Virginia when the winter gets colder to maintain their stock and tomatoes are brought in from Georgia and Florida. I am a firm believer that good food is all about good ingredients and I am constantly underwhelmed by the selection and quality of the produce at my nearby Giant Eagle on whittier street and trendy Kroger's in the Brewery District. This week at Evelyns I got some of the biggest and hardy sweet potatoes for just .79 a pound and equally delicious tomatoes for 1.99 a pound. I also had my eye on the abundant and fresh supply of sweet onions, zuchinni, cabbage, and squash. Again the quality is superior to local grocers and prices are competitive. If you are not familiar with this part of town it can be tricky to find, south on parsons avenue just beyond the old schottensteins. The address is Marion rd but it is not marked, You will see E. Barthman on the west side, and Evelyn's is on the opposite side. Hours are Mon-Saturday 9:00-5:30 from Dec-March and 9:00-5:30 Mon-Sun April-November. I often call ahead to see what they have each week. I am never disappointed!

The meat counter always has fresh meats as well as prepped and marinated foods that can help make the evening dinner at home quicker. The restaurant and creamery is sooooo goooooood!!! The produce was pretty picked over the day I visited, but I did score some beautiful fresh lettuce, jalapenos and Snowville whipping cream. The meat case was well stocked and they had some nice looking cheeses. I could see some tasty charcuterie boards happening after a stop here.

Satellite operations now actually exist in several leather parts of the city, but the concept is the same. On site flat lot parking is available as well as street parking, and parking in a number of garages nearby. This is a great place to come for lunch or dinner, perhaps before an event at one of the several venues in the Arena District entertainment area.

So if you don't mind walking a bit in potentially garbage weather with untended sidewalks, it's super fun to visit. Jeni's is always a treat for dessert, but so is Buckeye Donuts. I emailed the folks at DNO and they told me I could come right over and pick it up. I showed up yesterday and was a little lost, so I called in and and spoke with Sara, the Azoti account manager, and she was so nice in helping me get my produce, even when I came on the wrong day(they are open on Saturdays for pick-up...I came on Thursday...again, ditz). I just loved the customer service I received and how friendly and accommodating they were for me. I've worked in customer service in some form or another since I was 16 years old and I appreciate good customer service when I receive it. I would recommend this CSA program to anyone I work with and any of my friends. Thanks again!

This market runs the entire length of Longshore Street and it is closed off for pedestrian traffic only which is great. The market is on Saturdays from 9 AM to Noon in the summer. For your musical enjoyment, there were several folks performing live music which really adds to the experience. If you would like some breakfast while you shop, Saddleberk sells hot breakfast sandwiches and Sweetwaters has a tent outside their storefront with pastries and coffee (try the Dreamy cold brew). This market is mostly vendors selling speciality foods, gifts, jewelry, etc. I think there were only two or three vendors actually selling fruits and vegetables. Just like in Worthington, lots of big strollers and big dogs. The longest line was at The Crazy Cucumber, so if you are on a pickle run get there early.
