Man, listen -- I've been coming here for years and always loved it. But lately? It's been a total waste of time and money. The management is so disorganized, it's ridiculous. If you want to sell your clothes, you might as well give them away on the street -- it would be faster! They set specific days for donation drop-offs, but somehow they're never accepting donations because they don't hire enough staff -- mostly just family members and high school kids running the store. They even put up a big, dirty sign cutting off drop-off times just 45 minutes into the scheduled day. Honestly, I'm so tired of driving all the way here just to be disappointed. What used to be a dope store and great experience is now absolutely the worst. If you want to sell your stuff, go to Clifton Park instead -- their store is way better. read more

Actually really disappointed I've called 3 different times over the last 2 weeks to find a good time to come down. When I did I brought in a bin the just cracked when I took it out the car. Spoke to an older lady that was dismissive and rude saying "we can't take this" Told her my situation and she just walked away. I then asked if they had a bin I could use and she told me "No" in a condescending way Told me to put it in a bag. Which I was previously told I can't bring a bag in. For starters, Plato's Closet is a terrible place to do business with lately. If I could give them no stars I would. I had to wait in a long line with my clothes today, like I was waiting in line for some grand opening or concert tickets, all because they went all week without taking clothing. Then they decided they would take clothing on Saturday morning... bad idea. You need to call before you decide to bring your clothes in to the store because they do not accept them everyday, only when the whim strikes the owner. Also, the owner keeps changing the rules, i.e. when you can bring your clothes in and what type of container you need to use. No trash bags are allowed. This store only accepts certain brands, they want mostly clothes for young people, the owner told me "think Hollister", etc. What nerve! Finally, the merchandise here is extremely overpriced. They did not take any of my clothing. I had clothes from Express and Title Nine in my container. Everything was clean and in great shape. If I sent a young person in with the clothes, they might have wanted to take them. I don't think they want to do business with older people. Long story short, I am done with Plato's Closet and most of these consignment shops in my area. My stuff will go to Goodwill because I don't like wasting my time with all this nonsense! read more

Took my items right away but after three hours I called and asked about the status of my clothing and they said it will be done tomorrow. I live 3 hours away and work a job so coming back the next day isn't reasonable. They should definitely inform the seller of that as some are not from the area/work jobs and have things to do. The employees were nice but I think if you are going to sell I recommend the Vermont location. Yes it's far but they are far quicker. read more

The service is terrible. I brought stuff in on a Saturday and it is now a Thursday and they had my stuff ready. They took basically nothing and I had a lot of summer items in that. The fact that it took almost a week and when I called I got hung up on, called back and they said my bin was ready but let me check, then got hung up on again. I had to be in Albany for a day for work and decided I'd take advantage of the opportunity to sell clothes to Plato's. It says online they buy all day every day. I arrived at the Albany store and I immediately saw a sign they weren't buying today. It does not say this anywhere online. I decided to go in anyway and see if they would help me and explain that I will only be in town for 24 hrs and I have to go back to Beacon, NY the next morning. The owner insisted he couldn't do it. Racists. They don't take clothing from people of color, specifically blacks. Their excuse is "condition". basically, they don't think want second hand stuff from blacks. I asked and the other employee had no idea why they said condition and was fine with re-evaluating. I was called back by the original person and they had a Major attitude in the phone " she is new. come get your items..." I had unworn and shoes clothes with tags on and I felt as though the individual passed off discriminatory energy when I first came in to drop off the items. not everyone in there may be racist but being that one employee represents the entire store, I don't feel comfortable going back every again. She was too confident in how she was treating me and I feel as though it was racially motivated because like I said, even the other employee was confused if some items still had tags and were unworn. I had all 4 seasons in my bags. I also mentioned all of this to them and they said "yeah- we don't do that.. come get your items." I feel like most of the bad reviews here are because people get salty that Platos won't take a bunch of stuff and when they do take something you get pennies on the dollar. But that has always been the way. If you're looking to sell your clothes and make a decent amount of what you spent back then you're gonna have to go on poshmark or Depop, and deal with customers and shipping. If you'd rather get a couple bucks than donate it all, then use Platos, just don't expect them to take it all and give you a wad of cash. It will never happen. My five stars is because I finally checked out the newer Colonie location and it was awesome! I prefer driving to Clifton Park but I'm willing to make the trip to this location now that I've checked it out! It was stocked really well and the plus section wasn't bad! I found a really nice new bag, two infinity scarves and a locket. But I wasn't looking to haul a bunch of clothes today. They did have a decent plus selection as mentioned and that's super hard to find most of the time when thrifting. Cute shoes too and lots of fun accessories. I just really really liked it! My bestie did try and sell a bunch of cute clothes and they rejected a ton and offered like $14 for the rest, but the lady at the counter was much much older and dressed very.... interesting. So ya can't take it personal when the fashion gate keeper is somebodies eccentric nana. Go to shop, or potentially discard some excess clothes for a buck, never expect to make coin. The website says they are open till 9. The sign on the front door says they are open until 9. But they close at 8pm. "Corporate makes us say we are open until 9 but we are only open until 8." WTH??? In other words "we don't care about you or your time one whit". The games they make you play to sell items here are absolutely insane. They will only give you cash for items until they use up the cash in the register. How does this make sense to anyone??? Avoid this scam and buy and sell your items on poshmark or another website. read more

