Honestly, this review is gonna be really mixed. I'm having a hard time understanding why no other resale shop in the area charges sales tax and yet this one gets away with it (the items have already been taxed. They were purchased new at one point.) That all being said, they are priced really fairly and I almost always find something to buy. I don't have a lot of luck selling things to them, and generally only get a few dollars here and there but the have a good selection of fashionable clothes. read more

I love going to Plato's to sell clothes or to find stuff last minute. I feel like they have a good selection there. the staff is always so sweet and always helpful. I've never had a problem. It's a pretty clean store, and the team there is always doing something. Never a down moment. It's nice if you don't want to spend 80 dollars on an item and they usually have something for everyone. Parking is easy, the street coming on to it is busy so just be prepared. Also during rush hours they are pretty busy, I only go on weekdays or early morning on weekends. read more

I have been to this location several times over the years trying to sell clothes, and I think I'm at the point of giving up. Today I waited for over an hour for the associates to go through the two bags of clothes I brought in, and they did not purchase anything. I only take things I know are in style and brand name, since I know they rarely purchase anything at all. At the same time, when I am shopping there the items for sale have holes, stains, are extremely worn, etc. I have purchased a few items such as jewelry and shoes there in the past, but never clothes since the selection tends to be in poor shape for the price. I'm not sure what they are looking for, but I have made my last stop at this location. I have had much better experiences at different locations. read more

I've been to this location a few times now, and the clothing in stock is still disappointing. There isn't much variety and it isn't surprising anymore to see a pit stain or holes. I tried to swap a couple shirts there once and was told they only bought younger styles. I wondered if it was because I, not the clothes, looked older, so I bought a top in the store and returned a few weeks later to swap. Got told the same thing. Next time I should send the same shirt in with a teenager to test the theory. Anyway, if they could start choosing better quality and variety I would shop there again. I want to see them become successful, especially in such a challenging location- it's difficult to know it's back there. But they need to put in the effort. read more

Don't waste your time coming on a Sunday. The staff is awful, I was not allowed to leave the store while they sorted my clothing because it was 2 and a half hours before closing and "all of the clothes need to be tagged by 4" sorry not my problem. zero stars if possible. literally just don't waste your time or energy on this place. i took in at least $500 worth of new/gently worn clothes, shoes, jewelry, and bags. half of them still had tags on them, and they didn't take any of it. the text service said they would be done at 12, and they called me back at 11:15, about five minutes after ithe service said they started sorting. the two girls at the counter (one with ginger wavy hair and the other with a dirty blonde/brunette pony tail) looked and talked at me as if i was bothering them. the reason they told me they couldn't take anything was that some of the brands they don't carry. i'm just confused on this one as she said "some" and there were nice brands in there, such as Lane Bryant, Marshall Brands, and Hot Topic. i'm planning on taking all of this to a different consignment shop, i'll update this review with the results of that trip. -5/10, rude employees and a waste of time. read more

One proceeded to look through my Jcrew, Express and Nike items that I've only worn a few times and said they are too old and worn. I would give it 5 stars but it seems as though the white girls were bossing around the only employee of color, Marleigh. Anytime I needed anything (like checking out or just unlocking a fitting room) they would yell for marleigh to come do it from across the store, even though there were 4 other employees closer. As well as doing majority of the tasks jn the store, she was also doing all of the drop off of clothes. They asked her if she "needed a break because she gets off at 4 and its already 1" and marleigh looked at them and said "you guys dont want me to take a break" (because thats the way it was asked). The white employees also tried to accuse my black friend of stealing and looked at the hoodie she had brought in with her and taken off because it was hot, and said "Are you gonna pay for that???" Overall, give Marleigh a raise and mandate diversity training to your employees. Whether this was intentional or not, it was cunty, and NOT in a good way. read more

I've sold/bought from this company for a little under 10 years now. And honestly I'm disappointed to what it's come to. They've changed so much since I first started to buy and sell from them. It went from accepting good conditioned or unworn clothes. The part that sucks is I had a least one item of everything they tell you they are looking for but don't take it at all. They've become so limited to what they accept. And not only are you dismissing ppl who might want or actually need a lil pocket change too not accepting something that someone else might need that is actually less fortunate and might look to Plato's for that said item. Such as athletic wear/shoes. Never thought I be this disappointed with how much Plato's has changed. Definitely lost a buyer/seller out of me. And after reading more reviews I doubled checked my bag to see if was even gone through and I can say it doesn't seem like it was gone through not even the slightest so really what is the point of saying y'all take clothes. The most judgmental girls I've ever met. Told me I needed to buy a bin for them to look at my clothes, when in reality they we're probably just too lazy to look through them. They were in trash bags and she said "they don't except clothes in trash bags." And that if I went to go get a bin or paid for their bag I could have them look. I came here today to sell some of my barely-worn clothing. The ladies behind the counter were friendly, kind, and timely in sorting through my clothes. I was offered a decent amount of the few items Plato's Closet selected. However, probably 75% of items I brought in weren't purchased. I was told that much of my clothing was "too mature" for their store whose average shopper is a teen. My items that weren't purchased by Plato's Closet were J Crew, Vineyard Vines, Banana Republic, and Lilly Pulitzer. I'm not sure which teens they're targeting, but teens in Charleston do wear these brands! Plato's Closet missed out on a good sale today. read more

