For me, any restaurant inside a shopping complex, even one as glam as Victoria Square, is for family teas or quick meals before the cinema rather than a proper night out. Just to be clear, a 'proper' night out must include drinks at home to start, then pre-dinner drinks in a suitably fabulous bar and then dinner in a glam restaurant. Drinks, drinks and then food with drinks. OK, then. So, Pizza Express in Victoria Square, under the law of the Proper Night Out, is a family and/or pre cinema venue only. And for those times, it's pretty good. Everyone is a fan of the famous dough balls and you won't be disappointed here - warm, soft and garlic buttery. Yum. Pizzas are also as good as you would expect and the American Hot on a thin thin crispy base is delish. Even my notoriously fussy kids describe the kids margarita as 'awesome'. I think the kids menu is worth a mention for the value for money - dough balls, pizza, salad and desert for £6, plus a strange kids coffee with no coffee which is always treated with disdain at our table. It's location one floor down from the cinema and one floor above the shops makes this Pizza Express perfect for a quick bite to eat.

The staff are the saving grace of this place. Hence the three stars and not less. For a pizza place the pizza is not good. For started the menu doesn't even say what size of pizza you will be getting. We got one with egg that was very dry with not too much topping and lacked flavour. The other had artichoke on it and was better with more flavour and moisture. However,it had stuff on it that was not on the menu. It was also smaller in size. Heard the staff apologising to customers on numerous occasions about not having certain ingredients and also takins complaints from customer. We found out when paying that the chef had called in sick and the 2 chefs on where both apprentices. The manager was also chained to the kitchen. Would never go here for pizza as there are so many more better options in Belfast.

Isn't pizza express just amazing. It really does feel like fine dining when you go into one of these restaurants. This Victoria square branch entirely lives up to my estimations in price, quality and overall experience. Pizza express regularly have promotions and discounts which really does make me visit their restaurant constantly. I can't stress how good value their two for one offers are. They also partner with Orange Wednesdays 241 cinema deals, which means you can have two for one pizza and movie for...well I'm not sure...but its not that much!!! My favourite pizza is either their Diavola for the spice kings out there or a nice and simple Il padrino (chicken & sweet peppers). Also try out their 14 inch skinny base versions of the classics. My only negative point is the price of their drinks as they are expensive in comparison to the food. But it doesn't put me off that much.

Great service, price for food is reasonable although I don't agree to paying £2.50 for a 330ml bottle (same volume as a can) is outrageous!

Food was OK. We got salad that was out for a long time and was brown. Tables were greasy. We wondered what the kitchen will look like

It occupies the prime spot out of all the restaurants in Vic Square, the iconic glass corner tower ( ex Chiquito). Tony Macaroni is a large Scottish (Glasgow) chain of "Real Italian Food" run by Sep Marini. This is the second one in Northern Ireland (after Bangor). I brought my daughter as my plus one, a welcome distraction from AQE preparations!! She was so thrilled and excited as it was a surprise for her. The interior has all been totally refurbished with the main features being the bar and the open kitchen. On arrival we were very warmly met and seated by the Manageress. There was Prosecco on arrival but I opted for the sparkling water and Fanta for my daughter. The menu was very extensive, with lots of mouth watering, Italian named dishes and my daughter immediately spotted the calamari whilst I opted for the Gamberoni (prawns). After a few minutes our dishes arrived and looked incredible. They were big portions!! The squid was juicy and perfectly cooked and the garlic mayo and sweet chilli sauce accompanied them well, whilst the prawns were subtly flavoured with lemon, garlic and white wine and served with sticky rice. It didn't take us long to finish!! Spaghetti carbonara is a firm favourite for my two daughters and for me I love calzone, so I ordered the Americana and my daughter insisted on chips (I tried to dissuade her as I suspected the portions would be large). When the dishes arrived I was certainly right about the big portion sizes!! The carbonara was excellent (my daughters honest opinion!!) and I must say did taste excellent!! The chips were big fat fellows. My calzone was a bit plump round the edges but bursting with filling- the sausage, bacon and ham bursting out along with the tomato, cheese and onion and was tremendous! Alas bellies beat our eyes and we had to stop and leave room for desert!! We asked for the rest to be packed (so no 2 daughter wouldn't feel left out!!). For sweets my daughter chose the white chocolate sundae whilst I was recommended the toffee tablet cheesecake. When they arrived my daughters eyes lit up!! She immediately went to work, like a busy beaver, deconstructing it, peeling back the layers of cone, mint, cream, raspberries, vanilla and strawberry ice cream until the treasure of white chocolate was unearthed at the bottom. Meanwhile my toffee tablet cheesecake, topped with raspberries and blackberries and served with a pot of cream was equally indulgent. "Tablet" I hear you say, it's not medicinal but is what our Scots friends call butterscotch fudge. There were nice chunks on and in the creamy toffee cheesecake. The biscuit base was quite thin and the addition of the pot of cream was maybe too much!! This was all washed down with a cappuccino and hot chocolate. Well we could hardly move after all that!! The food was excellent and service was slick. We were given a nice gift bag containing a glass and bottle of Prosecco (for the wife of course!!) as well as the remains of the spaghetti and pizza (for no 2 daughter). I shall definitely be back with the rest of the family as there are a few dishes I want to try and I love the Presto menu for £5.95 (£6.95 on Sunday) and the breakfasts and the "Go Jimmy style" of having pizza/pasta half/half, a great way to share.

Barking Dog Restaurant - beef shin burger is definitely not your average burger

I've had my fair share of memorable burgers from coast to coast in America, but just glancing at a picture of the beef shin burger transports me back across the pond to the Barking Dog. I remember the few days I spent in Belfast fondly and of the many memories, my meal at the Barking Dog was a definite highlight. In a rather quaint and charming neighborhood, I took a nice short stroll from my Airbnb and came across this gem of an establishment and decided I had to check it out. I had a nice beer to start, and it wasn't a Guinness because stouts aren't my thing, but whatever it was I remember it being excellent and local. Undoubtedly you could make this place a regular haunt and there is no shortage of drinks and food options to make this a go-to for a date, celebration, or a quick meal. The staff are welcoming, kind, and helpful and the general atmosphere is chill. The food for me was ethereal - a burger isn't just a burger here and what you get when you bite into the beef shin burger is a little slice of Heaven. Moist and tender are a given but the taste is just so divine with the caramelized onion, cheddar, and horseradish mayo melding into an union of perfection. It's hard not to describe one of the most memorable meals of my life in such hyperbole but the vivid recall I have of this particular place is uncanny and merits all the praise I can heap upon the fine folks that run the place. If timing had worked out, I would have eaten as meals here as I could have but I'll thank my lucky stars for at least giving me one opportunity to eat such a wonderful burger at such a wonderful eatery. A+ and a definite must when visiting Belfast.
