I came here two nights in a row and the first night with Arturo as my bartender was excellent. The house margarita and beers were great and the birria tacos were superb. The second night food was great beer was great but the Ryan the bartender not so great. The house margarita tasted like spiked orange juice and he had no idea how to make it right. My mom really wanted to take the family here when they visited. Overall, it was a fantastic meal! Our server was lively and friendly. As a table of six, I'm sure we weren't the easiest. While traveling through Sioux Falls, South Dakota with my husband, I researched places to eat dinner. In the reviews, Plaza Azteca came highly recommended and it did not disappoint! From the time we were seated until we left the wait staff was excellent, Beth was our server and did such a phenomenal job in keeping up with all the tables she was waiting on! We even had the table side guac made and it was delicious! My husband and I shared the Pina Loca which was served on the inside of a 1/2 of a pineapple, and it was plenty for the two of us with even some left over! The mango chili rita is a must! I usually always get one. Very tasty! I ordered the seafood alambres - it has tilapia, shrimp, scallops, onions, mushrooms, red and green bell peppers and covered with white cheese. It's all put on top of tortillas. It is a big serving, so be hungry. They don't skimp on the shrimp, scallops and tilapia. I wish it came with rice and beans tho. This was the first time I have had slow service here. We waited awhile before our waiter came to take our drink requests. No water brought to the table. The service not like all my other visits. Food was good--prepared with fresh ingredients, arrived hot, and tasted great. Service was also good, but not overbearing. The warm chips and salsa upon arrival was a nice touch, plus a freshly made guacamole cart that moved around the restaurant offering that as well. The restaurant itself is still kept very clean and is relatively new, but it is loud. It's great for all guests, including large groups and those with small children. It can be casual or semi-formal...I saw both. Just know it is loud and bustling. The mixed drink menu is excellent, and offers NA options that are equally flavorful and beautifully made. read more

Nice people. Nice place. Nice location. Nasty food. We came here for lunch today and the elote was disgusting. I got fish tacos and barely ate any of them. My son got the shrimp tacos and didn't like them either so I tasted my other son's beef taco and the meat was clearly cooked days ago. The waiter could tell we weren't happy and took the elote corn off our bill when I asked him to. I wish I would have asked him to take off my wife's shrimp tacos she didn't even touch. He just boxed them up rather than take them away. Not worth the price. $100 down and no one is full or happy. Super disappointed. read more

Visiting Sioux Falls for the first time, based on reviews we chose Plaza Azteca for a late lunch. OMG, everything about this spot is wonderful. The service is friendly & helpful, the margaritas (lime was the best in our opinion) frozen & delicious & the food, yikes, scraped the plate trying to get the last bite. We shared the 3 chicken enchiladas with rice & beans. The chicken was so tender & the flavor outstanding. The rice & beans delicious also. can't describe my disappointment, Plaza Azteca?? More like Plaza Blahteca. Living directly across the street, I was hugely excited that a Mexican restaurant was opening so close. I went there this afternoon. The decor is nice. The walls remind me of a high school cafeteria. The waitress brought us chips, salsa, and some sort of sour cream/ranch dip. The salsa was excellent. I'm not a fan of the other. Chips have no salt. We ordered the chicken fajitas and the Enchiladas El Jefe. After the waitress brought our food out, that was the last we saw of her. Terrible service. The chicken was super bland. I mean, absolutely no seasoning. Refried beans were terrible. The meat in the El Jefe dish was so bland and dry. I think the cook left it in the pan 10 mins too long. I was expecting a great Mexican restaurant and instead got a version of Chipotle. Someone definitely needs to tell the cooks to use seasoning. Nothing about this place will make me come back for more food. One and done for sure. The people leaving this place 5 stars have clearly never eaten authentic Mexican food. read more

Very loud due to the open kitchen design. The fresh hand made guacamole at the table was expensive but truly worth it. The rest of the food was above average. I had the chicken fajitas with flour tortillas. They were good full of flavor and arrived quickly after ordering and sizzling hot. The refried bean were not good and had a different taste to it. Service was great very attentive for being so busy. Avoid the booths when making reservations. They are extremely uncomfortable and the tables are super close to the booths and I am not a big person. read more

