Whilst some businesses operate under cutesy, floundering names and others mysterious ones which leave you guessing, Polish Delicatessen is neither of the above. It cuts to the point. Quite simply, it is what it is. - A delicatessen which is Polish. A Polish delicatessen. In this sense, you might be fooled into thinking that what's inside will be basic or simple.
When I visited Poland, I fell in love with the food. Delicious, comforting and homely, I was taken! It really is a wonder that I've not ventured into Polish Delicatessen before but today, for the first time, I did. It's reasonably small with shelf after shelf of Polish produce. As there are quite a lot of Polish businesses and people of Polish descent living in Stirling, a lot of the things on offer are typical brands you'd find in Polish supermarkets but there are also higher quality fresh foods in the back section. Whether you're looking for something quick (they have a large range of soup packets) or just some ingredients for cooking, there's lots on offer. I did notice quite the Polish sausage selection. Mmm!
I was particularly excited about the bread. They didn't have quite as much in today as I expected but as it's a delicatessen, it's a possibility that stock varies. They had some lovely looking pretzels, some smaller rolls and some larger loaves. - I left with a yummy Silesian Bloomer!
Bread under arm, I headed to the fridge and.....OOOOOOH MY GOLLY GOSH, PIEROGIS! If you've tried Pierogis once, you'll know just why I was so excited. Headed for the till, I was met with fast Polish chatter. They think I'm Polish! Not to worry. - When I tell them of my deep love of pierogis since my visit to Poland, (the land of Pierogis, of course!) they're quick to give me a cooking tip. - Cook them with bacon and fried onions. Noted! It's true, nobody does pierogis like the Polish.
Everything on offer was really, very cheap. (If you've been to Poland, you'll know what I mean!) I did notice they had some little vanilla (and other) essences for baking. At 55p, I really don't think you'll find any cheaper that that. My large packet of piergogis and huge loaf came in at just £3.30. Wowzer!
So with my bread and my sauerkraut and mushroom pierogis, I simply had to flee before I spent all my pennies! read more
