The Apple Tree - Baked potato - with "home made" chilli

Located in Barton Marina on the waters edge and so a beautiful location on a warm and sunny…read moreSaturday. We had planned to eat outdoors but it was a little breezy and an empty table at the Apple Tree offered some shelter and so we grabbed the table. This is where things went wrong. The staff was not at all friendly when Mrs G went in to order (I was sitting outside with our beautiful Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix Ricky Martin) and the staff was not trained. After the order was placed they can out to ask which baked potato we had ordered (really - I told you!). When it came out it was ok - but £8 for a baked potato - huh!? And then the brought out the wrong panini (she specified NO cheese because she has to avoid salt). So Mrs G essentially left hers uneaten and I ate mine but was still starving. That delight with 2 sodas - over £24! Will we be back? To the marina yes, to the Apple Tree - no thank you!

Been to Barton Marina a few times. It's just as you get off the A38 and head toward Barton Marina…read more There are a number of shops, a pub, Thai restaurant and a cinema. As it was raining this afternoon we decided to grab a drink & came at The Appletree. A cafe in a beautiful setting next to the Marina with a high ceiling, fancy lights, mirrors and a baby grand piano. I had a glance at the cake counter there was a good selection of cakes but I decided to go for a cream tea. My partner wanted the same but with coffee. I had to pay extra for coffee but not much. We waited a little while for the drinks etc to come. The only thing that spoiler the tranquil setting was a child screaming which was amplified by the vaulted ceiling. My cream tea arrived, a large pot of tea with a fruit scone accompanied by jam & clotted cream. It was all lovely. Our visit was only marred by the noise of the child but that happens everywhere we go and the toilet being out of order and the nearest public toilet being at the top of the Marina. Glad the large pot of tea didn't take effect.

As you enter the café appears to be very small, but it is actually split up into many different small rooms, all adorned with an eclectic mix of ornaments, books, old wooden tennis racquets etc. It really does have a unique and relaxed feel to it. There are tables suitable for large groups or smaller parties; we prefer the round tables, as they make it easier to socialise in a group. Everything is made to order at Skinny Kitten, so relax because the food and drink are worth the weight. The staff are very enthusiastic, and are keen to ensure that whatever you order is just right for you, often giving you a multitude of options for breads, fillings etc. The menu is comprehensive, with a great variety of breakfast and lunchtime dishes. We've only ever been for lunch, but sampling the breakfast menu is good excuse for going back. We opted to share a CBLT, chicken, bacon, lettuce and tomato, which came warm with freshly cooked bacon, and a dressed salad. Rarely I have tasted such a fresh and flavoursome sandwich, a real triumph, more than enough for two. The americano and cappuccino packed a real caffeine hit too, but mellow and not bitter to the taste, and the accompanying homemade carrot cake, was generous and tasty, if a little sweet. We will return, very soon!

Cafe Zen is a very friendly cafe the prices are reasonable and the food is always very hot Cafe…read moreZen is run by a local business man who has taught his staff to be extremely polite and presentable the tables are cleaned within seconds of a table being vacated so you don't have to sit at a table waiting for it to be cleared of dirty cups/plates. Cafe Zen is situated across from Burton College (And almost on top of Burton market), so you do get quite a few college students in for lunch, which Cafe Zen encourages as they are a community cafe. This is not to say students are the only clientèle as the customers range from the very young to pensioners who are all made to feel very welcome. My husband and I go to Zen's Saturday and Sunday for our breakfast and we are never rushed, we take our papers and take our time on the note of papers Zen offers daily papers to read on the premises every day. Zen's menu is quite varied ie: all day breakfast sandwiches panini's - wraps pizzas burgers jacket potatoes etc all cooked/made fresh. Cafe Zen has tables outside for those who wish to eat alfresco or dare I say have a ciggie with your coffee! I can't rate this place enough for its friendliness and good budget but fresh food the only down side of this establishment would be their toilets they aren't the best in town however they do seem to be trying to rectify this but if you find they aren't up to standard I can thoroughly recommend the market toilets yes the market toilets worth a visit even if you don't want to go! Oh nearly forgot to mention the upstairs rather remarkable. And one last thing as Cafe Zen is a Muslim run cafe they do not serve bacon. May I just add I have marked down Zen because of their toilets but maybe I am picky food wise for the type of venue is definitely a 5*
