Pizza Express at The Dome in Doncaster is located right near the VUE cinema. A short walk away from Doncaster Racecourse, making it an option to consider when looking to dine in Doncaster, whether you're in the town centre, visiting the cinema, staying at the nearby Hilton Garden Inn, or attending an event at the races.
This was my second choice for food this evening, I ended up getting a table here after getting turned away at the nearby Nando's, which only gave me the option of waiting outside in the rain for a table, and this place had a couple of tables spare for a Saturday dinner service. I was just pleased to get somewhere indoors where I could get food.
The interior is fine, but I much prefer their newly refurbished locations which they appear to slowly be rolling out across the country.
PRO TIP: Be sure to take advantage of their Pizza Express Club loyalty scheme on their app, after just a couple of visits you can get a bunch of freebies to make your trip more affordable. Without these offers, it can be a little pricey however once you unlock the gold tier you're able to get bonuses such as a free soft drink, bottled water, dough balls, coffee and Dolcetti and the list continues.
I did have an issue using the app on this occasion, as the app would not recognise being inside the restaurant using the phone of the other member of my party, a waiter in the restaurant helped to assist us. I think a way to fix this would be changing the GPS requirement to check-in via the app, as even when my guest was connected to the WiFi it wouldn't budge until she did a Google Maps update.
They were reasonably busy as expected, but the staff were friendly enough, and they offered to make me one of my favourite pizzas on the menu despite being recently removed, I ordered the gluten-free Pollo Forza, just substituting the roquito peppers for the jalapenos. I also ordered a side of gluten-free dough balls, with my Pizza Express rewards, all to be served simultaneously.
I was a little disappointed with the quality of my food, my pizza looked like it had just been thrown together quickly without much care and thought, while it tasted fine, it didn't meet the usual high Pizza Express standards set by other locations. I also found the bell peppers to be cut far too thick, which certainly was not suitable for a pizza, and I had to take them all off. It looked like something you'd give to a child.
The dough balls were fine, but again they were very dry, and the portion of garlic butter given was inadequate and didn't even fill half of the little pot.
I ordered a Latte and GF Brownie to finish, this was presented quite well.
3* - Pretty standard chain Italian, very good value for money with the rewards system (when it worked), friendly and helpful staff but food quality OK at best. I probably wouldn't return to this location if it wasn't for being denied entry to a nearby restaurant as was the situation on my most recent visit. read more
