When it comes to Plato's closet there are a semi-good place to buy from however they overcharge you, you basically sell them your stuff for free. I've taken pamphlets home on what they were looking for brought in exactly what they were looking for and they've offered me $3 for five items All of which were name brand ( new with tags) I said no I will take my clothes back and the lady at the register gave me a dirty look if you're going to overcharge for your clothes but you can't even match 1/3 of the price of the actual value that should be theft read more

I usually avoid Plato's...but this location is by far the best one I've been to. The girls here are kind and not snobby like those at most other locations I've been to. I wish I had asked the names of the two girls that helped me today because they were both great! I got a lot more money for my items than I thought I would too, so that was an added bonus. Tried to support these guys but it turned into a hassle and overall pain. After cleaning out our closets, we brought about 5 giant ikea bags that sell to them. We know they are strict and we'd probably have a few things to donate elsewhere. Once they called our name, they told us they didn't want a single item. Everything was "too professional and too high end." We had things from Banana Republic, Gap, American Eagle, Hollister, and others and some things even had the tags on them. Will not being coming to this location again. It's nothing but a bunch of judgmental 16 year olds who have no customer service skills whatsoever. I am usually happy with their buying service. They usually buy my clothes; however, what I'm unhappy with is that they are constantly rude and unfriendly. I have purchased shoes and accessories from here. They have always said shoes are non refundable; however, they've NEVER said that accessories aren't. This past week I purchased a hat. I even asked the cashier if it would be returnable if I decided I didn't like it because the security tag was on it it when I tried it on. She said yep so I took my receipt and kept the tag on the hat. It turns out I didn't like it and when I went to return it they wouldn't let me because "accessories aren't returnable." No where on the receipt in the refund policy for on their website does it say accessories aren't returnable. It only says SHOES. They were extremely rude in trying to "solve" this issue and I ended up taking my hat back and leaving. You should consider updating your refund policy on your receipts and website if this is true and also hiring competent, friendly associates. read more

I came to sell some clothes this morning at 10:15am and there was nobody there, all lights are off and the doors locked.. there was a sign in the door stating they closed early the night before due to weather but would resume the normal business hours (open at 10am) and that obviously isn't the case. very frustrating when I make a lengthy drive to get here. 0/5 stars. read more

My first sell at this Plato's was pretty disappointing. They took one shoo-in item (and gave me a decent price for it- that's worth one star alone), but didn't take the items I was certain would appeal to their "aesthetic." Other Yelpers' gripes of them turning away "professional" clothing are accurate. I was referred to their adjacent sister store Style Encore to sell those. The selection of items in the store is kind of dismal; lots of out of season (like as in sundresses and sandals in November) Charlotte Russe, Forever 21, and Target brands. Most items in XS-M, definitely a store for tweens, teens, and hopelessly out-of-vogue twenty-somethings. read more

This location has the BEST shoe selection!! Whenever I go in they always have Jordans, Uggs and other amazing shoes brands in store. They're not priced too high and the store is always clean when I have gone. I have no sold here so I am not sure how that part of Plato's works. Customer service experiance of about 1 month combine between all the employees. Super fake tone. They rejected common brands they sell like wild fable, forever 21 and shein because it was "over a year old". All of the clothes purchased in the last year; they over exagerated to age of my clothes and gave me nothing. They try saying things like "We loved your clothes! But...." They seem to hold a high standard yet sell worse close than regular thrift stores you donate to for free. Overall the staff is trashy and does not know how to communicate on a basic human level. I'm all for consignment and resell stores for a variety of reasons (helping the community, reuse/recycle, providing jobs, getting a bargain,) and I'll proudly shop them for these reasons. Sadly though, Plato's current rating of two and half stars seems accurate for this store. First, if you are a seller you must understand that they have to actually sell the merchandise they take in - it's not a charity - so they have to be picky in what they take. However the attitude of the store staff extends beyond picky to smug, condescending, and just plain board- they seem to hate their job. They also insist that you must stay in the store while they look through your things. I get the sales tactic- keep me looking around to buy something - but if I need to run next door for a moment, respect that, and just look though the things. And like another reviewer said, I've been told my clothes are "too professional" to take. I interpreted this as not having enough glitter and plastic graphics on them. And that leads to my second point- this is not an upscale resale store either in quality or style. Looking around Plato's, the only items they seem to sell are Old Navy, Aeropostale , the various Target brands, and Forever21, squarely aimed at the 12-15 year old age group. These are brands that you can buy new in the store for less than what's sold here, and you don't have to contend with it being stretched out, torn, or faded. Plato's has always been the place to go. I'm not sure if we were confused of the closing time, or if the girls working were too scared to tell us they closed at 5. There was a young lady (curly hair I believe), who was evidently upset that we were there and notified us they were going to be closing the drawers around 5:30. Again, we thought you closed at 6 due to the times on the door. We felt pretty uncomfortable, someone let us know there can be only one person in the fitting room (after being in a room for over an hour to help my friend find a dress for an event). They were also closing the drawers very obviously by setting them on the counters and counting the change (which we honestly do not not mind considering we both have worked retail), but we were receiving glares and really poor customer service when we were rung out. We thanked our cashier and she just responded by telling us how to push the door handle down to exit the store. My friend ended up leaving with only two out of the five things she wanted because she was upset and wanted to leave ASAP. She would've spent closer for $80 but left spending around $10. We would've been completely fine with leaving at 5pm if asked, we had no idea, hopefully next time they feel they can notify us! read more

