My husband and I had a wedding to attend in Ironton and we ended up missing our first scheduled night at the B and B due to a delayed flight and missed connection to St. Louis. Rachel, the host, was so accommodated so kind. She gave us $50 off for missing our first night. She recommended places to visit near Ironton and surrounding areas. She made lovely breakfast! Plain and Fancy itself is a cute, adorable and quiet spot to stay. It was clean and comfortable and well-run. The grounds are gorgeous and at night you can sit and watch the fireflies and listen to the bugs and frogs. Highly recommend!! read more

a. So, based on their name you would have expected a slightly different experience. However, I still had a great time here. Please do not get me wrong. I really did enjoy my stay. But I think it would be useful to know what you're getting when you come here. I was expecting a more intimate feeling with additional interaction with other customers or at least the owners. Our cabin was a little isolated and we rarely saw the owners of the cabin. However, we had everything we needed and were well taken care of - plenty of dishes, matches, pots, pans, paper towels, etc. If you come later during the day (after four), they have a different check-in procedure than normal. But, everything is explicitly explained. Now, about the actual cabin. We stayed in the Low Water One which was perfect for six people. The rooms were extremely large and the kitchen had all the amenities you could possibly hope for while trying to "rough it" outdoors. Okay, yeah I get it. Staying in a cabin isn't quite roughing it for most people, but for this city girl, the hiking was quite a bit. There was a large living room for dining and a gorgeous patio. Unfortunately, we couldn't make use out of the patio because it was a bit cold, but this was definitely a great place to stay. If you'll be near Arcadia, I highly recommend this place. Also, if you're looking for some place to eat nearby, there aren't too many options, but Baylee Jo's is one I would recommend. read more

We greatly enjoyed and beautiful, warm, inviting Scarlet Suite for our Anniversary. Soon after arrival, Rachel's sweet boys brought us our meat and cheese and fruit and chocolate trays. A bouquet of flowers was already in the room. The settee with big, fluffy, furry white throw in front of the easy, wood fireplace were so cozy with my honey! We used the giant jacuzzi at least twice in one day. We were pleased that they didn't have a lot restrictions on it's use, such as types of additives used. There was satellite on the tv and a thick foam mattress-topper on the beautifully-dressed bed. Breakfast was so good! Even the fruit compote was well-balanced with sweet and tart flavors. There were powdered-sugar-dusted and whipped-cream-topped Dutch Babies. Wow! So delicious! Thank you, Rachel and your sweet children who did the bussing for us! We spent last weekend at Plain & Fancy, and I cannot say enough great things about this B&B. The Scarlett Hideaway was intimate and peaceful, and offered us a weekend getaway that rivals any suite in any hotel in this country (trust me... I know). The breakfasts were both delicious, and were made even more so by our pleasant conversation with the owner Rachel, while she served us. As a hospitality consultant, I consider myself a bit of an expert on these things, and if I could bottle up the hospitality we received last weekend I would be rich. If you are looking for a weekend jaunt, you can do no better than Plain & Fancy. We cant wait to go in the winter and sit by the fire... the logs are there just waiting to be lit. We enjoyed our time here tremendously! We stayed in the Scarlett Hideaway and can't recommend it enough. Ruth the owner was friendly and helpful. The jacuzzi tub was a delight, as was the large double shower. Nothing better than curling up on the loveseat in front of the wood burning fireplace. The bed was firm, which is not our standard, but was well maintained. We took advantage of the trail ride you can book from the inn. It was a lot of fun. And the breakfasts...simply awesome, each and every one!!! read more

Absolutely a wonderful way to spend the start of or honeymoon! Ruth is kind and her dog chowder is so cute! The breakfast was out of the world. We stayed in Scarlets Hideaway which was perfect because it has a nice walkway down to the gazebo and hot tub. We had wine in the hot tub and gazed at the beautiful stars. We originally had scheduled a horse back trial ride, but I got a cold and had to cancel. She was wonderful to work with and does what she can to accommodate what you need/want. Great accommodations in a beautiful, peaceful area surrounded by lots of fun outdoor activities! Our hostess, Rachel, and her family are wonderful people. My wife and I stayed in the Scarlet suite --- very private, close to outdoor hot tub, spacious, with own fireplace. Very clean. Delicious home-made breakfasts. Easy drives to Taum Sauk Mountain, Elephant Rocks, and Johnson Shut-Ins. Great places to eat out nearby and very friendly people in this community. Highly recommend! read more

