They have put on a really wide selection of shows over the years, from Shakespeare to modern comedy and musicals, and they are always involving and entertaining. One of my favourites was their version of A Christmas Carol which was simply magical and so popular it was brought back for a second year! The theatre itself is quite small, only seating about 500 people, and the seats are tiered steeply so that wherever you sit you have a clear view of the stage. Unfortunately the Playhouse is closed again at the moment due to lack of funding. I am among the many who hope that they can sort out their financial problems and re-open very soon, as I have really missed going to see their wonderful productions.

When in visited in 2014 they were doing a modernized version of The Odyssey, updated by the Olivier Award-winning playwright Mike Kenny. The performance involved on-stage storytelling and live music, mostly. The stage itself is modestly sized, as is the auditorium. If you are up for a more conventional theatrical "experience", look elsewhere. As far as experimental theatre and off-off.. stuff is concerned, this theatre might provide an intriguing diversion in what is otherwise not the most exciting city in terms of culture. Excellent modern concert-hall on South Sherwood Street, not to be confused with the "Theatre Royal…read moreand Concert Hall." There's a possible confusion for visitors to Nottingham who are going to attend a concert at the Royal Concert Hall - because when you look it up here or on tripadvisor, mostly you will be directed towards the Theatre Royal and Concert Hall, which is a historic theatre located just around the corner (namely, Theatre Square, Nottingham NG1 6LG). The one I'm talking about is the South Sherwood Street venue, which is a 1982 structure and used for classical concerts as well as any other kind of show (like e.g. the stand-up comedian Omid Djalili, who was one a day after the concert that I attended). The Royal Concert Hall boasts excellent acoustics - much better than e.g. those of the Liverpool Philharmonic hall - though not quite up to the fabulous standards of The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. But it's a better-sounding venue than ANY that you could find in the nation's capital! The sound in the classical concert that I attended (Grieg, Tchaikovsky and Nielsen) was superbly detailed and transparent even in row 4 (stalls). Too bad a city the size of Nottingham doesn't have its own standing professional orchestra. The amenities (bars, toilets, cloakroom) aren't all that great, but the hall itself is. You can always pop in for a pint during intermission at a good pub just across the street (Langtrys).

The acoustics of the hall are incredible. The best way to hear a performance in that place in my opinion is to have no amplification whatsoever. Acoustic concerts are just beautiful there - unfortunately, this can result in the opposite when too much mikeing up is used. I went to see a Rhythm and blues band and the sound was overpowering and swam around the room without clarity. So, pick your show carefully - the programme is always varied and interesting. There's plenty of stuff to see, and at reasonable prices. The seats are comfy, bars convenient and toilets accessible.
