Pretty darn good for West coast Ex New Yorker who lives in a bagel desert here in CA. Visited some friends and thought Pipsqueaks looked like a place to try. Glad they didn't disappoint. Really lovely counter people! Friendly and Helpful. I tried 3 different flavors - everything, parm/black pepper and rosemary sea salt. The texture, volume and size (including hole size iykyk) was spot on. The only reason for the 4 was the savoriness of the dough wasn't quite there. Def something that's hard to pinpoint. Thank you guys! read more

These might just be the best bagels in town! I'd been dying to try these, but wanted to wait until the hype died down a bit. We stopped in on a Sunday and thankfully the line was super short. I went with the fruit and cream because I love jam on top of cream cheese and this was divine! I had mine on a salt bagel, which wasn't too salty at all, in fact it added the perfect amount. The apricot jam was incredible, no notes. My family got the Everything Bagels and did wish that they had more salt. These bagels did have the perfect crispy crust with a soft chewy interior. They also have a little parking lot! A true unicorn in Portland! We will definitely be back. read more

This place is SOOO cute but babes WHY are we charging $8 for a bagel with an additional charge per toppings/spread, when you sell single bagels for $4?? This only gives me more of an incentive to buy plain bagels and add my own stuff at home. But why would anyone do that if they're already going out to get a bagel at a cute spot as Pipsqueak Bagel? The vegan cream cheese consistency has improved since my last visit, but my total for a single bagel with arugula, tomato and cucumber was $12...still quite a pricey bagel. read more

I really loved my experience at Pipsqueak Bagels. Yes, it's pricy, but the quality of their bagels is excellent. I've had excellent bagels all across the country, and it's hard to find anything close to what they do in New York, but I feel like this place comes close. I think that's why the line for this place can get quite long on the weekends. The place is very small, but cute! The service here is really great and very helpful. I wanted to try their Cream and Jam Bagel, but I wasn't sure what kind of bagel to put it on. They recommended a Sea Salt Bagel to get the salty and sweet flavor balanced. They were right! I can't really speak for anything else on the menu, but I loved the Cream and Jam. The fresh basil on top really brought all the flavors together. The bagel itself had a perfect texture to it. It was a pretty large bagel, which made it feel more worth the price! I will definitely return on my next visit to Portland! read more

If the name pipsqueak bagels didn't already win you over, their food, their service, and the offer all experience will. I stopped by on a busy Friday, with a one year old. IYKYK how bringing a child into an establishment can be. But the owner and her staff are so on it. We were handed this itty bitty bagel for him to munch on. Fantastic. It's the small service things like that, that make a huge difference in such a positive way. I had previously read the reviews that the line sucks, and takes forever but I'm here to say that just isn't true. The line moved speedy quick, and the systems they have in place make it for a quick line. I think the line was around the side and took maybe 8 mins total to get my order in. So if *that* is too long for you I suggest maybe taking a lesson in patience. While in line the music was good, and what was fun is you can watch the workers go about their work. You can tell that the work environment is fun. Customer service shines on all aspects. From your order, the peek a boo with us from the employees, and the interactions with other customers from the staff. Now onto the food, Uh? No notes. Amazing. Fantastic. So good. If I moved out of Portland, I'd ask for my family to bring me a dozen of these bagels. They were so perfectly made. The cream cheese was fluffy and creamy. I probably could have just had a bowl of it. I'll be back! read more

The good: I mostly enjoyed eating this bagel (Sunday Best on an everything bagel). A generous portion of smoked salmon and large enough to split with another person. The bad: everything else. The fact it took 4 visits to actually get to try this place. One morning it was 8am and there was just a note on the door saying they will open at 9 for the staff to "celebrate"? This makes me feel like on any given day they might decide to open whenever they want? They will run out of bagels at some time every morning before whatever time they are scheduled to be open. It would be nice to just be able to get food in my neighborhood without having to obsessively check Instagram to know if it's possible that day. The onions on the everything bagel were so burnt that the burnt flavor overtook the rest of the flavors. The price (too much). The wait (too long). I am by no means a bagel snob so for me there is absolutely no reason I need to wait so long or pay so much for a bagel. I live in the neighborhood but I doubt I will be back. I write this review not to be a killjoy but to help people gauge whether or not it's worth the effort for them. The unreliableness (either within or not within their control) is a huge dealbreaker for me. read more

