One of the stones got loose and I took it there to have it fixed last week. They not only offered to replace it , but also to size it so it fits better and post it once it's finished. They sent it off to be resized and when the ring came back there was a small scratch across 2 facets of the diamond. The proprietor refused to take any responsibility for this, even though one of his staff members had already told us it had probably happened when it was being resized. He advised he would polish the scratch out. In the mean time I had been independently advised by a diamond expert of Bentley and Skinners Fine Antique Jewellers of Mayfair, London that by polishing the scratch out we would lose to much of the stone and therefore devalue the ring. The proprietor refused to accept this and offered no apology or any kind of compensation to us. He claimed that the scratch did not affect the value of the ring! I might not be an expert in diamonds but I'm certainly not stupid. Though he has some beautiful antiques I would not advise anyone to do business with this person.

They sell very fine antique opals as well as man made ones. I highly recommend this lovely little shop for a little browse if you are in the area. It is a shop/gallery which sells the work of the Sussex guild, a group of designers artists and craftspeople, whose members live and work in Sussex and the surrounding area. The various artists' and designers' work for sale includes pottery, jewellery, furniture and art. It ranges in price and style, from homey crockery painted with cartoon-y chickens, to elegantly painted silk clothing, to wooden furniture for upwards of two grand a piece. The guild also runs classes, such as how to make fused glass jewellery, or turn wooden bowls, or do quilting. To inquire about courses you can telephone or visit the shop.

The fact that it has a lot of stuff is quite good, however it is generally a bit more pricey than other charity shops. Tops come in at around £6.50, which I'd say is about 30% more than standard charity shop prices. Plus, I pulled out a shirt that I quite like the look of, to find that it was stained all down the front and still cost £6.50. What's more, there were a couple of dresses in there going for £25. In my opinion that is too much, even if they are quite nice.

Lounge was the last shop I entered in to, probably the first one that wasn't a chain store or a charity shop. Unfortunately though, the clothes weren't really right for what I wanted. The products were fashionable enough, offering formal and evening wear, all for women. Price wise, it was also a little bit steep. This isn't greatly surprising in a place like Lewes, but I just wasn't bowled over by the selection, especially not at the prices, and especially when Brighton is so close.

Lounge is expensive too. I have to admit, I do get most of my items from the sale rail, but it still tends to be over and above your usual high street branch. However, I also think that the quality is above and beyond. For a start, they tend to go with a few designers that they have individually sourced so you are always going to find something a little different. Often, they only buy in one item of each size and pattern, so you can be pretty sure you are not going to bump in to someone wearing the same dress! Everything is well made and the cut is usually flattering and fits well. The girls in the shop (the owner and the staff) are all really helpful, offering advise and suggestions of what goes with what. They are friendly and happy to chat even if you are just browsing. Lewes is full of independent boutiques but Lounge is definitely one of the best.
