Going to the apple orchard in the fall is a Midwest tradition. Pleasant Valley is a small, quiet orchard about an hour out of the Cities. We usually stop here in the fall when we're on our way out to my dad's cabin in Hayward. It's a nice break for the kids and not too far off the main highway. You can go out to the trees to pick your own, or grab a bag in their little general store. They have samples in the store so you know which apple variety you would like out of the varieties that are available for picking at the time. Unfortunately, because of the growing seasons of each, you can usually only pick-your-own with a few of the types while you're there, but they offer more in the store. They also have pumpkins, a small barn with chickens and goats, and hay rides for $2 a person. During strawberry season (mid-June to mid-July), you can go pick your own strawberries in their strawberry fields. Given the popularity of apple orchards this time of year, the popular local orchards have caught on and now either don't let you in to their trees to pick your own, or charge you an admission fee just to get in. I can understand why given that I've seen more than one person take a bite of one apple and chuck it. Or eat three apples before coming out of the trees. That probably gets expensive when EVERYONE does it. But really, I've never seen an orchard run OUT of apples. Being that they're out of the Cities a ways, Pleasant Valley still offers the feel of the apple orchards when we were younger. Where you can wander the trees, pick ONE apple to munch one while you're filling your bag. It's an experience I'm happy to give my kids outside of the crowded orchards closer to the Cities.

Cool crafts for kids but staff working the cash registers were kind of rude, good apples and decent pumpkins.

There's no entry fee. There are plenty of areas staged for cute fall photos and a playground area for kiddos with a sandbox. For minimal fees, they offer: apple picking, train rides, and informational tractor rides that provide information about the farm's establishment. There's also a store on site with all sorts of canned goods and tasty baked apple treats. The ambiance was so lovely- relaxed without crowds of people, plenty of parking and beautiful color-changing leaves to appreciate. We enjoyed our visit to Sunrise River and are looking forward to it being an annual family tradition.

They also have bags already prepared if you don't want to pick your own. They have yard games, hayrides but my favorite is the big barn where you can pet the animals. They had donkeys, sheep, baby kittens and bunnies. The store has caramel apples, tons of different homemade jams and salsas, apple cider donuts and other baked goods! They even had life music when I went this past weekend. Parking is super easy. The apple orchard is open Sept-Oct 10am-6pm

They also have crop share that you can opt for at the beginning of the year (I haven't utilized that yet). They grow produce organically and almost everything in the store is what's currently ripe. They also have frozen veggies available for moms like me that don't like to deal with the prep of washing, chopping, bagging up produce for the freezer! I can vouch for their popcorn! It great!! (I ONLY buy organic popcorn). The sweet corn is so good!! They do not grow it on their farm but teams up with another farmer that exclusively grows sweet corn for this. Delivered regularly and they even worked with us to order 8 dozen (the one thing I am willing to prep a d freeze or can for the year...that is, whatever is left over after grilling at least a dozen to eat right away!) They have a self serve set up. You park by the little store, go in, grab a bag and shop for what you want. Write down what you are buying and put the paper into the basket- and the money in the cash box. (Cash only operation) They usually have change of you need it in there). They do have cameras but hey, they are trusting us to be honest and if you ask me, they deserve every cent and then some for all the work they do! All in all, it's really a sweet little set up and the staff here are really friendly when you do run into them! It feels so good to support local! Farmers work hard to produce all this stuff and they deserve every ounce of love and kudos we give them!!

This is the most wholesome place I've been maybe ever. They have a shop where you pick out the produce, frozen meat, eggs, and/or canned goods (pickles, salsa, pasta sauce, etc.) -- you write down what you picked out and leave cash in a box for it. (Bring cash!) The real highlight for us was the farm animals we could visit-- our toddler was obsessed with the baby goats, chickens, and cows we got to see. I can't recommend this spot enough!
