Very rude and bad attitude....

The Worst Hostel Experience of My Life - Unsafe, Disrespectful & Discriminatory This is by far the worst hostel experience I've ever had - and I've stayed in hostels across the world, from Berlin to Bangkok. If you care about your basic human dignity, emotional safety, or physical well-being, STAY AWAY from this place. Upon arrival, despite having already paid a deposit, I was met with a rude, aggressive, and unstable front desk staff member. He first insisted that payment could only be made via credit card, even though their policy also allows cash. When I calmly offered to pay in cash, he became visibly annoyed and started questioning my decision, complaining loudly and refusing to explain things in a professional manner. When I politely asked for clarification, his tone became hostile, he raised his voice, and within minutes he was shouting at me, saying he would not provide service and demanded I leave. He even threatened to call the police, for absolutely no reason. His behavior was deeply disturbing, bordering on psychotic. I genuinely felt unsafe, especially as a non-white traveler. His actions and attitude were clearly discriminatory, and I suspect racist in nature. I recorded part of the interaction on video and can confirm: this person is not emotionally stable and should not be in a customer-facing role. The hostel itself is riddled with excessive, unnecessary rules, the atmosphere is hostile, and nothing about it feels welcoming or safe. If you value your peace, your safety, and your rights as a guest - do NOT stay here. This place is a walking red flag. There are many other options in San Francisco. Avoid this place at all costs.

I had a really hard time deciding whether to give this place two stars or three... We'll start with the good things about the place: The employees there are very nice. When boyfriend and I got there, the guy at the front desk asked "you didn't park nearby did you?" (the place is NOT in a good part of town). The main entrance locks at a certain time and you need a code to get in the door. There is free wi-fi, and the kitchen area is very roomy. I would like to believe that the sheets and blankets are washed between guests based on the fact that we were asked to strip the sheets and bring them to the front desk when we checked out. The paintjob in the room was nice, it must have been done recently. The shared bathroom was actually pretty nice, though it was kind of gross that it was always steamy from someone else's shower. The bad: this hostel is in a really rough part of town. Human feces on the sidewalk, people smoking meth and shooting up right outside, midday. Our room came with a bed and that's it. Literally nothing but a bed. We didn't trust anything about the room so we slept with all our clothes on, sweatshirt hoods pulled up in hopes that none of our skin would touch any part of the sheets. We think we may have had one of the best views. We could see the the roof of other buildings around us. The window had no screen, the wall socket was pulled halfway out of the wall. The shared bathroom had a slider lock on the door instead of a lock on the doorknob, which is kind of awkward to have someone try to open the door when you're in there. The carpets were filthy. There was a meth pipe on the roof outside our window. For about $50 a night, I guess we should have known what we were getting ourselves into. If you're looking for the cheapest place possible, you can't expect it to be nice. If in the future, the only two options are stay here for $50 or sleep in my car for free, I might choose sleeping in my car. Reminder to self, spend $100 and be okay with it...

DO NOT STAY HERE!!! I would give no stars if I could!! I found a syringe needle next to the bed. I am to say the least not happy. The room smelled weird the shower had almost no water coming out. Then I dropped my phone next tot he bed and I seen the needle on the floor. Also room is supposed to be smoke free but smells like an ashtray

Hard to tell but that is a motherfucking bedbug full of blood and when I tried to pick it up it squirted blood everywhere.

BED BUG!!!!!! Live bed bug in my bed in Room 104 next to the kitchen. The guy Andy refused to give me a refund because he said I could have brought the bed bug on my own bags!!! He said I could get a refund if the exterminator came and verified that there were bedbugs!!!!!! Ewwwwwwwwww this place is gross. My room smells like crotch. There is somebody else's body hair in the bed. The hallway smells like an ashtray because they don't pay to have someone working the front desk after 10:30, so people just hang out with the front door of the hostel open and people smoking cigarettes right there. The bathroom is disgusting, covered in water and hair. Also it's now midnight and they have 3 moving guys going back and forth down the hallway in front of my room moving a refrigerator. Is midnight the appropriate time for that activity???????

