We had the Mero (grouper)with seafood sauce. The fish was so fresh. The sauce was light and flavorful with clams and shrimp - lovely potatoes accompanied. Also had the sea bass which was excellent. Desserts - flan, cheesecake, apple tart a la mode, and the best torta de Santiago (almond cake). It was the restaurants version of this typical regional cake. I was honored to meet Dory who was the person responsible for this delectable sweet! The owner of this family owned establishment, Alfred, was charming and could not have been more accommodating.

The menu includes several pasta varieties (lasagne, gnochi, spaghetti), salads and some meat dishes. This branch also has a salad bar where you can make you own salad using the ingredients available. I have to highlight from the starters the garlic bread that is very tasty and the provolone cheese with spices that is very yummy. I usually order as a main the Cambalaches gnochi that are really good with perfect flavour. The restaurant has two separate areas: one for smokers and the other for non-smokers. The prices are very reasonable, a meal for two can bee around 40 Euro.

Delightfully fresh and flavorful Galician seafood at a higher price range…read more My friend and I were visiting A Coruña for the weekend and set on a mission in search for centolla (spider crab). We looked around for the best seafood spots and found La Sarten. Although we made the reservation the morning of, we luckily snagged a table at 2pm. We got to the restaurant early, but they sat us at a table anyway. The interior of the restaurant is compact, with probably less than 20+ table seats and a handful of bar seats. Immediately we noticed that the restaurant was frequented by locals. The bartender and waiters chatted with the guests like old friends, and treated us with similar cordiality. The décor was hip and modern. Clearly the manager emphasized presentation, but how about the food? We ordered a glass of albariño (Galician white) and a (beer with lemonade) and eager inquired about the spider crabs. "No, it was unavailable." "Why not? Isn't it September the season?" "Regretfully you are just a week or two early this year." We were devastated. We had ourselves all worked up about spider crabs, researched everything about centolla dishes, only to miss it by a week. Crestfallen, we ordered two dishes recommended by our waiter in lieu. = Food = Almeja babosa a la marinera (€20): Venus clams sautéed with sailor's sauce. Loved it. The fresh plump clams were enveloped in a sauce bursting with flavor from albariño wine, garlic, tomatoes, onions, and saffron. Large portion size justifies the price. Arroz con bogavante (€28 per person, two minimum): Rice with lobster. A Galician take on Valencian paella, this sumptuous dish is choke full of lobster meat. Perhaps the best dish we had on this trip. The rice was perfectly cooked, intensely flavored by the seafood broth and saffron. Comes served in a big saucepan that keeps the dish hot while you work through it. Warning - it is a lot of food, and you will not be able to resist finishing all of it. = Verdict = While we did not find cebolla, we had an amazing, coma-inducing gastronomic experience. I highly recommend this restaurant for those who love shellfish. I would definitely come back, and hopefully in time for cebolla season!

Melt-in-your-mouth Octopus…read more This place is so good we went back the next time we were in A Coruña. It's also easy to get to - just a couple of short blocks from the main square (the one with the Obelisk). I have never had Octopus so tender and flavorful. The generous portion comes with potatoes, crusty bread and a starter for 20 Euros. Also enjoyed a couple of glasses of Estrella beer - so refreshing. Also recommend the Scallops and the Prawns. The staff is welcoming and attentive. If you have never tried Octopus, get out of you safety zone and give it a go - I'm betting you will be glad you did.

After spending four hours touring A Coruña and soaking in all its historical charm, we found…read moreourselves absolutely starving at 12:00 PM. The tour had mentioned that octopus is one of the most beloved dishes in A Coruña, so I knew I had to try it. But where? I turned to Yelp and searched for the best octopus nearby. My answer appeared almost immediately, A Taberna de Cunqueiro, just a five-minute walk through the enchanting old town, boasting nearly a 5-star rating with 37 reviews. When we arrived, the place was packed, buzzing with locals and tourists alike. Just as I was scanning the room, probably looking a bit lost, a friendly waitress caught my eye. With a big smile and a cheerful "hola," she seated us right away. She went above and beyond, recommending the best tapas selections to start, and before we even had a chance to order, she brought over a warm bowl of potaje and jamón ham con pan--such a thoughtful touch! We ordered two refreshing local draft beers, Estrella de Galicia, and dug into the delicious appetizers. The casa croquettes, Iberian ham, small scallops, and of course, the Galician octopus, were all simply amazing. Each bite was a true taste of Galicia's culinary brilliance. After a second round of beers, we were so stuffed that we had to call it a day just as they were preparing to close at 2:00 PM for their lunch break. This spot has an amazing vibe and you can tell it's one of the locals favorite as it reas full of young people adding to the energy. This place quickly became one of my favorite while in A Coruña and merits multiple visits. Did I also mention that owner was in the kitchen making sure this packed place functioned like a well oiled machine. The vibe is so authentic, the staff are incredibly friendly, and the food? Unforgettable. I couldn't even imagine giving anything short of 5 star review definitely be back next time I'm in town!

I had the shrimp and beans in a garlic sauce - very nice- and wife had the guacamole with sardines(also very nice). For the main I had the squid - generous portion not over cooked but tasted off (a bit like charcoal, bu that isn't quite it) and wife had the "secret pork". Stay away unless you like back fat! The desserts were carrot cake (more like carrot bread) with cream and mini Oreos (tasty) and I had strawberry mousse (also very good). While the staff spoke little English and I speak little Spanish, we made it work via google translate. We didn't understand that we could have ordered tapas instead of the set menu - seemed others enjoyed their tapas - so that would be the way to go, if you go.