I have had a lot of experience in retail and resale especially. I have worked for a resale a consignment teen clothing store, so I'm aware of what is acceptable and what is not. That being said, I have never had a pleasant experience at Plato's Closet. Whenever I take clothes in I try and bring in things that are in great condition, good brands, and that fits the season. However, they always find something wrong with the nicer things and take the semi trashed pieces. They also give out way too much cash for the pieces they do take, even though the pieces they didn't would have sold for more. I don't understand their buying tactics at all. their store has WAY too many items in it and you have to dig and dig to find anything decent. There have been so many times where I find clothes that are completely worn or have a ton of holes in them. They overprice brands like American Eagle and Hollister and don't charge enough for some of the designer brands they carry. It's just a mess. The final and main reason I dislike Plato's Closet is the staff. I have never encountered worse customer service before. I am an adult and probably older then most of the people who work there and they always talk down to me like I'm a kid or don't know anything. They all have an attitude and are very condescending. And I get it, to an extent. I work in retail and customer service so I know the kinds of people you deal with on a daily basis. And it's not always easy to be nice. But when you have customers who are being courteous and treating you with respect, you also treat them with respect. You don't treat them like an inconvenience. It really is a shame, because I love supporting resale shops and buying things second hand. And there are so few places in Grand Rapids to do that. I was not selling on my visit to this location, so consider this review one sided from the buying perspective. As a buyer, I thought the selection was decent compared to what I've seen in other locations, though like many of the others definitely skewed towards the trendy and disposable. I'd only run in for a quick look-see as I had limited time and based on what I discovered I can safely say: I've seen worse. I see a lot of negative reviews for this location but it seems many are complaining about the fact that their clothes weren't purchased. Sour grapes? Perhaps, but it may also be that your items were just not disposable enough; lucky you. It appeared that most of the clothing and shoes were selected less for condition and more for current desire for that particular brand. If it isn't trendy, it's likely not going to fly here. I'll take quality over trendy any day, but consider that most of the clothing here is marketed for the teens to 20 somethings, you're likelier to find disposable clothing items than something you'll keep for years of repeated wear. Seller beware, apparently they're only interested in the trendy stuff and buyer keep that in mind when visiting....this stuff will be out of style soon and isn't built to last. read more

They take too long to go through FIVE ITEMS and it's not even worth it in the end. All of the employees are very rude about selling anything. I have taken so many clothes from brands such as H&M, Agaci, Charlotte Russ, forever 21 and its all in great condition. No holes or stains. They never want my clothes. I never understand. I agree with previous comments I would rate this business a big fat ZERO! Not worthy of anything higher of a rating. The guy at clothing drop off was rude and unprofessional. The money he gave for brand name items was sickening and a complete rip off. The girl manager the next day when I inquired about their pricing requirements was even more unprofessional and didn't make eye contact and waited on other customers and took phone calls before even acknowledging me and my questions despite her knowing I was there to speak to her. Girl that looked through my stuff rolled her eyes at me and then got mad and sassy when I had to repeat myself multiple times about what bag I was selling. For some reason that upset her so she then didn't look through all my things, didn't buy any and was very rude as I left. Also watched her listen to a separate conversation instead of doing her job. Will never return staff is always extremely rude and if you don't walk in begging to have something bought they just won't but it because they don't like you. They had a large selection, and a lot of the shirts were very cool and stylish. Many people complain about the fact that they often turn down clothes, but honestly, that only makes the store better because you can guarantee all of your clothes are clean and new. I almost never give out four stars ever. But I would like to highlight the fact that, true, it does take some time to process your clothing. And I would not recommend selling your clothing and feeling entitled to a full refund for what you paid originally for them. Its just not going to happen. Sure their clothing is all over the place and its also not just for "larger" people. If you are in college or feeling financially responsible go here and youll get 5 or 6 tops for 40 bucks. Buy 5 or 6 tops at the mall across the street and your gonna spend $100+. The girls they hire are very young, however, there are also older women there as well. As I was walking around they asked me if I wanted to start a bin so I didnt have to carry all my stuff around (which actually got me in trouble, oops). As a retail employee myself at the mall I can appriciate being asked by two or three people. Do not sell if you can. But do not get mad either if they dont take your pilly sweatshirts, faded jeans, or salt covered ugg boots. They run a business. Hence, "its just business". I came in for my second time ever trying to sell some clothes. My first time was such a disaster of a headache I vowed never to go back. However I decided to give a second chance. After about 10minutes of standing at the counter with my bag of clothes and not being greeted I finally flagged someone down. After finally checking my clothes in and listening to other sellers who were clearly upset about having to wait for so long I check out the store. I love Plato's! I shop there all the time and I love the selection they have. Plato's is like a better quality goodwill because if the selective-ness and the fact they PAY you for your old clothes that are still good. I hate how people review them poorly just based on bringing in their clothes and how selective Plato's is. They are selective so they can have the most current and stylish clothing for people and the employees are trained for doing that. Every time I bring in some clothing I get fair prices. They research the item and then price it around 60-70% off and then give you about 30-50% of that price. I recently applied for a job and am very excited to hear back. They only bad thing about Plato's is that they are kind of bad with phones and getting back to you. I was first supposed to hear back about a week ago if I get the position or not, there were inconveniences that extended that time to this week and I have yet to still hear back. I've been an avid shopper for years. I'm a young adult female who dresses casually. I buy all my jeans, sweaters and tshirts here. Way cheaper than a mall or department store. Walking out of a store with 3 pairs of jeans, 2 designer shirts and a pair of boots for just under 60$ feels good. The only issue I have is I have, numerous times, taken gently used clothes to sell and they claim some stain or thread is evident...I've bought stuff before from them that had a hole or stain....but. who am I to complain!
