The space is pretty basic and slightly chilly but wasn't very busy so it was easy to hold a conversation. There were a couple of disappointments: duck/sweet potato "kugel" would have benefitted from a bit more contrast. It was rather mushy in texture and needed something to cut through the general sweetness. The lychee 75 cocktail was overly sweet but, upon request, the addition of some club soda helped somewhat. While the pre-dining questions brought up our alpha gal concern and the fact that we were celebrating a birthday, our server didn't seem to understand the restriction (brought soup with "bacon that hadn't been braised in milk") and no birthday wishes were expressed. Honestly, that's not a big deal - we can manage our own dietary restrictions and celebrations - but why bother asking? Course timing was a bit off, but we weren't in any hurry. Water refills were slow. Overall, we do intend to return for the dinner service, so it's a definite thumbs up.

I looked everywhere to nominate Maude & the Bear for a Michelin Star restaurant to no avail. Maude & the Bear is located near downtown Staunton, in a Montgomery Ward kit house. The house was absolutely beautiful. Old mixed with new. A smart, upscale setting with hand painted murals on the walls. The staff were dressed very contemporary with jeans and white linen shirts and blouses buttoned to the top. They attended to our every need. When we arrived we were asked if we prefer still or sparkling water for the table. We chose sparkling. What a treat! And of course, we were treated with a plate of three different welcome appetizers. We had the 7 course meal and chose to have a couple of glasses of wine to pair with our meal. My two favorite courses were the Potato & Onion Ravioli, Sea Urchin, Aji Dolce and the main course of Pork, Rutabaga, and Peanuts. All of Chef Ian's courses blended in perfect harmony. The plating and culinary art expression were fabulous! I highly recommend Maude & the Bear. Book your table early or you will be disappointed!

We parked in the lot across the street although there is 2 hour street parking. Our server was friendly but it was a little disappointing that one of the drinks we wanted couldn't be ordered because it wasn't available (not sure why because it was just an old fashioned and we could clearly see the whiskey displayed behind the bar) so we ordered a different drink and the exotic mushroom pasta entree I ordered had a choice of being served with gnocchi or pappardelle pasta (which I preferred but again, it wasn't available so I went with the gnocchi). One of my friends got the beef sliders with mashed potatoes ($3 upcharge!!!) (they wanted the beef stroganoff but the chef wasn't able to make it without mushrooms) and my other friend the Brazilian beef stroganoff. The food was delicious. The ambiance was typical of a tavern with the TVs broadcasting the Olympics and the tall ceilings caused it to be a little noisy but not unbearable. We were too full for dessert but the carrot cake had been recommended so we ordered a piece to go (the biggest slice of cake I've ever seen!) along with a slice of their lemoncello cake. Good experience, I would've given them 5 stars had they not been out of so many things and unable to accommodate my friend's wish for no mushrooms

Open only 4 days a week, the menu changes each week. If you sit in the lounge or at the bar, you can do a la carte, or there are options for multi-course tasting menus where you can choose your courses for most of them. We most recently visited for our anniversary weekend, sat at the bar with Michael, and everything was just excellent. Great portions, seasoning, protein temperatures, dish compositions...you name it, we enjoyed it. I also really, really appreciate their beverage program and wine list. Their wines by the glass list is pretty extensive, and they not only feature a really good selection from around the world, but also VA wines, especially the ones they feature from their own label, made by Joy Ting. I haven't had a wine of hers I haven't liked, but we chose our own adventure this time around by choosing different wines and splitting most dishes so we could try the majority of the menu. It's a 1-2x a year place for me just because we're not local, but it's definitely worth the drive.
