You didn't just lose a customer. You bought this review. I was a good customer. When I brought in my Number Two Stratocaster, I told Mike that there was a little buzzing at a couple places. I thought the truss rod needed a slight adjustment, nothing more. But Mike disagreed and said the guitar needed fret work. When I got the guitar back, it was fretting out, a problem that didn't exist before Jerry had aggressively removed material from the frets. Jerry admitted that he had done so, and apologized profusely over the phone, and told me to bring the instrument back. When I returned with the guitar, instead of being treated well, Jerry was quite elevated, aggravated and got loud. As though he was speaking to someone whom he might bully, instead of someone who has been playing guitar for 60 years, he ineptly attempted to prove he'd done nothing wrong, when he should have offered to do whatever it would take to make it right. That's what a gentleman and good business person would do. I do not care how long Mike says he's been in business. That is not the point. Jerry plugged in the guitar to a Line 6 amp with all the effects going, and hit the guitar hard to prove it was really okay. I know better, and showed him how the guitar was fretting out, and now it wouldn't even sustain a single plucked note at the tenth fret. Then, Jerry added insult to injury. He said these "deeply radiused" fretboards always fret out when you stretch the strings. NOT TRUE. I have owned many 9.5 inch radiused Stratocasters and NOT ONE of them ever had that issue... EVER. Then, Jerry got angrier, pulled the plug on the amp, and told me he was refunding my money. Here's the kicker: I brought the guitar downtown to a reputable shop and guess what? They made some adjustments, filed the nut slots a little, checked the action and intonation, AND adjusted the truss rod! That's exactly where I thought the problem was. No one can put back the fret material Jerry filed off. It probably took a year of life off my frets, which means an expensive fret job is that much sooner. But the guys at Players Guitars were wrong with their work... and wrong with their bad treatment. There are much better options than Players, but their name should warn you. Their work is hit or miss. And when they miss, don't be surprised if they try to play you. If you love your instrument and deserve respect, go elsewhere... read more

I was suggested to try this place for set ups by another guitat player. Well, I got my guitar back from getting a set up and blocking the trem. When I got home to play the guitar (should have played before I left, but my dog was in the car) the guitar set up was horrible. Every string buzzed almost all the way up and down the fretboard. The G string buzzed when open! The gloss finish on the edge of the fret board had been filed down when he attempted to "smooth" the fret ends. When he screwed the trem cover plate back on the back he put one screw in diagonal. So that took a chunk out of the finish and that hole is well on its way to being stripped. This was a brand new Squier CV strat. I cannot believe what a crappy job they did. read more

Yesterday evening I brought my 2 guitars in for service. I've never had my les Paul set up and I needed a guitar strap lock done on my acoustic. 10/10! The setup on the les Paul is great! Low action! incredible playability! And the straplock on the acoustic works as it should. I would 100% bring my instruments back to players guitars. I dropped in to get my G&L Doheny V12 set up and they did a great job in good time and for a reasonable price. I dropped in a few weeks later for some items and to inquire about a possible maintenance job on another guitar. Imagine a craftsmen convincing you that you didn't need the work! Not only was the work performed to the highest degree of competence, but the cost was below estimate! They are a highly skilled and personable operation. I've taken my instruments (mostly basses) to Player's for years for setups and repairs, but they don't know me; I'm just a guy who shows up every once in a while and needs something done. Last night, I brought in a bass--one I had purchased from one of those online dealers. The bass had been delivered with a loose jack that was cutting in and out and appeared to be stripped. I figured I could go round and round with the dealer, get an RMA, ship it back and wait a week or two or more to get the issue resolved, or I could just take it to Player's and pay to have it fixed. I took it to Player's... Now I don't want to announce what Mike charged me, but let's just say it was far too little. Far, far too little. He did a setup too, all while I waited. Had the whole thing done in about 15 minutes, then we spent another 10 minutes talking guitars and basses. Good guy, good shop. These guys are the best. There aren't enough joints like this any more. I brought my Heritage H-575 guitar to get it set up because it was a pain to play and I rarely played it. The back story is that the guitar was leaned on a swivel chair and it fell over breaking the head stock. So I sent it back to Heritage and they replaced the neck keeping my tree of life inlay on an ebony finger board in tact. Since it was returned, it played horribly. The high E string kept falling off and the action was high and I rarely played it. So I brought it over the Players hoping a set up was all I needed but was prepared for the worst. Well, Mike looked at it and said it needed a new nut and fret job. The fret job would be difficult with the inlay on an ebony board and that it may not be perfect but would still play great. I appreciated the upfront honesty. I told them to go ahead with the job. A week or so later I got the call to pick it up and I was blown away. They did a super-fantastic job and pointed out one "blemish" around the 16th fret. I would never had noticed if it wasn't pointed out as it was minuscule. The guitar plays great now and I pick it up more often than my other guitars. Also, during my visit, we talked about humidity and another guitar related stuff. Mike had great advice and I followed it. This is a stand-up shop and all the staff there were great as well as other customers that came into the store. I'd rate them higher if I could. read more

