I love coming here and interacting with gays from around the world. The gay village with bars, restaurants and shops is packed to the rafters in summer and during events. There is a gay beach in the center of town and clothing optional Platja dels Balmins with its crowded gay section 10 minutes walk from the church. A secluded gay nude beach, Playa del Muerto, is a good hike. Restaurants serve spectacular fresh seafood, and paella is king. Sitges is relaxing and definitely worth the 35 minute train ride (less than €6 one way) from Barcelona.

While we had been looking at flying into Barcelona, the prices and busyness of the town turned us off. Enter Sitges. The quiet simplicity of this beach town simply cannot be beat. The residents are kind, the festivals are fun (Pride Sitges was going on while we were here), and the food is so, so delicious. For a town not too far from Barcelona, the prices were so much more reasonable! And let's not forget the crowning achievement of Sitges: their beaches. Simply stunning. Cala Jovera De Tamarit is located just north of Tarragona, Spain and is hidden between Altafulla…read moreand La Móra. Jovera Cove is one of the few places that still transports us to the past of the Costa Dorada. You can get to this cove from La Móra or Tarragona in less than a half an hour and this remote location is well worth the trip! Cala Jovera's warm and calm waters, shallow sea entrance, beautiful cliffs and trees make this cove a special, unique and very pleasant exotic place. The combination of the mountain, the vegetation and crystalline water accompanied by the Tamarit castle create a postcard cove with breath-taking views! You can jump off the cliffs and enjoy some crystal clear waters! On the other side of this castle is a large sandy beach called Playa Tamarit which also offers pretty views of the Tamarit castle but I prefer the pretty exotic cliffs on the cove side over the typical beach experience that I'm accustomed to. There are no showers, bathrooms, or changing rooms anywhere near this cove. There is only a bunch of camping style resorts on the road leading up to this cove. On the beach side at Playa or Platja Tamarit there may be bathrooms and showers but I did not look for any on that side. If you're near Tarragona or La Móra in the Spanish Riviera, I highly definitely recommend visiting this cove! You'll love it!

The other is not nude but in the center of town, and seems to be turning less "gay." Platja dels Balmins is the third gay beach that is about a 10-15 minute walk from the iconic Sant Bartomeu church. It's the most fun, relaxing gay beach I've ever been to. The Mediterranean water is incredibly warm during the summer. Balmins is a nude beach with beachgoers that are not judgmental about people keeping their suitsuits on, especially puritanical Americans! The beach section closest to the main entrance with the food, toilet, shower and beach lounge rentals is a mixed crowd. Nude men, women and children freely congregate au naturel. There is an invisible line, possibly the lifeguard station, that starts the section (closer to the town) where gay men of all shapes, sizes and ages let it all hang out. Unfortunately, the town decided not to allow beach lounge and umbrella rentals in the gay section for the past few years. So bring your own, plant your umbrella and put your towel on the sand. The best part: No charge. It's free!

It's on the east side of town past the old town. It was mostly hidden by an embankment, so when we actually walked onto the beach, we noticed as we strolled on the sand that everyone was naked. As a jaybird. Sure, it was mostly guys. All shapes and sizes if you know what I mean. There were a few women, but it was pretty casual like a hippie commune except there were a lot of gold chains. THE BEST BEACH IN THE WORLD…read more -Beautiful, crystal clear water -Not overly crowded, very few tourists -Water temperature is amazingly warm -Beach remains shallow for at least 50 yards into the sea (never seen anything like it) -Small full-service bar right on the beach -Oh yeah, and topless women What more could you want? I'm not exaggerating that this was the best time I've ever had at the beach. This place is absolutely amazing, especially when compared with the other beaches in Barcelona. This elevated footpath/walkway provides excellent views over the working part of Vilanova's…read moreextensive port, especially the fishing harbour and the commercial port, and in the other direction over the beach at Sant Cristofol. It's popular with locals on a morning stroll. The path runs along the east wall of the harbour for 300m, starting at the junction of the roundabout 'Cruilla de Joan Oliver and the Passeig de Sant Cristofol, just by the bridge over course of the two seasonal rivers, the Torrent de la Pastera and the Torrent de la Piera. It is possible to climb over the low wall at the end of the path and walk further along the breakwater at your own risk (and some do): but it is not advisable. There are no railings, it has a sheer drop of some 25m onto the port road below, and technically it is the private property of the port. The bank of the torrent has been planted with shrubs, and is very attractive when these are in flower: that said, it also suffers from graffiti on the concrete walls of the water-course itself, and from occasional litter. Nevertheless, it makes for an attractive short walk, there are benches on which to sit and admire the view, and it is fascinating to watch the fishermen (they seem mostly to be men..) at work in the mornings landing their catches. You can also watch intrepid wind-surfers on the beach of Sant Cristofol as well. The continental shelf off Vilanova and Sitges is a particularly rich fishing ground, and the port is one of the leading fishing ports in Catalonia in terms of the quantity and value of the fish caught and, above all, for variety of the fish and shellfish that are brought to the fishermen's market every day.

It has everything that you can wish for in a beach. The beach is actually located along a long expanse of shoreline with a boardwalk/promenade. Along this boardwalk, you will find jungle gyms, volleyball nets, surfers, sunbathers and street vendors. And there are loads of restaurants, shops, and even casinos located along this strip too.