Found this place to not have a good selection of used clothing. The items were not in good repair, pilling, hanger marks and from low quality brands. Wasn't really worth the trip. Some decent items but you would have to pick through, same as you would at goodwill. read more

The selection of clothes available isn't bad. I haven't seen anything priced over $15. Be prepared to search through racks of clothes though. My issue with this store lies in what they accept. I've brought in two big bags of clothes, which were really sell-able. All teeny bopper designers: Lucky, Abercrombie, Levis, Hollister, Express, J Crew. On both occasions, they accepted the junk clothes and not the pieces I thought would interest them for sure. They literally accepted a yellow, pit-stained Abercrombie tank top, but not a brand new Levis dress with tags still attached. I also brought in my husband's Hickey Freeman button-down (retails at $210). It was in perfect condition but they literally just tossed it aside and said no. The girls that work there have no idea about fashion or brands. They've overlooked pieces I brought in by Max Mara, Olivia + Joy, Halston Heritage, Ralph Lauren, etc. I know that some higher end pieces I have should go to a consignment store, but I was donating them anyway and haven't found a good one in the area (having just moved up here from Manhattan). As Lai-Yee pointed out, this primarily caters to the teeny bopper crowd. Many of the clothes are probably a little too young for me. Still, on occasion I've managed to find a few good items, including the perfect blazer and cardigan for an autumn wedding I was going to. Not knowing how the weather would be that day, I figured I better layer up. I also found of my favorite pair of jeans here for about ten bucks. The jeans selection is one of the store's largest, and most of them are pretty well priced. The majority of clothing here comes from youth-oriented brands like Urban Outfitters, American Eagle, Abercrombie, Aeropostale, Hollister, etc. There's a decent accessories section too., If you're like me and don't really care whether the shirt you're wearing is this season or last, you'll probably be able to find something here. I keep meaning to try selling some of my clothes here, but I suspect they may not be "hip" enough. read more