My husband and I have never stayed at a bed and breakfast before. I scheduled a one night stay at this B&B in the Scarlet's Hideaway room as a little getaway from St. Louis. We planned to go to Elephant Rock and Johnson's Shut-Ins where I had not been in years. I would love to give this B&B 5/5 due to the awesome grounds that it is situated on, but the weird service and comments made to us kind of threw us off. When we arrived we did not know exactly where to go to check in, so we rang the front doorbell and a woman opened the door. We said "We're not really sure where to go to check in", she replied "I'm not sure either". This lead me to believe that she was another guest in the house, but no, it turned out she was the owner. She then proceeded to open the door and tell us to come in. She got our paperwork and showed us around. We were staying in the room that had a private back entrance, she went on to say that "I am crabby" and to "make sure you do not lock your room key in the room" and she would be "especially crabby at 2 AM, when you can't get into your room." Now, all this would have been fine if she had said it in a joking manner, it was NOT a joke. The last weird comment was when we were asked what time we would like breakfast, we choose 8:30, she said "see you at 8:30, or probably before with breakfast".. Umm, ok?? You asked what time we wanted breakfast, why even ask if you are going to pick for us. My husband and I kept looking at each other like "is this for real". After that we had a great time together. In the morning we were served breakfast, the male owner was super friendly, and told us good morning, while the female owner was still standoff-ish and not friendly. The food was good, banana split french toast, with mimosas (I paid extra to be served in our room). The romance package that I had picked included wine and cheese on arrival, and breakfast served in our room for an extra $100. The grounds are gorgeous!! nicely landscaped, a pool (which we did not use) and a hot tub (which we did, which was a little questionable, murky and smelled a tad weird but we got in anyway). There was a creek that we could have walked through, and a pretty lake to walk around. Our bed was big, but VERY hard, and our room had a Jacuzzi tub that we did not use, and a huge shower that we did. So, to recap, if you're not too concerned with the owner making semi strange comments you'll like staying here. The grounds are AWESOME!! I would be willing to go back due to the beauty of the grounds, and I am now prepared for the strange comments. The place is a little pricey, but it is a getaway, and you have to be willing to spend a little. read more

My husband and I just stayed here for four days for our honeymoon and it was fantastic. We stayed in Scarlett's room and it was beautiful. Ruth, the owner, was fabulous and had fresh logs for our fire and room cleaned everyday. We did a romantic hot tub where she brought us wine for three of the nights. We had dinner at the inn twice and we both agreed it was the best food we had our whole trip and highly recommend eating there. Our favorite part was the horseback riding where we did a two hour trail and the trail guide was very friendly and helpful considering we'd never ridden a horse before. I highly recommend a stay here and we both plan on going back yearly! read more

