest no one ever buy a dog from Ponderosa Pups.