Saturday morning at 9am, there was a line out the door but not yet stretched past the store so we were not deterred. Once to the register, the wait is not long at all. You get your bagged bagels right away then you wait for your name to be called for any sandwiches. Bagels were dreamy. Perfect combination of crispy, chewy, and fluffy. Also ordered the fruit & cream because it looked intriguing! On the sea salted bagel, it was a sweet & salty treat! I would share a bunch of flavors so you can sample the depth they offer here. Coffee beans made in collaboration with Puff Coffee is five stars. The space is cute inside and some outdoor seating available too. We'd for sure come back. Did I mention friendly people? That too! read more

Their graphics are terrific -- especially the bike-riding bagel mural on the inside wall. Even the sandwich board out front is cool. (Nice things to look at while waiting in line.) There was a line the day I went, but it moved fast. I appreciated that the staff (maybe they are the owners?) took the time to smile and chat with each customer, despite the crowd. Yes, pleasantness is important, maybe more important than speed! The bagels? Very good. I didn't do a side-by-side comparison but I'm thinking they rank just below Bernstein's and just above Henry Higgins, in my Portland bagel rankings. I tried a variety half dozen, and my favorite was new to me: rosemary sea salt. Goes very well with peanut butter and strawberries! read more

The line wasn't too bad on a weekend morning. I got the fruit and jam bagel. They did not skimp on the toppings. The bagel was a bit chewy but overall I enjoyed my bagel. There's limited parking in the lot and plenty of street parking. There are also tables outside to enjoy your food. read more

We waited in line when Pipsqueak opened on a Sunday, the smell of baked goods in the air tantalizing our nostrils. We're shuffled into the establishment promptly at open. A menu is found on the wall, I take it down to read a short list of sammies and schmears. As I peruse the bagel sandwiches to the soundtrack of Gangsta rap, the artist mentions his Johnson and an employee abruptly skips to the next song. Hailing from the east coast I know bagels. I have some expectations that I already left at the door, I excuse the lack of breakfast sandwiches at 7am and have a little remorse waiting in line without an option for a sweet bagel, perhaps cranberry which is natively grown in the PNW. These are lofty expectations, I know. I'd settle for a perfect bagel. We order 4 bagels, plain schmear and coffee. I think they are serving Puff, which is highly welcome as I take a sip. We take the bagels home, still warm from being freshly baked, slice two open and enjoy with schmear. These bagels have the perfect chew, soft and crunchy. These bagel is also larger than most in Portland. A couple hours later we slice the other two and make bacon, egg sammies, roasting the bagel with butter, then adding cream cheese, fried egg with melted Emmental cheese, and fried bacon. Both of us devour the bagels. I think it's safe to say Pipsqueak despite the limitations offer a bagel that is par excellence. If you are a bagel lover, you will probably admire these bagels. I'd... write... more... but... fading... ...carb coma. So... delicious. read more

delicious bagels!! Crunchy outside, soft and airy inside, GENEROUS amount of cream cheese. Creative flavors together. Wishing they had some eggs and bacon available but they're "keeping it simple" with a smaller menu. Wishing there was one of the west side of town. Fruit and cream on rosemary bagel was phenomenal. **3.5, rounding to 4** I *wanted* to give Pipsqueak 5 stars, I really did, but I couldn't do it. They're just not a grand slam for me. The product is top tier: I came for a great bagel, I got a great bagel. Would I consider it a NY bagel, no, but it's pretty close. I spent years eating bagels in the City and have yet to find true NY style perfection out here, but Pipsqueaks is decent - I think it's the water. The NY water that is - it has a certain je ne sais quoi that can't be replicated. You can taste the quality/freshness in the toppings, be it the cold cuts, spreads, etc, and it was nice to see the meats for the Italian Stallion being sliced right in front of you. The individual at the front counter taking orders was very pleasant - they were calm despite the long/constant line, and were courteous & patient with the individuals who hadn't looked at the menu while waiting. They did not appear rushed when I asked for a recommendation on what bagel to pair with the Fruit & Cream (the sesame was spot on, BTW), even with the line still out the door with no sign of stopping - kudos to them! The space itself is very sweet, and nicely decorated, without being over the top - very on brand. My one complaint is that it does get overwhelmingly crowded when there are people both sitting inside to eat and multiple people waiting for their orders - I wonder if introducing buzzers/outdoor waiting for orders, or taking all seating outside may alleviate that problem - come rainy season, I cannot fathom there being enough space!! Now, the downside: value. It's not there on all menu items. I will *gladly* pay a premium price for something like the Sunday Best, heck, even the above premium price for something like the Fruit & Cream that someone could replicate at home for less because they were both freaking amazing. But I've got to put my foot down at a bagel & spread being $8... let me break that down, because the menu does not: the bagel is $4. The spread -aka cream cheese, plain at that- was another $4. The Italian Stallion was another bust: $16 for what amounted to a $4 bagel + a few peppers, arugula & onion, a tiny bit of mayo, a single slice of cheese and 6 slices of deli meat. I mean, the bagel was bomb, and Olympic Provisions & Mama Lil's are always delicious, but FFS - minus the bagel, the reminder =/= $12 worth of product. NOTE: yes, I understand that prices do also reflect overhead & All the Things, but these are worse than NYC overhead costs - don't come at me. Needless to say, sadly, I don't think I'll be going out of my way again to drive out to Pipsqueak again - it was a try it and say I did. If there happens to be a time where they pop up at a local farmer's market, or I'm out that way, I might grab a Sunday Best or maybe a standalone bagel if I'm hungry, but otherwise, nothing singularly stood out enough to make it a worthwhile visit... very much a bummer read more

