There are similar programs in different parts of the Metro area, so do begin at the OFB site and search by ZIP Code. Great places to Volunteer, if u can follow safety rules, and r low risk for bringing in a virus. I actually went online and got a Food Handlers Card to be more helpful as a Volunteer at our NoPo Food Share. This site is on #4 bus, has off-street parking, is multi-ethnic and LG Bi Trans friendly.

I've learned so much about them in the past week it makes me smile on the inside and out... community work in the LGBTQ world that really really changes life. Saturday night I was at their benefit at the Nines Hotel, and I got a peek into what they are doing for our Portland Queer community. One stuck out to me, and I'll just have to quote it: "Q Center has held a 'high school' prom in the past for those people who were not able to attend with the person they cared about." Just so you understand- this means back in the 60s and 70s when there wasn't as much freedom. The image of these freed individuals dancing to classics and smiling, finally, brings a smile to my face. No matter your orientation, beliefs or political standpoint- everyone can agree that seeing a room of love can only be beautiful. The staff at Q Center only brings this flow of love, and the patrons who represent and support them return it with a big smile. They offer everything from abuse resources, to transsexual support, to a person first coming out. They also stand for the women and have a very strong back bone in the feminist community. I love Q Center.

David and Tina are incredible, they've taken the time to train me, support me, and make sure I always feel like I belong. Their energy sets the tone for the whole place. warm, inviting, and real.What makes this spot so special is the community. The people who come in, especially the regulars, are some of the most engaging individuals I've ever met. They care what your name is. What your days been like, They REMEMBER. these things. Being here has given me a sense of purpose and connection, especially within the recovery community, that I didn't even realize I was missing, it's a place where people show up for each other, and most importantly themselves. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone, for an especially meaningful way to connect with your community. If it's not your cup of tea? Then grab a cup of coffee.

The internal workings of seeing a provider, seeing a specialist, communicating with your provider and not some random person in their system, getting tests ordered ... it's all a massive mess. You never know whom you're getting care from and if it will be in any way decent. There's no way to meaningfully ask your provider for help. And everything--any task at all from the most profoundly medical to the most simply administrative--takes an obscene amount of time, that would be comical in a dark nihilist way if it wasn't your health on the line. Go anywhere else for your medical care. ANYWHERE.

McDonald's was a proud volunteer today, helping to package food items. Today, we sorted and repacked pancake mix to go out to various organizations. You also have to label the items with nutritional information as well as a cooking label. What's good is that anyone can volunteer to share your time by working with them. Only requirement is that you're 16 years of age with an adult or 18 years or older. So come by yourself as Devon did or come as a group. It is a great way to give back to the community. They also give tours so you can truly understand the impact hunger has on the community, the state. I truly was blessed by this event.

I was denied the opportunity to donate blood because my pulse was high. I was having anxiety about…read morethe experience. After the first person took my pulse I was told they would take it again in 5-10mins. It felt like 3 minutes. Had they waited a bit longer, my pulse would have gone down because the anxiety was lessening. I can feel it physically when my anxiety is high and I can feel it going away. With the need for donors, I would think they would have waited to check because they could have gotten a donation from me. The staff were nice but I don't think they really cared for me to donate blood. I rescheduled the appointment but not sure I will ever donate blood again as this experience was off putting. With rising prices, I not only wasted time, but gas too.

But once you do, expect to start receiving the constant texts and calls from unknown numbers lol. After all these years, Red Cross still has not updated their systems. I think experienced donors know how I feel. But onto the subject of this place: ~ Its a fairly big facility with an open quad area. Blood donations in the front. Blood platelets and plasma in the back, in an enclosed glass section. ~ What's also great about this place is the staff. I've always ran into the elderly ladies at check-in that are smiling and helpful. The technicians I've ran into have ranged from normal yet talkative, to near-zombie-like and anti- social. ~ The preparation area and equipment used for platelet/plasma donation is quite clean. I've seen technicians wipe things down, and bring in new sealed kits. Its definitely different when donating platelets. Overall, this location does an excellent job in getting donors set up and checked-in properly. The bed, or gurney, used are clean as is the equipment. I'll likely return six months from now for another donation. But I bet I'll receive over 20-30 calls/text from RC before then.
