The Polly Woodside is the main attraction of Melbourne's maritime museum. It stands as a relic from an era where travelling on the ocean was king, and both trade and passenger ships would brave the wild seas on purposeful voyages - as opposed to todays luxury liners that are known for their onboard waterslides.
Built in Belfast, Ireland in the late 19th century, the Polly Woodside was used as a cargo ship predominantly travelling between England and South America, though it has travelled the world in its years.
Today the Maritime Museum has restored the ship to its former glory, and allow visitors to step on board and experience what life may have been like for a sailor back then. Hourly tours are run by 'First Mates', and are both fun and informative. They also offer great activities for children, and hold pirate days once a month or so to the delight of any kid who has donned an eye patch in their life.
There's lots of interesting information available for those interested in the maritime way of life, or just want to see a renowned Melbourne attraction. read more