I've been waiting for them to open, and today was the first day I was able (er, willing) to get up early enough to try my luck at hopping in line. Got in line at 9:04, ordered at 9:50, had bagels in hand by 10:00. When it was our time there were still 6 bagel varieties to choose from. Once you order, it's quick! Everyone was friendly and working their tails off. We got what everyone and their mom had been posting about: the Sunday Best and the Fruit Cream. We agreed that it is worth the wait! Especially the Fruit Cream, what a treat. We agreed that we could easily split one of these. It was pretty easy to find a seat, and the vibes were lively all around. How are you gonna charge $11.50 for a bagel with salmon schmear?!? If anything you've made me appreciate Henry Higgins sooo much more. If you say a bagel is $4 and schmear is $3 and I got the Asiago black pepper and paid .50¢ extra my total should be $7.50, still overpriced, but I will manage. But no because you cut it and add cream cheese you think you can charge me $8 for a boyb and still charge the $3.50 for the specialty bagel and to spread the schmear. I'm actually flabbergasted that they charge so much for a bagel. My east coast roots wants to see this place fail on precedent of their egregious pricing strategy. Then it's not even piled high with cream cheese like it should be. Honestly I had them rated at a 3 before I took a bite, now I feel they deserve a 2... I think I'll have to go back and give them another shot. I've been looking forward to trying Pipsqueak Bagels for a few months now. I'm absolutely obsessed with bagels, so it's been high on my to-visit list. When I visited at around 10am, the place was packed, and there was quite a line, so people definitely like the bagels here. I feel like I'm pretty used to Portland prices, but I was really shocked when my rosemary and salt bagel with cream cheese was $8. I do feel like that's really excessive. Some of their bagel sandwiches were almost $20! To their credit, the bagels were pretty big, and they do give a hefty amount of cream cheese, but still. The last little thing that bothered me is that I asked for my bagel toasted, and I received a non-toasted bagel, but that could've just been an honest mistake. I'll stop by again at some point and review again, in hopes of a more favorable review. read more

This is in my general area in Southeast so I drive by it over the weekends often on my way to Trader Joe's and I always see a line that wraps around the corner next to Hapa Ramen. I finally went to check it out on a weekday morning to avoid the lines (although still you should go early before noon because once I came in thinking I would get a bagel sandwich for lunch and they were already sold out). There wasn't a line when I went this time, and the place is small but cute and bright. All the employees were super friendly and cheerful, and it does seem like they pull together the bagel orders nicely. I ordered the Gladstone Green, which is a bagel with hummus, arugula, pickled onions, cucumbers and tomatoes. I got it on the salt bagel, which was nice because of the burst of sea salt crystals. It reminded me of eating Korean salt bread. Even though you can tell the bagel is freshly made, there was a denseness to the center that made it feel heavy to eat. And while all the ingredients in the Gladstone were good, the hummus spread was so thin I could barely taste the hummus or even know it was there. It's decent for a bagel sandwich, but I wouldn't necessarily stand in a long line for it. read more