This is the worst place that I've ever been to in my life. It was stinky, the staff were super rude, and it was just disgustingly dirty.

It has an amazing communal vibe, clean bathrooms, hot showers, and the most chill staff you'll ever meet. Feels like going to stay at your cool uncle or cousin's place. Large industrial kitchen and fridges for guests to use, bagels, coffee, and scramble eggs for breakfast. I come to town almost every year for the Game Developer Conference, and the Green Tortoise is my hidden gem I've found, just a short walk to the convention center and right by China town. I almost didn't want to write this review because I don't want everyone to know about this place, but they deserve it because they are so awesome 10/10 wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else when visiting San Francisco!

I thought the common room was a fantastic way to make friends, especially with $1 beer nights (bad beer, but for $1 cant complain). My only thing is that it claims to be a part hostel but there are literal families with kids here.....super uncomfy......and then the evening events arent that fun. I showed up for the acrobatic show, where it says they get you a deal on $90 tickets for only $20 and then you hage to buy 2 items (so you pay like $40 or $50 total, but I found out you can just buy $20 tickets to the show and not be forced to buy other food items. Just felt kind of scammed. Otherwise, I had a great time, loved that storing luggage was free on checkout day, and I made some great friends!

You can also easily walk or do mass transit to other places - I did a walk up to the Painted Ladies and then hung out a bit in the lower Haight and then easily walked back down to this area. The establishment also has a kitchen area so you can go pick up sundry and supplies at the local Trader Joe's (just 2 or 3 blocks away) if you want to limit how much you spend eating out (something I plan to do next time) and the kitchen has free tea and instant coffee so the basics if you want to ease into your day. If you want the full "bathroom in my room" sort of thing there are other places but this is my 2nd time here and it is still great - there are stairs and no elevator so keep that in mind but the price versus location is wonderful - if noise bothers you, then bring ear plugs for the weekend - not super loud but if you are not used to noise, it might keep you up a bit - but I've found it to be a super safe area - you can catch the Bart most of the way (to the civic center) and then you catch the 21 3 stops to this location. Do note, you don't have someone on staff there but available by text and you use a key app, that they notify the day you are checking in - which I think works well - it is nice to have an affordable way to get out of the heat in Phoenix, especially in the summer, and I'm not looking for a resort experience but a place to lay my head and keep my stuff while I go enjoy the sights and sounds, and amazing food and drink, of the local area.

COVID completely ruined this place and it seems like they're under new management because they have been completely unaccommodating. I booked under non-refundable and needed to change my dates of stay. When I rebooked, they charged me way more than the advertised price when I checked that same hour. When I asked about this price discrepancy, they just replied with "the prices change everyday". It's not even worth staying here anymore. The bathrooms aren't kept up as well, there's no front desk, and no breakfast spread. $535 for 3 nights vs the 410 that it was listed for? They're trying to take advantage of the fact that I booked non-refundable! I've been trying to get in contact with management and all I'm told is that management doesn't work at hours so I'd be unable to call the line. "Email them" is what I was told to do. It seems like they don't email back either. The Inn holds a lot of special memories for me but I will never go back.

SAFETY VIOLATION: DO NOT BOOK - Guest Room Lacks Required Interior Lock…read more Booked Samesun San Francisco for July 19-21, 2026, but discovered a serious safety defect that forced me to cancel and book a different hotel. Critical Issue: The guest room has NO functioning interior lock or deadbolt. While the door locks from outside with a keycard, there is NO way to lock the door from inside. This is a direct violation of California Building Code Section 1004A, which requires all hotel guest rooms to have interior locks for guest privacy and safety. What This Means: - Anyone with a keycard or access code can enter anytime - Staff can enter without permission - Other guests could potentially access your room - Your belongings are not secure - You cannot ensure personal safety or privacy How Samesun Responded: When I reported this immediately upon arrival, the front desk refused to: - Fix the lock - Provide an alternative room with proper locks - Offer any accommodation or refund They claimed all rooms lack interior locks and this is "not a safety concern." This is false. California law is clear: interior locks are mandatory, not optional. Why Solo Travelers Should Know: This is especially dangerous for women traveling alone. You cannot secure your room. This is not a minor inconvenience--it's a serious security risk that violates state law. Airbnb's Response: When I contacted Airbnb support, they initially dismissed this as "not a safety concern." This is legally incorrect. Airbnb has not taken action against this property. Building Code Violation: Samesun San Francisco is operating in violation of mandatory California Building Code Section 1004A. This property should be investigated by the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection. My Recommendation: Do NOT book here, especially if traveling solo as a woman. Do not expect management to take guest safety seriously. The property does not meet California's mandatory safety requirements. I have filed complaints with the California Department of Consumer Affairs and the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection regarding this code violation. unsafe hotel, security risk, building code violation, no door lock, not safe for solo travelers, women's safety, San Francisco hotels

