    Quad - Cinema

Ok. For those that don't know, Quad is the big strange looking building opposite the assembly rooms…read moreand the council house in Derby Market Place. The design caused a lot of anger amongst many people in the city but largely these moaners were people who would have preferred we stuck with horse & carts and think energy saving lightbulbs are the work of Satans minions. The facilities are fantastic; two cinemas, a smaller box room for events, meeting rooms, Coors Cafe bar, a gallery, the BFI Mediatheque and probably some other stuff that I am not aware of. The Cinemas: Great film listings. If you like cinema that isn't all hollywood blockbusters with predictable stories then this is the cinema for you in Derby, especially given the reasonable price of the tickets. They have cine kids screenings, afternoon matinees which are reduced price tickets and they do their own version of Orange Wednesdays 2-4-1 tickets but this is exclusive to EVERYONE on all screenings after 5pm. Good stuff! BFI mediatheque: The only facility of it's kind outside of London. You have access to a huge archive of film from the British Film Institute and it's completely free. Book yourself in and log on. Brilliant addition which I personally would like to make time to use more often. Gallery: It's a gallery. The exhibitions change and some people like the work and others don't. That's art for you. The Coors Cafe: Ok, This should be brilliant. It's reasonably priced, they do Bass beer on draught and they sometimes have live performances. Sounds good. Well, yes, sort of. Since it opened I have repeatedly visited the cafe and on several visits I have had really bad service, from getting my food orders wrong and being charged incorrectly, to finding chunks (this isn't an exaggeration) of plastic in my food. I really want to like the Coors Cafe but each time I visit it seems like something else goes wrong. I thoroughly recommend visiting Quad though. It's a great place to spend a few hours when you have nothing to do- just be prepared for less that perfect service in the cafe.

QUAD is an excellent addition to Derby's cultural life. The cinemas are spacious and the seats are…read morevery comfortable with plenty of leg room. Tickets are reasonably priced - I usually go for the combined food and film ticket. The cafe offers a good selection of drinks and food, although I find the drinks rather expensive compared to other venues in the area. The Film and Video Archive facilities are a welcome attraction and are easy to use. If you are interested in learning about digital media and how to make the most of Adobe software, QUAD also runs various courses, which appear to be good value. They have a suite of up-to-date Apple Macs with all the bells and whistles. Free wi-fi access is available in the cafe, but you will need to ask for the access code from the reception desk. Well worth a visit.

Both Mrs G and I love this place. Each theater is small (even the big one only seats maybe 100 -…read morebut I haven't counted). Add to that the fact that you can book your seats a week or two ahead and so you always get a great seat!! They get all the big movies fresh - often beating the bigger Odeon theaters (like the one closer to us than Red Carpet. First thing that you see as you drive in towards the Red Carpet is the marina with dozens of canal boats that can be rented. On a nice sunny day - arrive early and stroll around enjoying the beauty, a little shopping perhaps? There is also a ice cream shop and two decent restaurants Talking of restaurants the Red Carpet has its own restaurant - I have posted a typical menu - there you can reserve a table for dinner before the show. And yes it has a full bar All in all - and absolute must visit (often). Recently we enjoyed Rocket Man here - twice! And in a week or so The Irishman is coming here (again before the Odeon I believe. They show a mixture of current, classic and independent films plus some musical theatre, opera and ballet. Really comfortable seats with plenty of leg room. Pricing is very reasonable with a pre noon price of £4.50 per adult. Only criticism of the cinema itself is the volume of the films could be slightly louder but maybe that's because the last film I saw was The Jungle Book and there was 2 unruly children in the next row! Cafe bar is nice, service is quite slow though and food average, I have only eaten here once but wouldn't rush back. I tend to order a glass of wine and take it into the cinema with me! Bliss!

The large car park requires you to take a ticket and then pay as you leave at the pay booths; the price skyrocketing to £5 after two hours! However, the cinema gives you a ticket that gives you four free hours or if you go in the evening, the car park is free. The cinema itself has an impressive glass fronted opening into a foyer area, with a wall a televisions showing film previews and music videos. There is also an entertainment area and machine where you can pay for and collect your prepaid cinema tickets. This cinema is always busy, especially at night and absolutely packed on 'Orange Wednesdays'! Prices are a little on the expensive side, but the screens themselves are air conditioned, spacious and have very comfortable seats. The Deluxe cinema with slightly more expensive tickets even has a small bar! As usual as in any cinema, the refreshments - popcorn, hot dogs, soft drinks etc. are ridiculously expensive, the advantage of a captive audience! Overall great for watching the local blockbusters, but a little on the pricey side

The car park is big (attached to 2 big stores also) and there is always somewhere to park. There's an arcade inside if you show up early to ensure you get tickets or if you want to hang around with your friends after. Also the staff will be there to help you out if there is somebody in there ruining the film. Once there were some kids throwing things around so we went to get a member of staff who stood in the room watching the kids so they wouldn't do it again. It is very well air conditioned though so make sure you take a jacket!