This place is a scam, tell me how I brought no lie about 80 items and they only took 11???? Their protocol makes no sense for what they can and can't accept I knew I should've went to the city mission/good will first but wanted some extra cash because I'm moving .... This place is a joke... I would love to see the clothes they actually accept! All of my clothes were in near perfect condition, being from American Eagle, Calvin Klein, etc. They apparently didn't fit the age group they were looking for... so when did jeans and professional work pants go out of style is my question?? Do they expect people to go out and shop this season's styles and bring them right over? Last time I checked this was a used clothing store. They referred us next door to see if they would take anything, I guess Plato's didn't want to take the time to go through my things. Arrived at 10 am and told us to come back at 4 pm. Plato's Closet, where do I start? I'll start by saying they completely SUCK. I went there a few years ago with a brand new pair of Nike sneakers (never worn, because they never fit) I was told they are too worn down and I will not be receiving money. They never offered to give them back to me, so like an idiot, I left them there. Brands like POLO, were denied as well for being worn down (shirts were worn once or twice). Anyone shopping at Plato's Closet for clothes isn't going to be upset about a pit stain or 2. People behind the counter were rude and repulsive. I shared my experience on Facebook, to then realize it was deleted. Needless to say, I will never go back there, EVER, and nothing makes me smile more than seeing them out of business. Whether you're buying or selling clothes at Plato's, you need to have a LOT of patience. If you're buying, then be prepared to look through a ton of clothes only find a few items you really like. Sometimes it's worth the look, as you can get really great items for pretty cheap. Most of the time, however, I find that they put ridiculous prices on some items and I can't justify spending that much on a secondhand piece when I could buy something very similar (and unworn) at Target for the same price. If you're selling, then you'll need to have patience with the staff. They're not exactly friendly. On one occasion I was told my clothes were too "mature looking" and to go sell them at Clothes Mentor, even though I saw several of the exact same items I was selling hanging on Plato's racks. I have sold clothes to Plato's on several occasions and I still can't figure out their process. Sometimes items I'm positive they'll take, they don't. I usually bring in a couple shopping bags full of stuff and they'll take the equivalent of one bag full, which I generally get around $25 for. I got about $70 once, but that was only after I made them go through my bag again after they said the rejects were too worn, even though the top few items in the reject pile were brand new. Despite the service not being that great, Plato's is worth the look if you have a free afternoon. As mentioned in other reviews, it definitely caters to the much younger crowd but there are a few gems you may discover in your search through the racks. I recommend going to the Schenectady store rather than the Albany one, as it's less picked through and has nicer sales people. read more

If I could give negative stars, I would. This place is the biggest rip off with the biggest idiots working behind the counter, who know NOTHING about fashion. I've come here on numerous occasions with designer clothing. I'm talking DKNY, Armani Exchange, Express, Jessica Simpson, POLO etc. Brands that retail for high prices. I've been told that the "tag is too old", or their "tag locator" (whatever the hell that is) determined that the item is too old. Maybe I missed the memo but, do they think people who are shopping for USED clothes care how old something is? No. They're looking for a good deal. I got offered 3$ for a pair of 113$ shoes that were worn once! My sister's BRAND NEW Jessica Simpson pumps were turned away for being "too basic", yet they carry the same exact style crap shoes from Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe. Gag. I've waited over 2 hours for a bag of clothes to be looked through. Who's making the determinations on what they keep? 12 year olds? The girls who work here are total bimbos and there is ZERO consistency with their buy back. If you go one day you can have one girl tell you they'll buy your clothes back, but another will turn away every single item. I would rather donate than sell to this dump. They claim that clothes mentor is their company for more "mature brands". Sure. This place is a gold mine if you have any Hollister, American Eagle, and Abercrombie, aka junk. I would recommend anyone looking to sell their clothes, set up a poshmark closet online it's way more lucrative. Just going inside this place reminds me of all the times they denied me, and it makes me mad just thinking about it. NEVER AGAIN will I attempt to sell my clothes to this place. read more

This place has got to be a godsend to parents with teenagers who are always begging for brand labels. They had a nice selection of clothes in here primarily, as others have said, from labels geared towards juniors like Aeropostale, Urban Outfitters, Forver 21, Express, etc. I found two really nice shirts I liked from Express but they had deodorant stains on the underarms and were $6. Now, I can get perfectly new t-shirts from Express on clearance for about $10 so I wasn't having it. They also had a nice selection of handbags and some Coach bags in really, really good condition. The prices on the Coach bags were between $30- $60. If you're looking for a funky, slightly teen style Coach bag in pink and other bright colors, definitely check this place out. I was not very impressed with their other accessories, however. They looked really cheap, like straight out of the dollar store cheap. It's definitely fun to browse here. You can be entertained for awhile and as someone said below, there's no high pressure sales or intrusive questioning. You can browse around in peace. read more