I love bagels...but, not Pipsqueak Bagels' bagels. As another reviewer stated, they are Wonder Bread masquerading as bagels. But, maybe even worse. This small bagel shop in Southeast is cute and the food was good, but I think the 4 stars describes it well. The store itself was very small with limited seating but the staff was kind. The menu is small and if you are looking for a breakfast sandwich this isn't the place to go. Their bagels are more cream cheese and cold meat focused. The Italian sandwich was tasty and the bagels themselves are delicious. They are well made with good flavor options, though a bit salty. The cream and fruit bagel was also very delicious with a great combination of tangy and sweet. Went on a Saturday morning at 11 and the line was out the door but fairly quick given that it's still a new spot in the neighborhood. I love bagels, these ones are soft, doughy and chewy. I happily picked the black pepper Asiago! $4 a bagel, not cheap but not exorbitant if the flavor is right. The flavor was right! A nice chewy bagel that was warm (would preferred it toastier, so I'll ask next time when it's not so busy) Then add schmear and toppings if you want. Here's my grievance, there's no pricing for things outside of the bagels and sandwiches. My bagel was $4. My grand total was $12, so my smoked salmon schmear was twice the cost of my bagel. Don't get me wrong, they gave me a ton (more than a bagel could handle) and I took it home and spread it on future toast for the week cause that schmear is delicious and it cost a ton. The line was long and I didn't want to hold things up and change my order. Service was friendly and swift. A few tables inside and a few outside. Aesthetics were great! Second time got two jalapeño cheese bagels, only one with cream cheese and it was $12. So plain schmear is $4. Jalapeño cheese is perfectly cheesy and spicy read more

There are few things that people back east are louder about in Oregon than bagels, and me and my sister basically went all the way from the West Side to Milwaukie to prove some loudmouth wrong. We... weren't that successful. We're from back east and have been down this road with bagels before. Someone gets a great writeup, gets people waiting for an hour for bagels, has everyone believing they've cracked the code and then... meh. Even the great bagel shops of Portland are at the top primarily because they're the ones making a fine, basic bagel and following the process to the letter. They aren't reinventing the wheel: They just aren't crossing out parts of the wheelmaking instructions wholesale and replacing them with their interpretation of a wheel that looks a whole lot like a sponge. So we schlepped out to Gladstone street and waited an undue amount of time for our one apiece. I took a plain bagel with scallion cream cheese and my sister took a rosemary sea salt bagel with plain cream cheese. Admittedly the bagels looked the part, if a little large (but Jersey bagels often come in slightly big, too, so no harm there), but once I got a hand on it, I knew I was in trouble. It shouldn't be sticky, but it should definitely be a bit tacky and shiny on the exterior. Nope. And once you've played this game in Portland a few times, you know where it's going: I took a bite and my teeth sank all too easily into a sponge that may as well have been a kaiser roll. The cream cheese held up (and is seldom the issue in places like this), but the bagel itself was not what it was billed. I blame only myself. Had I checked their socials, I would've seen the photos that told me how malleable the bagels were when held and how aerated their interior dough appeared. I could've spotted it, waved off the "these are just like New York!" reviews that I'd seen for so many other disappointing bagel upstarts, and just left this place alone. But in a way, I'm glad I didn't. For some places to simply make rent in this town, they have to position comfortable staples as premium products. We've seen it here with everything from donuts to grilled cheese, but if you're going to charge in the neighborhood of $5 for a single bagel before an ounce of cream cheese touches it, you have to deliver on what you're promising. The places that do this successfully earn repeat business because they're either offering something unique and unconventional--like Sincerely's sourdough Korean-inspired bagels--or the Proustian madeline, like Bernstein's note-perfect suburban New York bagel shop bagel. The Pipsqueak bagel is neither of the above. It's a middling Pacific Northwest rolled bun in a bagel's clothing. It's at the stage where it's relying on people who've invested enough time and money into its experience to be stubborn enough not to admit that the experience hasn't lived up to their expectations. It's hoping they'll cheerlead to save face. Well I've never waved pom poms for a lackluster bagel, and I'm not starting now. A star for the cream cheese and another for Puff Coffee, but I'm hoping enough early feedback inspires them to make at least a star's worth of changes. As it stands, we're not coming over from the west side for this again and would sooner bring a bag of Jersey bagels through airport TSA. read more

All the staff are friendly and excited to be serving the community (and they are also all hot) The building is clean, new build-out. Cute design and colors to match their logo. Came in yesterday for the first time; wanted to love these bagels, but I don't. Almost everything; texture, chew, crunch, size were there. So what is wrong here?! FLAVOR. There was none, and I think I know why (could be wrong) Do you guys salt the bagel water? Add any sugar to the recipe?Apparently not enough. I don't really want to get into a salt and sugar are bad for you convo, but they are crucial additives to give flavor to the dough, you don't add them in 25% daily requirement quantities, and I believe I detected none of either, giving these bagels and incredibly bland flavor profile. Also had one everything and noted your everything seasoning totally lacked salt. Hmmm. Love you guys; make them better !! read more