So this is for the people shopping around for the best guitar shop in the south burbs. Players does guitars, bass, and amps. That's it. No DJ gear, no drums, no junk... they know guitars damn well so that's what they do. Come here for repairs, they can handle any guitar or amp. They probably see more repairs that any shop around. When its time for new strings, come here for a setup - they'll restring the guitar, check the intonation on the strobe, and tweak it just right. Always some nice vintage guitars and basses on the wall and amps to plug 'em in to for a demo. The prices are fair, and they'll buy used gear as well. They have a small selection of new stuff, most of it for beginners. Anything from the big names will be used. They offer lessons, and I'd recommend them. This is the sort of store your future guitarist should grow up in. The guys that own the shop probably gig every night. They know what works, won't sell you BS, and have what you need, nothing more. Like all the work they do and everything they sell, you'll get a fair price. I've never had sticker shock here... everything is priced what it's worth. My only issue is who sets up my guitars nicer Geno or Mike? Super, down to earth guys that love guitars and music. Also, if you need lessons, I highly recommend, Kurt Bonomo. Great with kids, teens, and adults. Have had friends and family going to Kurt for over 20+ years. There's a whole sleu of Kurtphiles. Also, noted, guitar center and all their corporate cohorts. Funnel the difficult repairs they can't handle to these guys. Your guitars are in good hands. I challenge anywhere in Illinois to find better work for the price. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, prices range from fair to extremely low depending on the service/gear. You get the feeling that the store owners forgot they were supposed to be making a profit because everything is priced with the player in mind. This is one of those stores that I make a point of stopping in on occasion to buy something just to support local music stores. If I need a repair that I can't do myself on my guitar or bass, I go to Players or Hidden Music. Both of these shops do above average work at 1980's prices. They've done basic setup, neck troubleshooting and even a bridge relocation on a homebuilt bass. All done very well and an an excellent price. I came upon this place by chance after another nearby music store was unable to fix a fret problem on my bass. Due to the fact that the guy who works on basses wasn't in when I got there, I reluctantly allowed the owner of Players to take possession of my "baby" in order to give the fret guy a chance to look it over. I got a call from Gerry later that day in which I was assured that the problem could be fixed with a simple fret level. I got my bass back in two days, and the thing plays beautifully. Price was more than fair. Hopefully, my bass won't need any more work for a while, but if it does, I will bring it to Players again. read more

Looked at the guitar and asked how much I said I would like two hundred (would have gone lower) And he said I am not interested. WTF? You have a NEON sign on the front of your shop stating the fact that you buy guitars and wouldn't even give me an offer? I'm sure that they are a great service shop. Great place to have your guitar set up or repaired. Mike is an amazing guitar tech. (Monster player, too! Guitar and bass.) You know his work is high quality because gigging/professional guitarists and bassists have their axes serviced there. Shop has a great vibe with guitars hanging on all the walls. Friendly atmosphere where neighborhood kids come in, plug in, and jam for a bit. Set ups are Mike's specialty. Does them all day long; very efficiently done while you wait. $20 for a pro set up that will have your guitar playing so much easier and better than when you brought it in. Answers all the questions you may have. The shop always has guitar heads and gear heads hanging out talking to Mike while he's doing set ups; very friendly banter. War stories about their latest gigs are constantly thrown about in the shop. Even though pros come into the shop, don't feel intimidated if you are a beginner or a hobbyist.
