3 year old excited for dr.shaw follow up visit after dental surgery that went excellent
Amanda J.

PLEASE READ IMPORTANT NOTE Clean. child friendly staff and environment. with coin machines in the back and televisions on ceiling to keep the kids busy. Dr. Shaw is the dental pediatrician for almost all our children in my family (which is many) and she is trusted and respected. Very important to note ! Don't settle for putting silver caps on your BABIES FRONT TEETH !!!! I did not know their is caps that are white in the front and silver in the back ! So when they smile it's not silver beaming out !!!! My son did lots of work 11 teeth that included baby root canals, fillings, and caps. But when he was done and I looked in his mouth I was in complete SHOCK ! They are beautiful! Snow White top front four teeth and silver in the back. They look like baby vaneers !!!! She only put the fully silver caps on his malors. Great work. Another dentist did not even make me aware of this. He would of had a mouth full of silver if I went somewhere else- HERES THE BEST PART MEDICAID COVERED IT !!!!!!! this looks like cosmetic work. Hope this helped someone

I moved to Houston approximately 6 years ago and was in need of a dentist for my then 10 month old. As a transplant who only knew one childless person, I had to depend on the reviews of others while making a choice for a pediatric dentist, this is how I was led to Dr. Joi Shaw. She is AMAZING!!! Aside from being astute, knowledgeable, and welcoming; she is also patient and gives the extra time one may need to thoroughly explain simple things that we may all not be aware of. For example, did you know that one shouldn't share utensils or drinks with their children if he or she has cavities or that xylitol, which is good for you can be found in some chewing gums or the importance of flossing before you brush or how about the importance of helping our independent children with brushing their teeth until their dexterity is more defined? The list is endless and I find the repetitive regurgitation of this information at our 6 month visits to be great and extremely useful. I mean let's face it, we all forget sometimes. With all that being said, one of the most important reasons why I will always continue to support Dr.Shaw and why I make that trek from Katy to her office is her compassion, meekness, and overall love of her profession. When my child had cavities, she supported my decision to not use anesthesia and did not try to push me or coax me otherwise. She told me the pros and cons of each method and stood behind my decision as a parent to make that choice for my child. She isn't hurried during our visits engages the children. In fact, on our last visit she explained the xrays to my daughter who toggles between wanting to be a dentist and a vet lol To add, the office is aesthetically pleasing and kid friendly. There are a number of televisions throughout for the children's viewing pleasure, video game systems for our children that are too cool to watch Moana(I love that movie) magazines for us adults, and after each visit the children received a new toothbrush, other goodies, and a token to win a prize after their visit. It also doesn't hurt that the office is also technologically savvy and use tablets for making the check in process that much smoother. You won't regret your decision of choosing Dr.Shaw. Her stellar reputation precedes her!

Very calm 2yr old getting teeth cleaned at Pinnacle Pediatric Dentistry!

They had a huge area with foam mats and blocks for kids to climb on and I was able to sit on the floor with him while he played so I could fill out the welcome paperwork. Next came the visit with Dr. Strassner (not sure if I spelt her name correctly) and she was absolutely wonderful! For one, because of my son's age, they don't expect him to be held down on a table so his teeth can be examined, which is what I was expecting, but they had a super kid friendly room with activities all over the wall and the doctor and I sat knee to knee so she could examine him while he was secured in both our laps. She was super thorough and cleaned his teeth in 30 seconds while we all sang him The Wheels on the Bus. She had an attentive, comforting bedside manner and made several excellent recommendations with alternative options depending on my comfort level. My son has a lip tie and she wasn't pushy about removing it because he is unaffected by it. After his (quick and thorough) visit, my son got to pick a toy from a bin and we were on our way. Wonderfully positive experience!

We brought our 18-month-old who was going to cry no matter what but they did all they could to make things pleasant for her. They give your kid balloons and little toys to take home. There's a television, if you want your child's favorite show on. Dr. Lam was super sweet to our toddler and to us (took the time to patiently answer all of our questions). I also really liked their waiting room -- it's fun and colorful without being too "childish" or cartoon-heavy. It's made to appeal to both adults and children which I really enjoyed. Parking is easy in their large free lot. Just a heads up, if you're bringing a stroller, park behind the building (that's where the ramp is). Also note that their office is pretty small so if you are bringing a stroller, I'd recommend a small one.

Right after our…read moredaughter's 1st birthday, we took her to West U Pediatric Dentistry for her first dentist appointment. We were expecting just an initial cleaning, counting teeth, etc etc but they caught us off guard when they told us she had a "very pronounced" lip and tongue tie and would need a procedure to correct both. They told us without this procedure, she would experience delays with speech and eating. They also said she would suffer breathing and orthodontic issues later in life. On top of this - they told us if we did not do this procedure within 2 months, she would have to be put under anesthesia for it since she would be too big to swaddle. We were given pricing and paperwork and told each procedure would be $1,500, more if we needed anesthesia. As you might imagine we were blindsided and our initial reaction was "we will do whatever it takes for our daughter", but felt uncomfortable with the entire visit so decided to discuss with our pediatrician first. Our wonderful pediatrician told us not to proceed with any procedures without a second opinion from a Texas Children's ENT. We scheduled with the ENT and saw her today. The doctor said her lip and tongue are both within the normal range and that we "shouldn't consider releasing either any time soon." She said there has been a national trend of overprescribing the procedure for lip and tongue release, and there is a national board that has now drafted protocols for when it actually needs to be done. She said our daughter doesn't meet those criteria by any stretch. She also asked how much the dentist was charging. When we told her $1,500, she said that was outrageous. She recommended we not respond to them and find another dentist, which we have already done. TLDR; get a second opinion and trust your instinct.