Instead, they pull a few items and generalize the rest of your items as "out of style" to get out of a purchase. Don't waste your time. I came back again today to sell more clothing. I dropped off a whole bag of stuff and they took everything but two items. I sold a pair of American Eagle jeggings, an Express dress, a AE cardigan (new with tags on), an AE tank top, an Abercombie and Fitch tank and all that for $15.90. Not bad! My husband noted that this batch wear not as worn as much. I tried to look around again for a blazer. I saw a cute one up at the front but it wasn't quite the one I wanted. This store has potential but the staff is very Rude and unfashionable. The one girl with red hair was disrespectful and openly talked about customers in front of other customers. They do not have guidelines on buying back merchandise. Most of the merchandise they buy are out of date and out of style. You walk in the store and you instantly are greeted by a foul smell. The store smells used. I've been to many consignment shops which were better put together than this. Overall, my experience was horrible particularly because of that cashier. I had a good experience at this location. The staff was all very upbeat and friendly. I brought a big box of clothes and they only liked a few things but I made about $24. Around June of 2016 I was trying to make some extra money by bringing a giant storage container filled with gently used clothes I wanted to sell. I tried four times getting them to buy my clothing. First time the girl told me I had "really cute stuff" but could only offer me store credit because it was "too late in the day and couldn't buy anymore clothes for the day" it was seriously noon by this point. They recommended I come at opening time the following day, which I did. Within the first ten minutes of them opening the store they told me my clothes smelled like they had been in storage so they could not take them. I went home that day and literally went through an entire bottle of detergent washing everything. I go back the following morning at opening thinking they would definitely take a good look and like what I had. I was told within minutes of opening that they could not buy in any more clothes for the day. I left very frustrated. Two weeks later I was in the area and decided to give them a final shot. They made me wait three hours to inspect my clothing to only buy 12 things for 20 dollars out of an entire giant storage container filled with American Eagle, Hollister, PacSun, etc. Nothing was worn out but was simply the result of having way too many clothes from my shopping addiction lol. I walked out very annoyed again with a bunch of cute stuff in a storage container. That night I looked at the yelp reviews for this place and saw that a girl had recommended an app called Poshmark. A year later I have made $18k reselling used clothing from local thrift stores and is now my part time job while being in college. That app is a literal life changer for me. This obnoxious experience at Platos lead to me finding a suggestion in a review that changed my life. Plato's Closet is a great place to find brand name fashions from Abercrombie&Fitch, American Eagle and Hollister to Old Navy, L.E.I, and Chaser. They have a HUGE selection of jeans and tops. Although most of the tops are a little outdated, the majority of jeans are current style. Even if you can't find anything you like while you're there you can always stop by on your way to the mall and sell some old clothes to get some extra spending money. I myself found my favorite pair of jeans there, a dark washed skinny style from Abercrombie&Fitch. They fit perfectly and look great. The best part is they only cost me 10 dollars opposed to the 80 the would have charged me at the mall.You can always find great items in this store, but you do have to know how to look for them. read more

