Started with their house made chicken liver with oat crackers - yumm and very generous portion of the liver pate- asked for more bread to spread the creamy pate on it !! Gotta love pate done right! Entrees were amazing . Lamb was tender served on a heaping serving of mashed potatoes with a yummy gravy. This was husbands favorite meal so far - his eyes, nose ( smelled divine) and stomach thank you ! My battered haddock was very good! Huge and I say HUGE haddock was battered and fried to perfection. The fries were good too- just didn't have much room for them. The best part ??? I think we were the only non-locals in the joint! The place is adjoins the Victoria Inn so that's a nice surprise. The town is small and everything closes by 5pm so needless to say we didn't get to explore much. But town looked quaint and historical brick buildings everywhere !

Appetizer The haggis filo was a really interesting presentation, not something that I saw occurring in this area when I left it,and the haggis inside the filo was excellent. The pastry was a little heavy with oil but it worked really well if you could get equal amounts of haggis to pastry in a bite. Lettuce, and purple onions as a garnish atop a single dream base created looked like a thistle / Scottish hillside. Loved it and I could eat quite a few of these. ( you get 2 for your £4. ) Entree: My wife had a lovely smoked haddock atop a bed of mashed potatoes with similar sauce. I would have loved this dish if it weren't for my lack of a decent steak pie in the USA which meant I just had to have a go at this one. The steak pie came with fries, carrot and green beans and a individual pie dish. It was nearly as good as these things can get, without having kidney inside,that aside it was full, the meat was tender and close to falling to bits but not doing so. The crust wasn't heavy and when mixed in with the gravy was a heavenly mush. Kid was treated well. While they don't have a kid's menu perse they have a separate pricing tier for kid's versions of the adult dishes. , service was pleasant and timely ( by UK standards) and I can see myself returning here next time I return home. The Fisherman Pie, which was Haddock, Smoked Haddock and Salmon in a Creamy Leek & Chive Sauce, topped with Mash Potato and Isle of mull Cheddar, was delicious. Where the chicken that this chicken breast came from I don't know but it was definitely doing some serious weightlifting and bulking up. The chicken was beautifully juicy for general pub grub and the bacon was lovely, sweet but slightly salted which gelled all the flavours of the breaded chicken and the toasted roll together. Thinking about it now, I'm getting hungry again. Every time I have a pub burger, the side salad always lets it down, every time, it's like the bars expect people not to eat it, but not this bar. The salad was crisp and fresh, served up with a deliciously sweet vinaigrette that was perfect for dipping a wee bit of the roll in. The spirit measures were 35ml and the guest ales on offer covered breweries such as Innis & Gunn and The Inveralmond Brewery (who do beers such as Lia Fail and Ossian) which justified the bar being about 60-70p more expensive than the others we visited.

This place holds a very special place in my heart…read more Besides having worked here behind the bar, I have many fond memories of late nights and flowing drinks here with friends. It's an unofficial local nexus for Fence Records, the small indie label started by a friend of mine over a decade ago, and chances are if you pop in here on a Friday afternoon you might just run into someone you know. Over the years the Ship has seen its share of music, and like any local pub worth anything it has a healthy cast of regulars who'll you'll find propping up a bar stool everyday. The nautical theme is par for the course in this seaside village, but there are loads of really neat historical shots framed and hanging on the walls that are worth checking out if you're ever in there.