Prior to going I had read the recent reviews but I was going to be in the area and I am moving in a month. I am trying to get rid of as much as possible so figured whats the harm in going and I didn't have high expectations. (I've been to other locations but first time at this location) I brought a bag of clean folded clothes in a reusable bag, and got there a few minutes after they opened. The girl who helped me seemed nice - signed me in, took the bag and said it would be 20/25 mins. I said great and left. I ran errands and came back to find my bag wasn't ready (through the website) I checked the website where you sign in to see where in the process it was. Mind you it's been 50 mins at this point, and it still says in queue. I kept refreshing it- still in the same place (queue). It's over an hour and I refreshed it again says the same thing and then I get a text saying my bag was ready to be picked up. Thought it was weird because it will usually go to sorting and then finalizing on the site, but just chalked it up that maybe the site was acting up. I go in and they tell me they aren't taking anything. I said okay fine. Thought it was a little strange, I had new with tag items from this season from brands I know they take and seek as well as other items that were maybe a year old. I go back into my car to look through the bag to see they didn't go through it. Everything was exactly how I handed it to them. The only difference was a few pieces moved on the top. Great used clothing store in West Ashley. I've sold two bags of clothing at this location and have also gotten a good amount of money for my clothing. Their buy back rates are very fair. Additionally, the staff is very friendly and helpful. I've never sold clothing to a place like this before and they walked be through the whole process. One of the best Plato's locations I've been to! The staff is very nice- especially the girl who I believe is the manager (she's almost always there). They can be picky about what clothes they buy from you, but every location is. They've always purchased at least a few items from me each trip (which is better than nothing!!) Their women's clothing selection is pretty good (only location I've been to with a better selection was right next to a college campus, so all the students were bringing their cute stuff there). 10000% better than the North Charleston clothes selection. They have a range of styles for a lot of ages (sometimes I get going-out clothes, office work clothes, everyday clothes, or wedding guest dresses) Lots of athletic-wear and tons of cute sweaters in the winter! The regular shirt/tops section can be annoying to look through, but if you have time then you can find some good stuff. Men's selection is improving! It's small but a lot bigger than it used to be. Men's clothes are mostly preppy or sporty styles. The XL section is very small for men's (so if you're a tall guy you prob won't be shopping long). Overall a great location! I love Platos Closet, however this one is awful. The staff is always so rude and a lot of their clothes are stained and ripped. In fact, the staff is so rude that I play a game with my friends called "who can find the rudest employee". Also, I brought clothes in (most of which were trendy and lightly worn) and the took almost none of it. This would be totally fine if they appeared to have high standards... yet half the clothes I found in store were ripped, dirty, or what I wore on middle school. Everyone's style is different so I'm not offended if they don't want my clothes, but it's another thing if the clothes they are accepting and selling is garbage. read more

There was a blonde who wouldn't take her eyes off me or my boyfriend and made us very comfortable and after saying thank you for everything they ignored us and walked away. If you buy multiple sizes of clothes, they flag your account and refuse to let you be apart of the points system. He thinks that his opinion of what you do with clothes after you purchase supersedes policy. This is by far the worst platos closet I've ever been to. I made the assumption they would treat all their customers equally but I was wrong. Apparently the owner decides which customers deserve loyalty points and discounts and filters out people who don't. Because I am a "reseller" they've decided that I can't have any rewards, despite how much business I bring them. Not to mention, they don't want to support small businesses or students trying to save up extra cash. If you're a reseller on posh, Mercari or instagram, don't bother going here. I've spent more than $2,000 supporting this store but I will not go back. They clearly have no idea how to run a business. read more

I've only sold at this location. I think their rates are fair and they work fast to go through your things and get you out the door, so not a lot of waiting. I was however kind of upset at how they treated the clothes they didn't want to purchase from me. They literally threw them back into the hamper I brought them in without folding them. i thrift all the time & i almost always stop here- for a plato's closet they have a wonderful selection and i've found a few genuine vintage pieces here. while the prices are a little higher than average thrift stores, the condition of the clothing is consistently good & worth the price. the staff at this location is SO much friendlier and more helpful than any other i've been to & they do a great job keeping the place clean. read more

First time visiting a PC & was looking forward to getting rid of my clothes that I don't use. I had about 4 bags of clothes, shoes and accessories. Had to wait 30 mins for it be reviewed & when I was called back, I was told 3 things were being accepted. Out of like 100. My face said it all so the cashier started explaining that the things I had were too mature and don't sell good in the store. My Loft jeans were too mature but the 6 inch JS heels for sale aren't. I know plenty of 15 year old young teens who would wear those. Meanwhile, I had an authentic coach purse that wasn't accepted yet they had about 20 for sale...all over $30. I won't be returning, I'll have to find an "adult consignment" I suppose. I should've known when I walked in & everyone employed there looked like they were in middle school. read more

My friends and I came in really excited to sell our clothes and were immediately greeted by rude workers. As soon as my friends and I came in they started complaining at how long it was going to take to sort through all the clothes (as if that's not their job). The workers were extremely rude to my friends and I and did not even try to hide the fact that they were talking about us. They also thought my friend and I were stealing when we simply went to the bathroom and left our clothes with our friends so that they wouldn't think that. We were honestly super offended and it was extremely rude and unprofessional. They continued to talk about us like we couldn't hear them and then didn't take most of our clothing, a lot of which were new and some with tags, so it was hard to feel like it wasn't personal since they clearly had some issue with us.