We stayed at Scarlett's Hideaway on May 15-17 2015. We arrived about 3:00 in the afternoon. No one was there. After about 15 minutes a maid showed up. She phoned Ruth the manager. We had to wait another 20 minutes to check in. The room was nice. The hot tub right outside our room was a joke. Way too hot to use and no way to turn it down. On the second day Ruth told us to uncover it and it would cool down. After 3 hours still to hot to use. The breakfast was ok if your into sweets. When our room was cleaned the dog must lie on the sofa. Dog hair all over. We checked out a day early and even though they had no other reservations in the whole bed and breakfast , we got charged for checking out early with another nights charge. We showed up late in the day, keys in mailbox for a cute little cottage on property of Bed and Breakfast main home. Arrived in room to a smell stuffy and warm room. Didn't think to much about it, for thought maybe it had been closed up with air off for awhile. ( we are in the middle of no where in Missouri) We went to adjust A/C and found it set for 74 but it was 80 degrees. We felt little to no airflow coming from the vents. My husband then went and found filter and it was plugged solid, filthy. With his trade being A/C, he removed the filter and set the unit to defrost. He said we have a few hours til we can turn unit back on, lets go get something to eat. We left for 2 hours and returned now after dark. Turned unit back on, cooling good. Showered, everything clean but smell is a definite turn off. Through the night the smell seemed to get worse in bedroom. The next morning, we awoke with sore throats. Our plans were to hit area State parks that day of hiking and swimming. We went to breakfast with our stuff for the day in tow. During breakfast, we are feeling insecure that we smell. Our clothes had absorbed the smell. Disgusted at that point, we called inn keeper in hopes we could move to another room. No answer. I sent her a email, no reply. We went back to house, we knocked on door of front B&B door locked, no answer. We packed up our stuff with no idea of where we were going to sleep that night and continued on our way. Our phone service was really bad so I continued to email her through the day. 4 times with no reply. Only had 3 days with our son and wasn't going to let it ruin our trip. We still have gotten no response from her and now letting credit card company decide whether or not we are on the hook for $150. per night stay in a litter box. read more

We are a family of 5 from a suburb of Chicago, IL who decided to spend our Spring Break in and around the St. Louis area. We had spent the entire day in downtown St. Louis before heading to our cabin. We arrived around 7pm and followed the instructions on our confirmation stating that the key to our cabin would be in the black mailbox along with additional information. Well to our dismay there was nothing in the mailbox waiting for us. We tried calling both phone numbers I had and no one answered. We then thought maybe our instructions were wrong and drove down to our cabin to only find the door locked. At this point I was completely frustrated and wonder what we were going to do for the evening if we were unable to get into the cabin we had already paid for. We thankfully ran into a nice older couple who helped us. We drove back to the Plain & Fancy Bed & Breakfast and just as we drove up a women was walking out of the back of the house. The older women told her that we rented out one of the cabins and needed our key. The women then just laughed and said "oh I must have forgot to put the key and information in the mailbox". NEVER apologized just walked in the house and over to her computer. It took several minutes to print out our instructions and hand us our key. She did not explain anything just expressed how tired she was and rushed me out the door. We stayed in the Low Water Cabin which was a nice size for our family. The master bedroom was nice with its own bathroom however the queen bed in this room must be well over 10 years old. It was very uncomfortable and very squeaky so every time you rolled over you woke yourself up. NOTE TO OWNER: Buy a new bed for this room! I also bought a Junior Pony ride for my 10 year old daughter who loves horse that she never got to take. The people who own the stables contacted us the 2nd day we were there and asked when we would like to schedule this and I called them back at 2pm and told them we would be around the rest of the day and that we would like to do it that day when ever it was convenient for them. They never came nor contacted me about this therefore my daughter never got her pony ride I paid for. Very disappointing. We have stayed at many cabins around the U.S. and this by far was the worst experience we have ever had. read more

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. This bed and "breakfast" is a rip off and full of false advertising. We arrived at Plain & Fancy and had no idea where to go to check in initially, the front door was locked, we rang the doorbell and no one came. We did, however, find a mailbox with an envelope with our name on it. It gave us instructions and we found our cabin, which was a little off and secluded from the rest of the grounds. First, we got into the room and realized quickly that one of our bedrooms has two twin size beds, which is odd, but not the end of the world. Second, we called to check in on what time breakfast was and where the pool and hot tub was (only because there was 0 interaction at check-in and there's no information in the room). We were told we actually weren't part of the bed and breakfast so we weren't able to get breakfast and we were only allowed to use the hot tub the first night because they were fully booked the next two nights so we weren't allowed to use it. This makes no sense we thought. COMPLETELY FALSE ADVERTISING! It's absolutely ridiculous. Apparently, the ONE cabin that we stayed in isn't actually a part of the bed and breakfast, except you book it through them. We called the owner and she literally told us that there was nothing they could do. Lastly, we were told that all the rooms had internet and the internet DIDN'T WORK. So, we asked if we could stay just tonight and get a refund for the other three, NOPE. This place is ripping people off!!! read more