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE - IF YOU ARE TRYING TO SELL!! Sadly, this is a great idea that is executed badly. I've had two bad experiences trying to sell items. The first experience was about two years ago. I walked in with 2 small bags of clothes, and before I even got to the counter, the rude teenager behind the counter loudly declared that I was too late - their buying hours ended at such-n-such a time, and I would have to come back. Nice. So much for customer service. Clearly they employ the age group they sell to. I'm a mother of that age group, so that was less than endearing to me. But I'm all about second chances, so two days ago I went back. In my ONE bag, I had 4 pieces - 3 were brand new items that my almost-16 yr. old daughter never wore, still with tags; the 4th were a pair of my jeans (retailed for $110) that were of the "deconstructed" style and only worn for about 6 months. After sending me away for 45 minutes because they were "really backed up" (I witnessed two employees chit-chatting at the counter as a third told me how "backed up" they were), I was told that they would NOT be accepting the clothes. WHAT? "They're not the styles and brands we're looking for." WHAT? - they were all purchased in THOSE stores that all the kids shop in! "And there's visible wear on the items." WHAT? The tags are still on the new stuff and the jeans are deconstructed - they COME THAT WAY. "Yeah, well we're really overstocked. Why don't you try again in a few months." We gave them a nice bag of beautiful Abercrombie, AE, & Hollister clothing we have outgrown. We are young professionals who dry clean many items (check out my previous reviews) & upon arrival we were greeted kindly by the staff. We gave them our bag of clothes & decided to take a look around. We were advised 10 minutes for them to look through the entire bag. We came back roughly 15 minutes later & asked how everything was, I was told "we didn't go through your bag". When asked why not they said "we were busy & didn't have time". So we decided to give them another 10 minutes to take a look. We continued looking in the store & came back in 10 minutes like we agreed on only to be offered a small amount of money for the clothes. I of course asked why the low ball offer, I was informed "your clothes aren't high sellers". I then said I understand they are gently used, some still with tags but why the low low offer. We're talking $4 dollars for the bag people (probably 12 pairs of jeans, 10-20 shirts with assorted hoodies, ties, belts, polo's & button ups). The staff then stated "your clothes are musty sir, we don't want them now". I guess this is how Plato's closet works.....they low ball you, if you don't accept that then they treat you badly in hopes you just leave the clothes behind for them. I went to sell some clothes today (for the third time) that have been sitting in my closet with either tags still on them or have only been worn once. I was told there would be a 30 minute wait, politely agreed and waited for them to sort through my clothes. 45 minutes go by and I go up and ask them if they have gone through the clothes yet. They proceed to tell me that they can't buy a single item because the close are "too worn" and "out of style." Mind you, all of these are recent buys, never/hardly worn, and are very much in style. They were clearly busy and decided to just throw all of my stuff into another bag and tell me it was worthless. EXTREMELY unprofessional in my opinion to just make me sit there waiting (not to mention it was a 30 minute drive each way and time taken out of my work day) to tell me they wouldn't buy a single item. The first two visits I had here were not much better either. Complete rip off. They give you hardly anything for practically new, high end clothes. I love platos closet I find amazing stuff, but I never have good experiences at this location. The staff is unaware of the customers, inappropriate, & very rude. Some of the things that were said while I was there were "what if I did crack" "it's amazing everything we touch gets destroyed again" very loudly where everyone in the store could hear. I understand the staff was trying to close, I've worked in retail & I even worked at a platos closet myself while I was in college, so I understand cleaning up after customers can be frustrating but it's YOUR JOB! read more

I brought a bag of clothes to Plato's Closet today since I'm trying to get rid of my college clothes because I've outgrown their style. A lot of it was summer-season, so I understood why they rejected that because they were looking for fall merchandise. However, I waited for an hour in the store without them posting my name on the board to announce that they'd finished with my bag. I think I scanned every piece of teeny-bopper clothing in there. In that time, I found a great sweater from Banana that was a silk-cashmere blend for dirt cheap in the Men's section. I would recommend the Men's section if you're looking for something nice for your S/O because a lot of it is very gently worn. However, I noticed a bunch of shirts in the women's section that were ripped up (not to mention ugly and cheap-looking). What made me mad was not even necessarily the wait. It was because I waited for no reason. While checking out, I asked if my bag was done. She found it, and told me that it was "off season." Yes, the shorts on the top were. However, I had some great winter stuff on the bottom, much nicer than what I had seen perusing the store. When I got in the car and opened the bag, I realized that everything was in the exact same order I left it in, folded just as I had placed it. I doubt they noticed the jewelry (glass heart earrings with Swarovski crystals, mind you) or the jeans, both of which they said they were looking for. I think they looked at me and threw my bag on the floor as soon as I walked in and left it there. There was a shift change while I was there, so I really think that's what happened. And THE MUSIC. THE CLIENTELE. Ugh. I listened to the same gross song about ****es not being loyal on freaking repeat. Or one of those ones that sounds just like that one. All while trying not to punch the clearly abusive father threatening his children as they ran around the store. By the time I was checking out, the girls that I had originally handed my clothes to were gone. They were replaced (thank God) with much nicer ones. What I just don't understand is how they re-sell ripped Forever 21 shirts, but my Anna Sui one wasn't even worth reaching into the bag to find. I don't think that the girls that work here are actually educated in fashion in a traditional sense and aren't familiar with designers or fabrics. It worked for me in the end, I guess, because I got an $11 cashmere sweater, but I feel bad for whatever poor soul sold it to them for $3. Moral of the story: I'll go back in the evening, when the nice girls are there, with only winter clothes. To be fair, a co-worker that had worked there in high school told me that she hated Plato's- she thought they ripped people off and that a lot of the girls didn't know what they were even looking for. Have sold here multiple times, the wait is always long - around 2 hours. The staff is incredibly unprofessional and usually have no idea what is going on. Their selection process is very hit or miss, I think it depends on what staff member you get. The most I've ever gotten for selling is around $70, but it's usually $20-30. The last time I brought clothes in it took over two hours for them to go through my basket, they didn't take a new never worn lulus dress but did take a Target sweater from over 3 years ago... I don't get it. I also got a grimy tshirt back in my basket that was not mine. Not a fun experience but if you have to get rid of some old clothes and want fast cash then give it a try. read more

