Oneida Family Branch YMCA

Oneida Family Branch YMCA

I just recently started working out, trying to get into shape. A friend of mine had been going to…read morethe local YMCA for a month or two now and encouraged me to go with him. I'm definitely glad I did. The staff is fairly helpful, some more so than others. The rates for membership are greatly reduced for college students, but you can't really put a price on being able to stay healthy. There are a wide, wide variety of machines available for use - from your typical treadmill to more advanced and specialized machines. In the middle of the day, there usually isn't too many people there, but later on towards the evening it starts getting more busy. They also offer several classes, Zumba being one of them, but I haven't looked into any details. There is a full locker room with lockers, shower, toilets, and sinks for the regular visits. Out near the machines is a water fountain and scale to weigh oneself. All-in-all it is a well featured gym with plenty of ways to get and stay in shape.

Colleague recommended this Y, despite the fact it's 20 miles from where we live and work. Wanting…read moreseriously to get in shape and trim down, I said, "nothing ventured, nothing gained." The rest is history. The staff who first greeted me--Matt and Diane--are so kind, cordial, and welcoming, not to mention knowledgeable, I had to keep investigating. The facilities--although parts are over 20 years old--are in great shape. So far have only swum, taken Silver Sneakers workouts, and used sauna and steam rooms, but I am hooked. The pool is not crowded; Patty and Vera, SS instructors super good and hilarious and the other ladies and gents are welcoming and helpful too. I also see children, teens, serious muscle-builder types too there for various activities. It's a real gem in this part of CNY. Try it--but don't use the pool please. Want to keep it to myself! :- )

Teagle is by far the best Fitness Center at Cornell. It is conveniently located, has a swimming…read morepool and has two floors creating a great cultural split for working out. The top floor is dedicated to machines (cardio and isolation resistance training) and the bottom floor is dedicated to Olympic lifts, free weights, and bar weights. So naturally the top floor is friendly for people of all body types; people don't have to worry about being intimidated, judged, or having to deal with meat-head behavior (like excessive grunting). The bottom floor is where the intense (potentially aspiring) muscle men and women go, and they don't have to be bothered by people who are less intense about excercise than them. The gym does get crowded, but far less than Noyes or Helen Newman. I have never had to wait for a treadmill longer than 1 hour here. Most of the time you can sign up for a spot within 30 minutes of your arrival, so you can comfortably do a little resistance training before your cardio workout without waiting endlessly afterwards (like you have to at Noyes).

This is the largest athletic building on campus for non athletes. There is a pretty nice swimming…read morepool, a room that holds yoga and other classes, a free weight gym and a cardio / weight training equipment room. Teagle is conveniently located on campus, so students and staff can go better classes or right after class. The only negative of the building is the locker rooms. They are pretty outdated and several of the toilets and sinks are in pretty bad shape. The locker rooms could use a renovation. As far as the workout facilities though, there is a large range of equipment and plenty of space.
