Always a great stay at the Green Tortoise. If you're looking for an affordable, cozy, and cool spot…read moreto stay in San Francisco you won't find any better than the Green Tortoise hostel. It has an amazing communal vibe, clean bathrooms, hot showers, and the most chill staff you'll ever meet. Feels like going to stay at your cool uncle or cousin's place. Large industrial kitchen and fridges for guests to use, bagels, coffee, and scramble eggs for breakfast. I come to town almost every year for the Game Developer Conference, and the Green Tortoise is my hidden gem I've found, just a short walk to the convention center and right by China town. I almost didn't want to write this review because I don't want everyone to know about this place, but they deserve it because they are so awesome 10/10 wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else when visiting San Francisco!

I thought the common room was a fantastic way to make friends, especially with $1 beer nights (bad beer, but for $1 cant complain). My only thing is that it claims to be a part hostel but there are literal families with kids here.....super uncomfy......and then the evening events arent that fun. I showed up for the acrobatic show, where it says they get you a deal on $90 tickets for only $20 and then you hage to buy 2 items (so you pay like $40 or $50 total, but I found out you can just buy $20 tickets to the show and not be forced to buy other food items. Just felt kind of scammed. Otherwise, I had a great time, loved that storing luggage was free on checkout day, and I made some great friends!

This is probably my favorite place to stay as it may be somewhat older (classic old school - rooms…read morewith washstand but toilets and shower/bath in the hall) but it right in the middle of Hayes Valley and everything is right there and there are good restaurants, coffee shops, great ice cream places, a nice park to sit by and read and of course a beer garden by the park that opens in the afternoon. You can also easily walk or do mass transit to other places - I did a walk up to the Painted Ladies and then hung out a bit in the lower Haight and then easily walked back down to this area. The establishment also has a kitchen area so you can go pick up sundry and supplies at the local Trader Joe's (just 2 or 3 blocks away) if you want to limit how much you spend eating out (something I plan to do next time) and the kitchen has free tea and instant coffee so the basics if you want to ease into your day. If you want the full "bathroom in my room" sort of thing there are other places but this is my 2nd time here and it is still great - there are stairs and no elevator so keep that in mind but the price versus location is wonderful - if noise bothers you, then bring ear plugs for the weekend - not super loud but if you are not used to noise, it might keep you up a bit - but I've found it to be a super safe area - you can catch the Bart most of the way (to the civic center) and then you catch the 21 3 stops to this location. Do note, you don't have someone on staff there but available by text and you use a key app, that they notify the day you are checking in - which I think works well - it is nice to have an affordable way to get out of the heat in Phoenix, especially in the summer, and I'm not looking for a resort experience but a place to lay my head and keep my stuff while I go enjoy the sights and sounds, and amazing food and drink, of the local area.

I had been staying at Hayes Valley Inn since 2018 after I moved away from SF. It was a cute B&B…read moreoverlooking Gough & Hayes. COVID completely ruined this place and it seems like they're under new management because they have been completely unaccommodating. I booked under non-refundable and needed to change my dates of stay. When I rebooked, they charged me way more than the advertised price when I checked that same hour. When I asked about this price discrepancy, they just replied with "the prices change everyday". It's not even worth staying here anymore. The bathrooms aren't kept up as well, there's no front desk, and no breakfast spread. $535 for 3 nights vs the 410 that it was listed for? They're trying to take advantage of the fact that I booked non-refundable! I've been trying to get in contact with management and all I'm told is that management doesn't work at hours so I'd be unable to call the line. "Email them" is what I was told to do. It seems like they don't email back either. The Inn holds a lot of special memories for me but I will never go back.

SAFETY VIOLATION: DO NOT BOOK - Guest Room Lacks Required Interior Lock…read more Booked Samesun San Francisco for July 19-21, 2026, but discovered a serious safety defect that forced me to cancel and book a different hotel. Critical Issue: The guest room has NO functioning interior lock or deadbolt. While the door locks from outside with a keycard, there is NO way to lock the door from inside. This is a direct violation of California Building Code Section 1004A, which requires all hotel guest rooms to have interior locks for guest privacy and safety. What This Means: - Anyone with a keycard or access code can enter anytime - Staff can enter without permission - Other guests could potentially access your room - Your belongings are not secure - You cannot ensure personal safety or privacy How Samesun Responded: When I reported this immediately upon arrival, the front desk refused to: - Fix the lock - Provide an alternative room with proper locks - Offer any accommodation or refund They claimed all rooms lack interior locks and this is "not a safety concern." This is false. California law is clear: interior locks are mandatory, not optional. Why Solo Travelers Should Know: This is especially dangerous for women traveling alone. You cannot secure your room. This is not a minor inconvenience--it's a serious security risk that violates state law. Airbnb's Response: When I contacted Airbnb support, they initially dismissed this as "not a safety concern." This is legally incorrect. Airbnb has not taken action against this property. Building Code Violation: Samesun San Francisco is operating in violation of mandatory California Building Code Section 1004A. This property should be investigated by the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection. My Recommendation: Do NOT book here, especially if traveling solo as a woman. Do not expect management to take guest safety seriously. The property does not meet California's mandatory safety requirements. I have filed complaints with the California Department of Consumer Affairs and the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection regarding this code violation. unsafe hotel, security risk, building code violation, no door lock, not safe for solo travelers, women's safety, San Francisco hotels