I will never visit this spot again. I don't get it!! So I went there to sell some of my clothes & check the place out. I had a few tops I never worn b4 (no tags) but by looking at these tops U can tell they LOOK brand new. The young lady at the counter looks at my tops and picks 6 out of 8 & gave me back the 2 Ralph Lauren Polos from Macy's. I asked y she says we will not b buying these at this time but gives me one of the store bins and says U can put them in here & we will donate them...LOL ARE U SERIOUS??? I THOUGHT SHE WAS JOKING one of these tops was$50 & I never even wore it, the other one I wore one time... they are too small for me bcuz I gained weight if NOT I would keep them. For 2 American Eagle, 2 Abercrombie & finch & 2 Hollister tops ..in Perfect condition! They gave me $16...That is NOT worth it to me..To drive here alone cost me $10. I will never visit here again; I will donate my own clothes to the mission like I have been doing for years...I thought this time I will sell them here & also check out what they have...Most tops looked dingy & way to worn...prices bit to high...U better off shopping at the clearance racks at the name brand stores than going here. I dropped off several (19 to be exact) name-brand items, including American Eagle and Aeropostale, which we like new. In fact, a few items had never been worn. Everything was cleaned and pressed. When I returned, the girl informed that they passed on all of the items. At first, she said that the items were considered to be 'older styles.' Much to her surprise, there was an item, exactly like I was attempting to see, right next to the register, so I showed her. It was IDENTICAL - the label was exactly the same as well as the color, style etc. She then tried to do an about-face, saying that the reason was that the items showed wear. However, she could not show me what she meant as the items were 'like new.' Moreover, the items, which I had brought in neatly folded, were just thrown back in the bag with little regard. Beyond this, I have also seen items with stains, holes (not intended), which they have the audacity to mark very high! I will NOT waste my time again at this place, and I caution everyone - both those trying to sell as well as potential shoppers - to be wary of this place!!! My son has always been voted best dressed in his class. I brought an entire bag of very gently used outgrown clothing for sale (at least 20 shirts and 5 pairs of jeans), most of which were purchased 2 doors down at Street Game for rediculously high prices. They accepted 3 shirts and 2 pair of jeans and offered a whopping $14.70 for the sale. Not only was it extremely low-balled, but it seems the choices were made by the flamboyant young man at the counter and not by trending styles They claim to know what items will be "high sellers" but apparently don't keep up with fashion trends. if you have basic items like Hollister, American Eagle, or Nike then you might get a minimal deal. But any modern Urban designs will be turned away. Go elsewhere. read more

This place is a joke. Total chaos! Unorganized! They don't have a clue. Young kids unprofessionally running a business. Lost track of what's going on. I was there on Sat 8/4/12. I brought in 4 bags of clothes. I phoned ahead and pre qualified if the clothes that I had would be what they were looking for. Once you arrive they tell you to shop in store or come back while they rifle through your clothes. My estimated time was approx 40 min..We walked through store and then decided to come back as suggested in 40 minutes. Upon our return they weren't sure if they had gone through my stuff ? So, they scrambled to find my bags...... Finally, after figuring it out, they said only 4 items were qualified (of approximately 50). I thought that was strange as I mentioned that I called ahead to be clear on this; as not to waste their time or ours. My clothes were just thrown back in my bags all wrinkled and slob like! I also realized they never went through 2 of the 4 bags I brought in?? If a zero rating was possible I would rate it just that ! Valerie read more
