It's not a multiplex and you can't buy nachos, but I think Louth is so lucky to have the Playhouse - lots of small towns (and some bigger ones) don't have their own cinema, and it's a real treat to be able to walk to see a film. OK, the screens aren't particularly big (the best one is the original one, upstairs - the two downstairs are fairly tiny!) but it's rarely crowded so you usually have your pick of seats.
I think Louth's cinema is one of the few in the country still to have an intermission mid-film (completely with an icecream seller), and although I've moaned about it - usually the break comes at a tense point of the film and can disrupt the viewing experience - I think it is a quaint tradition, and a perfect point to replenish icecream or popcorn supplies.
Louth gets films a couple of weeks after everywhere else does, and you can't pre-book your tickets, but apart from that it's a pretty perfect cinema-going experience in my opinion. read more