First impressions... The layout is interesting. The host station is facing 90 degrees from the entrance. I was a little concerned when we first arrived. There were 3 employees taking and joking and it took a bit for them to acknowledge us. After about a minute they welcomed us and we were seated quickly. Someone other than our server brought us chips and salsa almost immediately. The chips are somewhat thick and a little chewy rather than thin and crispy, also not over salted, which is good. The salsa is good, with a little bite. They also have a white sauce that we were excited to try, hoping it would be like the sauce at La Fiesta (throwback for long time Sioux Falls people), but it wasn't. It was good, but we decided that it was more of a Ranch dressing with some chili spices. My wife ordered California Fish Tacos for $19.00 and I got combo #7 which is a taco, burrito and an enchilada for $14.00. The menu description doesn't say what kind of meat for a #7, but the combo description at the top says "MOST COMBOS ARE MADE WITH GROUND BEEF. MOST COMBOS ARE TOPPED WITH SOUR CREAM. ALL BURRITOS AND ENCHILADAS ARE TOPPED WITH CREAMY CHIPOTLE CHEESE SAUCE." Ambiance.... As we waited for our food I thought it was difficult to have a conversation because of the background noise. Not that it is loud music playing, you have to be attentive to be able to even hear it. It's the crowd noise. The floors are a hard surface, the walls are mostly glass and painted sheetrock and the ceiling is just painted plywood. There is nothing in the architecture to absorb any noise. One other note: We were seated near the servers station. There was one server who was slamming the cabinets closed. Very loud. Food... The food came very quick also. My wife said her fish tacos were quite good. It came with a side of rice and black beans. Portions were nice, on the large side although the rice and beans were a little salty. I ate my taco first and was disappointed not only because of the taste, but the shell was soggy (fell apart) where it touched the plate. The burrito was simply hamburger wrapped in a flour totillia. The enchilada was the same, only in a corn tortilla. Both had an orange colored sauce, melted Montary Jack cheese and crema on top. The hamburger was seasoned differently, and for me, not a pleasant taste. If I return, I will order anything that isn't hamburger. All and all, pretty bland. Why 3 stars? The ambiance removes a star, can't converse with others because of the noise. The hamburger removes part of a star, no flavor. Finally, the price removes a part of a star. $42 with a tip for 3 fish tacos, a beef taco, small enchilada and burrito. WOW! And that's having water to drink. Can't imagine if we would have ordered drinks. read more

Need to start by saying we've been in Sioux Falls for a little under 3 years so far from So. Cal. & there is only 1 Mexican food establishment to date I can wholeheartedly recommend & that's the Flying Santo downtown on Phillips. We've tried Nikki's, Azteca, Gilberto's, Tortilla Hernandez (2nd place), Flying Santo & now Plaza Azteca & I stand by my original recommendation! My wife ordered the Enchiladas Bandera & had 2 bites from each enchilada & threw away the rest. Bland & tasteless meat & our entire order was lukewarm @ best by the time I got home (Less than a mile away. Beal & 82nd) I had Birria tacos w/ rice & beans. Bland & disappointing! No melted cheese in/on the tacos & the consume was kinda flavorful but laked salt/ acidity. I ate all of my tacos because I was hungry & I don't like to waste food. I shouldn't have because after my meal about 20 mins later I felt ill/ lethargic & gassy. 2 orders) The churros were bland & chewy. 2) Horchatas were the best part of the meal. The fried ice cream is still in our freezer the next day & is probably going in the garbage. Oh, & this was her Birthday meal but we'll be going to Oshima this weekend to make it up to her...we originally were gonna go there but after both of us had long days & being tired we opted to try the "new hit spot" close by! Bad call! I cannot for the life of me understand why this place gets such great reviews other than "Some people don't know what they don't know!" Hopefully Mi Casita market (on Mirion) opens its spot next door soon! Because I can only do so much Qudoba & Chipotle! Save your money on the food but the drinks looked great while I waited @ the bar for my order. The staff seemed nice though. Our first trip here was not great, but the second time redeemed it a little bit. We had the same server both times and he doesn't really talk to you at all. The white dip is great and reminds me of Chuy's a bit, but not really spicy at all. Birria tacos were good. It isn't at the top of my list to return, but I would come back. read more

My gf got the T-bone steak and when her steak came it was cooked to perfection but had ZERO seasoning. We asked if they could put seasoning on it and put it on the grill for a minute just to sear the seasoning on the steak. 30 minutes later she gets her steak back and it is over cooked into oblivion. Also took our waitress over 15 minutes to get us a water refill, she also only stopped and checked on us ONCE during this. They don't care if they serve terrible food read more

My first choice for Mexican was Chevys Fresh Med but they were closed so I searched Mexican restaurants and read reviews for each & this restaurant had the best reviews. Most Mexican restaurants are all the same so I was excited to try this. Considering it was a Saturday night we were seated right away & our server took our order right away. What was crazy was how fast the food arrived! My husband had the 2 beef burritos & he enjoyed them. I had the beef enchiladas & beef taco and they were ok, nothing exciting about them. One thing I wish they had an ala cart section. I really wanted to try the California fish tacos. The margaritas at the next table looked great and they do make guacamole table side if you would like it. We were in and out in an hour. The interior is pretty ups ale and not your typical brightly painted Mexican restaurant. It was nice but I would probably not go again. read more

Great flavors! I liked the modern atmosphere with lots of natural light. Service was great, everyone was very friendly and attentive. My Ranchero Special was a LOT of food with a piece of juicy well seasoned chicken and a piece of thin steak that was very tender and easy to cut and very lean. I have come to not expect a lot out of the rice at Mexican restaurants but this was very good, not oily at all and not crunchy. The refried beans were great as well as the pico. Tortillas were soft for some great fajita like action and this plate also comes with one chicken enchilada too sending you completely to the full zone. The chips and salsa were also very tasty with big onions and cilantro. There was a creamy dip with the chips too that had a unique flavor that I was neutral on but my wife loved. She also had the chicken tacos al pastor that had a tangy red sauce and flavorful pineapple on three soft tacos that were overflowing with meat. She ended up taking one home. The Pineapple Serrano and Jalapeño margaritas we had were great too. Could have been a little spicier maybe. Surprised they didn't have different sizes on the margaritas, the default was what you would consider a jumbo at other places but was perfect for us. We will be back to try the premium margaritas as well as some sizzling fajitas! Highly recommended :) read more
