The Derby Playhouse is a lovely little repertory theatre, with a great reputation for their…read moreoriginal theatre productions. They have put on a really wide selection of shows over the years, from Shakespeare to modern comedy and musicals, and they are always involving and entertaining. One of my favourites was their version of A Christmas Carol which was simply magical and so popular it was brought back for a second year! The theatre itself is quite small, only seating about 500 people, and the seats are tiered steeply so that wherever you sit you have a clear view of the stage. Unfortunately the Playhouse is closed again at the moment due to lack of funding. I am among the many who hope that they can sort out their financial problems and re-open very soon, as I have really missed going to see their wonderful productions.

However the new head Jo Ward totally turned the school around. By the time my daughter started there they were on the up. Going into school now is a delight. They have a great ethos and a good learning environment. The atmosphere is always positive and I think the up-turn in results reflect that. They have become well-known in the last 5 years for the fantastic Steel band which spends a lot of time out and about in the community playing gigs for organisations and other schools. This last year they put on their first school production for 16 years which was their own interpretation of Grease and was fabulous. They have a great performing arts department which means the next few years could be very exciting They are hoping to change status to a foundation school in the next couple of years too which will send them from strength to strength. Saw a production of The Merry Wives of Windsor at St Benedict school, put on by Big Adventures in…read moreOctober and it was fantastic. Although the Shakespeare script was followed to the letter, it was set during '30's wartime Windsor and it worked really well. The cast was fantastic, especially the guy who played John Falstaff. The actual venue was small, but very well laid out and I had no problems seeing the stage. Booking was easy, as I called the box-office in advance and the tickets were there for collection. It has a small bar area which sells a range of alcoholic and soft drinks, as well as various snacks. Can't wait for their next production.

The performance involved on-stage storytelling and live music, mostly. The stage itself is modestly sized, as is the auditorium. If you are up for a more conventional theatrical "experience", look elsewhere. As far as experimental theatre and off-off.. stuff is concerned, this theatre might provide an intriguing diversion in what is otherwise not the most exciting city in terms of culture. The staff have always been friendly and helpful enough, the toilets have always been clean. All round I have to say for someone who enjoys going to the cinema and has been to many different cinemas that this is a very enjoyable film goers experience
