Typically, I enjoy going to the dentist, but I've also never really needed anything but check-ups and cleanings so I suppose I've had it easy. I got a Groupon for a cheap cleaning, exam, and x-rays at another office so I went for it. I feel like I take good care of my teeth and haven't had any problems, so I figured $79 was good enough for me. Big mistake! According to the dentist in the 2 minutes he spent with me, I had a tooth with a big cavity (GASP!) and it needed a root canal and crown. I've never had a cavity and now I need a root canal? I asked if that was the only option and he said "absolutely." Then he said to schedule it with the front desk and walked out. I'm not going to spend too much time writing a review about another office, but basically, I felt like I was just a number. And they wouldn't even clean my teeth that day! I figured I needed to find an office that was a more comfortable fit so I put off the treatment and started looking around again. Fortunately, I work with someone who has been going to Dr. Jim Atchison for a long time and loves it. She told me that he's conservative with treatment, is pretty much pain-free, and does great work. It was pretty close to our home, so I called and booked an appointment. I'm SOOOO glad I did! The office is super nice, has relaxing jazz music, and you have the option of watching TV while in the dental chair. Angie was my hygienist and she was a lot of fun to talk to (and of course did a really good cleaning). I briefly met Dr. Jim before my cleaning (he's really nice), but his son Dr. Craig did my exam. I told about my experience with the other office and he asked if the tooth with the cavity had been bothering me (it hadn't). When he looked at the x-rays he agreed that the tooth had a large cavity but preferred to take a conservative approach and see how things went with just a filling first. He did a great job of explaining things to me and wasn't in a rush to get on to the next patient. I was so relieved! Since this was my first filling, I was a little nervous, but Dr. Craig's shot to numb the tooth was completely painless and the rest of the procedure was a breeze. The best part is, the tooth has given me no problems since! If it eventually needs that root canal, I'll understand, but I'm REALLY glad that Dr. Craig started with the conservative option, not just the expensive one. I like the friendly, family atmosphere at the office and have already booked appointments for my husband and daughter. I usually wouldn't write such a long review, but my teeth are important to me and I really appreciated the excellent care I received at this office. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I recently started SureSmile treatment here, and the whole process has been so much easier and smoother than I expected. I first went in for a consult and scans that were sent off to SureSmile, and during that appointment they really took the time to listen to what I specifically wanted to improve. Then I went back in to review the 3D model and treatment plan, which was actually really cool to see. That appointment felt very conversational and relaxed, and they were happy to answer all of my questions and concerns without making me feel rushed or pressured! About two weeks later all of my trays came in, and honestly I started noticing improvements after just a few trays. The pain/discomfort has been very minimal, and my teeth are already looking so much better. I asked them if they took my insurance and they said yes. But what I should have asked was if they were in network. I was in pain and needed help immediately so I didn't ask that very important question. I did ask how much it would cost me and they looked up my insurance and gave me a breakdown of what I would pay and what my insurance would cover. They were completely wrong by over $400. It cost me out of my own pocket over $1000 for just a root canal. I didnt even get the crown done yet. When I asked them about it, they told me that there was a disclaimer so I would not only be responsible for the whole portion but it "would be illegal" for them to give me a discount. That is where I call BS. But that is also why they get this review and one star. They were not forthright with they they cost and they cost over double what they should compared to others around them. Don't go here. Wolves in sheep's clothing.

Getting dental work done is never pleasant, but I'd have to say that Dr. Emory and his staff really do a good job of helping you along. I used to have a dentist that seemed to hate his job and his life. This guy really seems to love his job, and as a patient you can tell. Dr. Emory finds a way to tell you what you need to know without lecturing you or giving you a guilt trip. Before, my cleanings would always be a painful and a dreaded experience no matter how well I brushed and flossed (which sometimes was awesome, and other times not so much). However the dental hygienists here are very gentle, friendly, and professional. This clinic has all of the top of the line technology which was a huge improvement over my last dentist's office. That place had a run down decor and equipment that hadn't been updated in decades. All too common. I found this dentist because a friend of mine who went to dental school at UMKC did an internship with Dr. Emory and told me he was the most gifted and honest dentists he had met and my friend still thinks so now that he's been out of dental school for a few years. There are a lot of crooks out there. Dr. Emory is not one of them. One final point. I have been to Smile station now 3 times and my wife has been there at least 4 or 5. Not once have they been late on a scheduled appointment. That means a lot. Conclusion My wife and I live in the city, but we don't mind driving a little ways to get there because it is darn well worth it to go to someone you trust and gives you the best possible care. If you feel like your current dentist isn't the greatest, consider giving the Smile Station a chance. It has shown me that going to the dentist doesn't have to be a situation to dread. I wish I would have known about this place a long time ago.

My first appointment with Des Peres Smiles was phenomenal. I have driven by this office coming home from work and didn't think much of it, but it's actually a great office and very close to my house. The staff were great -- from the receptionist Shannon to the tech Allison and finally, the dentist Dr. Nicole Niewdach. She was knowledgeable and kind, and she along with Allison were very gentle while operating on me. I felt like I was in great hands. The office was very clean as well. Dr. Stanford is always on the cutting edge of the science of new equipment. They have massage chairs and you get to choose your music genre. They have also just added a state-of-the art teeth whitening system, which I experienced yesterday. It was painless and easy, only 25 minutes at a great price. My teeth whitened at least 2 shades, and they send home a whitening pen.

More importantly though, the staff knows what they're doing. My regular dental hygienist is an absolute angel; she lets me know what I'm doing wrong (grinding, not enough flossing, etc etc) without scolding and is so nice that I feel really comfortable conversing even with things totally unrelated to my teeth. Dr. Stanford himself is also very nice and knowledgable. I never feel like they are suggesting procedures that are unnecessary or expensive. Nobody likes going to the dentist, but Stanford makes it much more bearable.

It was surprisingly pain-free, and he was full of great dental info. But the really great part is, they didn't try to rip me off, or suggest any unnecessary procedures. It kind of like taking your car in for an oil change, & they tell you you need all new fluids, tire rotation, air filters, head gasket, etc. So it was really nice that they treated me like a patient, not a customer. When I arrived, I sat for just a few minutes and was greeted by Ari, who was fabulous. She put me at ease right away, because I wasn't sure if I was in the right place for my problem. She assured me I had made the correct call. Ari has a wonderful personality and made me feel comfortable right away. While we were waiting for Dr. Grayem, Sarah popped in to say hello. Sarah took care of me many times in the past year and is a delight. I was very happy to see her. Ari and Sarah were the perfect pair for me to see on Monday. Dr. Grayem came in and was very concerned and tried to help me. When the visit was over Sarah walked me out to the check out and just made me feel so special. What a wonderful experience, when I wasn't feeling well at all! I have never liked going to the dentist, because I have had several terrible experiences.
