Quick snapshot of the man from Independence, MO…read more If you're interested in visiting the Truman house at 219 Delaware, you will need to stop here for tickets and a time slot. This site on Main will put you in touch with the NPS Rangers who will have you watch a short film about the 33rd President, his rise to the Presidency, and his rise attempt to normalize after leaving office. After the film you will have the opportunity to head over to Delaware and visit the Noland House (which belonged to his aunt and uncle), which houses a small assortment of Truman artifacts, or you can stroll from Independence Square (5 blocks to the house), along the same streets that President Truman walked before, during, and after his presidency. The house itself is as it was when Bess Truman passed away in the 1980s. Inside you will find a very unassuming life that her husband attempted to keep. He tried his best to not let his role as leader of the free world get to his head. Despite that, the former president was a point of interest for folks passing through Kansas City and Independence, Missouri. During the 30-ish minutes, Ranger led tour, you can't take photos, but you can certainly understand the Trumans did their best to live a peaceful and "normal" life and that's the way they lived the entire time. It's surprising how many generations of Trumans lived in that tiny little home, but they made the most of it. This site adds another touch to the life of the 33rd POTUS, and adds another layer to the exhibits you can see at the Truman Library and Museum down the road.

The Douglas County Courthouse in Lawrence is a 1903 Richardsonian Romanesque landmark designed by…read moreJohn G. Haskell and Frederick C. Gunn, a pair of architects that the county commissioners asked to collaborate after a design competition left them unable to choose just one. The rough-faced limestone, the arched entries, and the tall square clock tower give the building a heavy, almost fortress-like presence on Massachusetts Street, and it still feels like the kind of place where county business has real weight. Douglas County was founded in 1855 and named for Senator Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois, the same figure tied to the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the popular sovereignty debates that shaped early Kansas politics. Lawrence has always been the county seat, and the city was named for Amos A. Lawrence, the Massachusetts abolitionist who helped fund the New England Emigrant Aid Company's settlement efforts. Stepping inside, you can feel the weight of history here. It's a handsome building, solidly built and worth a stop if you're already wandering downtown Lawrence. Early evening in downtown KCMO (Kansas City, Missouri), the Jackson County Courthouse has that…read moreunmistakable 1930s confidence, a tall limestone tower rising over 12th Street with the kind of clean, vertical lines that make you stop even when the doors are locked for th enight. Completed in 1934, the courthouse is an impressive 295 feet tall with 22 floors, a height that puts it in the same general league as other Depression-era civil towers but noticeably shorter than Kansas City's flashier private skyscrapers of the era like the Power & Light Building (476 feet) and 909 Walnut (471 feet). You can see the clear Public Works Administration Moderne and Art Deco elements in the facade. It's the stripped-down classicism and geometric ornament with a vertical push that fits right into the skyline. The building was designed primarily by Wight & Wight and consulting architect Edward F. Neild, whose Shreveport Louisiana courthouse inspired then presiding judge Harry S. Truman's vision for the project. Neild was later commissioned to design the Truman Presidential Library, but died before it was completed. Walking around the exterior, you can see why Truman was proud of it. the carved limestone at the base, the rhythmic window grid and the restrained but confident massing all feel like a civic anchor rather than a showpiece. Jackson County itself was formed in 1826 and named for Andrew Jackson, then a US Senator and soon to be President. Even with the courthouse closed for the evening, the plaza and nearby blocks make it an easy stop with parking nearby, a quick walk around the tower, and a chance to take in one of KCMO's most important landmarks before heading out. On a hot afternoon in Kansas City, Kansas (KCK), the Wyandotte County Courthouse sits there with…read morethat solid early twentieth-century confidence. It's a 1927 building designed by the Kansas City firm of Rose & Peterson in a clean Classical Revival style that leans on symmetry, tall columns and a sense of civic permanence. Wyandotte County itself was formed in 1859 and named for the Wyandot people, whose history in the region runs deep, and KCK has always been the county seat. The city takes its name from the larger Kansas City across the river and the split exists because the Missouri River ended up being both a boundary line and a magnet for settlement on both sides, with two separate municipalities growing up independently and never merging. Inside the courthouse, most of the cases are the steady stream of county business, though the building has seen its share of notable criminal trials over the decades, especially during the mid-century when KCK was dealing with organized crime and political corruption investigations. It's a handsome structure, well kept, and worth a stop if you're already exploring downtown. It's not the flashiest courthouse in Kansas, but it carries its history well and it fits the city around it. [Review 812 of 2026 - 147 in Kansas - 25992 overall]
