My daughter and I were in Pittsburgh from Texas for the Eric Clapton concert and had some time to kill. We rolled into Pittsburgh Guitars and were met by the absolute nicest staff. Anything we wanted to play was pulled down off the rack for me and tuned on the spot. The store itself is pretty small but organized really well and had several options of everything that we were looking for. I convinced my husband to finally get himself a new bass guitar and found this place. I'm so glad we actually took the time to find this shop. If my husband ever needs another guitar or to have one of his repaired I'm definitely coming back here from now on. All the people who work there are so friendly, down to earth and knowledgeable. Sometimes when you go to places like this you get that small comic book store treatment (think Comic Book Guy from The Simpson's) - which I experience going into a lot of comic stores - but everyone here is so cool and helpful. I took bass lessons here from fifteen until sixteen - it was unbelievable. I would come unprepared every single time, and then the teacher would either kindly walk me through a mode or song I was supposed to learn, teaching me on the spot (rather than just sitting baffled that a teenager didn't do their homework for their auxiliary skills), or ask me about the music that I liked and then demonstrate to me how to pick it up by ear, teaching himself the bassline (and by proxy, me how to do what he was doing - playing by ear, feeling out the key and mode quickly and then working out specific intervals). I didn't fully appreciate this until I was seventeen and realized I knew way more out of just that - the basics, that is; modes, keys, and playing by ear - than most other young musicians, but also had a kind of courage, so that when I was asked after my first band's third show to step on stage and solo over a stranger's band, I could step up to the plate and deliver. I'm now in my late 20's and consider myself an amateur music theorist and a very comfortable player of the strings (violin, guitar, bass). I've been in several bands and continue to love understanding and practicing music theory and design. Every single person who works here has multiple pillars of character - derived from interactions with music theory, with culture, with design, with education, and with the hardware - in addition to being just generally nice and cool people. I have bought several instruments from the place - my rickenbacker bass was restored in house before I bought it and it is the most superb feeling and sounding bass I have ever played. Every member of my family has an instrument from this place. Every member of my band has an instrument from this place. Bottom line: these guys are nice, friendly, and know their stuff. I have been playing guitar for quite a few years, and have a few (Martin, a couple Fenders, etc.) and have gotten to the point where I now have kids who are interested in playing. My daughter (11) had saved up around $100 from a combination of birthdays, Christmas and busking (fiddle), and wanted to buy a mandolin. We made several browsing trips to Pittsburgh Guitars before stopping by one day when there were two mandolins that she really liked. (though there were a few more that were out of the price range!) Besides our other trips from before, on that trip, the two guys working spent about an hour and a half with us, showing her how to tune, playing it for her so she could hear it, answering all her questions, and just being generally nice and conversational. Even though we weren't spending that much, they took a lot of time to help us out and were super considerate and friendly. All their instruments, even the more "budget" ones, were set up by an instrument tech, and had new strings on them. They were so excited about her interest in music and very complimentary about a kid wanting to play mandolin in general, it just made the whole event really special for her. read more

What a great place for guitar players. About two years ago, and after much research, I purchase my Rickenbacker Bass here. The price was better here than anywhere I could find online. I've been playing bass recreationally for quite some time but the basses I've played have always been of the electric variety. I recently acquired an acoustic bass and wanted to change the strings. I walked into this place not knowing that there's a difference between acoustic and electric strings... I'm glad that I asked. Without belittling my ignorance or making me feel inferior they happily explained the difference and made sure that I walked out with the right strings. Knowledgable staff; should have PhD's in guitar playing, maintenance, and trivia! High quality new and used instruments, and timely repairs. If you buy a used guitar from this store, you may not always be able to sell in back. I had this issue but the owner followed up with me to discuss why it wasn't purchased or accepted as a trade. While the outcome wasn't as I had hoped, the customer service was exceptional. The guitar was eventually sold to another interested party so everything worked out. This is just a great store. Everyone in there knows the equipment they are selling, and have good recommendations on everything. No pressure to buy something you don't need, they listen to what you do and make reccomendations. The service on instruments here is also out of this world. Dropped in at lunch to have a button put on my uke and walked out 15 minutes later with the button installed and a cool uke strap. The charge for the button and labor was only $2! The staff were super-friendly and didn't make me feel awkward as beginner musician. read more

I've shopped at Pittsburgh Guitars for years and decided to give them a review. Every time I walk thru the door I'm greeted with a smile. It doesn't matter if I'm serious about buying anything or just looking around I still feel like a valued customer. I had my eye on a '52 reissue Telecaster and they were upfront and honest and told me bridge had been replaced. They said they'd back me up if I ever went to sell it and sure enough they wrote me a confirmation email when I went to sell the guitar years later. I have taken quite a few guitars to get fixed here. They do great work. The turn around time is quick. They are honest people and will let you know if it may take longer to get things repaired. They even have text service to let you know your repairs are done. They have a great laid back attitude and are happy to help unlike Guitar Center employees. Absolutely love this shop. So much so that I signed up for this website for the sole purpose of writing this review lol I stopped in yesterday to grab some lemon oil for an acoustic I'm trying to restore a bit. They happened to be out at the time, however, it wasn't a simple "no". Literally all 3 people working took a minute out of their time to check around the shop to really be sure they were out of stock, personally apologized to me and gave me a time when I can come back to pick it up. There's really nothing that matches the feeling of going into a small shop and not only is the staff friendly and says hello when you pass them on the street, but you can tell they really take their customers satisfaction very seriously. A couple of the fellas even gave me some good tips on cleaning frets,alternate methods that I personally never tried. After following their instruction the frets really turned out great! I would HIGHLY recommend this shop to any seasoned musician or someone just starting out. Anyone could walk in and learn something from the knowledge of the staff. To sum it all up, great people and great guitars, to me it doesn't get much better than that :) WILL BE RETURNING! read more

Called for a bone nut blank for a jazz bass and asked the gentleman specifically for a cattle bone nut. He said they had a few of them. I went to the store and the same gentleman i spoke to on the phone showed me the packages and i grabbed two nuts for 16 bucks after inquiring whether or not they were bone and the gentleman reassured me they were. got home and opened the package and started sanding and i smelled burning plastic and my was smelling like it was melting and looking like it was too. Bone does not smell like burning plastic. it smells like bone dust or dentist office smell when they file your teeth. i called to return the nuts and the same gentleman said that would be fine but then when i went back to the store i was told i could not return the clearly wrong material nuts if they were opened. i was confused because i was initially told i could return the nuts. i just politely left and i dont plan on ever going back. i know its just 16 bucks but its the principle of the matter. i have been going there frequently for the last 5 years but felt a little insulted and taken advantage of. looks like guitar center just got another customer. read more