If you're a low budget traveler, bring your own power bank and don't need to plug in a laptop or work from cafes, then this will work for you. It's about $35 a night here on a weekday. Pros: 1. Great location at Marina District. Walkable to many northern parks and Marina District shopping/dining area. Walkable to many coffee shops and Body Temp Yoga...there were several yoga studios nearby. 2. Clean, cool, fresh vibe. It was spacious and had lots of light. 3. Outdoor garden - to relax, smoke. There is a pond and the sound of running water is so relaxing. Looks like some cruiser bikes were there either for you to borrow...not sure. 4. The common dresser area had alot of amenities such as sunblock, hair spray, aloe if you get sunburned, deodorant, hair gel, lotion, face lotion, etc. 5. Safe - the neighborhood and the tenants/guests seemed nice 6. TV at each pod - don't know if it works, I didn't use 7. Upstairs conference room for working, taking calls, I saw someone gaming in there. Also there is a TV couch lounge to work or take calls. Cons: 1. Can't really work here unless you bring your own power. Most of the POWER OUTLETS and USB OUTLETS DO NOT WORK. I tried all in the common downstairs work area, and plugged into a few empty pods that were not mine. Tried the sofa/tv room upstairs as well. One USB outlet worked in common downstairs area. 2. There are 17 pods (beds) and 2 bathrooms. If you are waking up from 5:45a to 9:30a, you will have to wait. When I stayed, only 10 or 11 pods were occupied, and the bathroom was not accessible. I booked a yoga class nearby at Body Temp Yoga (ashtanga style). It's a 3 minute walk, just use restroom there, or figure something else out. 3. Only 1 shower inside the gender neutral restroom. There were perhaps one person who smelled of BO, like they didn't shower for a long time, and you can smell them 15 feet away. Not the fault of the Sharepod. 4. If you check in after 10p, all the lights are out. If you check in after 11pm, there are additional procedures. Just keep it in mind. 5. Parking - didn't see a parking lot. I took BART and rideshares, so not a problem for me. 6. You're in a big open room with 17 people. I rather have a place like Orange Hostel, where its 4 females to a room and 4 persons share 1 restroom. They wake up at 5:45a. If you're a light sleeper, this will not work for you. I'm a heavy sleeper and I woke up. 7. Last thing, the blanket was so small it covered only half my body. Use your coat to cover the other half. lol. At least they ran the heat in the beginning of the night and the place ran warm (even for me who likes hot yoga). It may get chilly in winter, so bring you wool layers and socks. Will I stay here again? For the location maybe. If I can figure a better power outlet situation to charge laptop and cell phone, and access to restroom. Also, I like being closer and walkable to Financial District and Chinatown.

Nice to know it's a long term stay because I didn't know. The worker/host understood and was able to keep my pod for the entire stay. No problems. It's close to many restaurants and easy to get around. But when I didn't go out for food, it was nice to be able to warm up my leftovers and cook if I wanted to. I for the most part did my own dishes but the staff offered to help. I thought that was cool. The staff was nice and accommodating. Bathrooms were clean. That to me is important. And sleep (because I travel so much) also very important. It was quiet. I was not disturbed. Would definitely recommend and stay again when I'm in the Bay Area.
