My husband and I went to Beachconers recently for some ice cream. It was during the Covid-19…read morePandemic, so physical distancing was in effect. However, I was a bit disappointed to see that the workers were not wearing masks (note that we went June 29, 2020 and mandatory masks in indoors spaces in Ottawa was not in effect until July 7, 2020. I am assuming the workers are wearing masks now). Nonetheless the ice cream was good, but I would have liked the flavours to have been more potent. They have creative flavours, which I love. I am a traditionalist in some ways but when it comes to ice cream flavours, I love innovation. They had peach cardamom, strawberry basil, and chocolate marmalade. My husband actually went with the latter in a waffle cone. I went with a scoop of London Fog in a gluten-free cone, because well, I love all things London Fog flavoured, lol. Ice creams are $4.42 a scoop ($2 extra for an additional scoop). Waffle cones are an additional $0.75. I love that there is no extra charge for sugar cones or gluten-free cones. My London Fog ice cream only had a subtle taste of Earl Grey tea. I would loved for it to have had more of a potent flavour. The gluten-free cone was delicious! It tasted just like a regular sugar cone. It was super crispy. I loved it. I tried some of my husband's Chocolate Marmalade ice cream and it was chocolatey, but the orange flavour was also too subtle for my tastes. I would have liked a more robust orange flavour. Staff were nice. The ice cream shop is connected to Britannia Coffeehouse. To facilitate physical distancing, you enter through the ice cream shop and you exit through the cafe, so foot traffic is one way only. They also limit only 2 people or family inside the store at a given time. They sell ice cream by the pint as well. There are colourful chairs out front for you to sit and eat your ice cream. My husband and I just walked along the Britannia Park path and ate our ice cream during our stroll. The Beachconers Microcreamery is a cute place. I do like supporting locally owned businesses and I do like the idea of freshly made ice cream without preservatives. Street parking only, but we had no problems finding a spot.

The very tiny indoors consists of basically a place to line up and the freezer so not a whole lot to review about the decor there - but it still manages to be cheerful. Outdoors is where the action is with a rainbow of muskoka chairs lining the street and cafe tables with umbrellas in the yard. Would I return? Frequently Would I recommend? Yes!

Also support local We got 1 strawberry sundae + 1 chocolate sundae (unfortunately that one didn't make the cuts since we devoured that within seconds). The vanilla soft serve is SO incredibly good?!! Like wow. It's super soft and creamy- miles better than DQ. The young lady at the window was also super sweet and friendly! They also have a patio section with a few tables and benches & lots of variety on their menu! Do note that their sundaes come in only 1 size (which is pretty decent! Not too small and not too big, leaving you feel guilty afterwards. It's just the right size!) I will definitely be back to try their razzles next time since I've heard great things about it

Brett's Ice Cream is a little ice cream shop in Kanata. It's been around since 2013 but I only…read morelearned of it recently. It's a little shop with basically just a window where you order. It's a strip mall with an auto body shop. Not the most picturesque or romantic place, but the ice cream is good. You pretty much need to eat it in the parking lot (there are a few benches) or in your car. My husband and I went during the Phase 2 re-opening amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic, but I don't think they had to change their practices much because they were always takeout only with no place to sit and eat. There was absolutely no line up when we went on a Sunday afternoon in June. My husband is a traditionalist so he got a medium chocolate vanilla swirl in a waffle cone. It was $3.25 for a medium and an additional $0.75 for the waffle cone. I wanted to try their flavour burst which is flavour swirled into the ice cream in unique way (see photos). I got a small vanilla cone with cherry flavour burst. It was $2.25 for the small cone plus an additional $1 for the flavour burst. I enjoyed my cone. The ice cream was creamy and the flavour burst added a nice black cherry flavour to the cone. It wasn't too overwhelmingly sweet which was nice. I really want to try the Pina Colada flavour burst next time. Note that they only have soft serve ice cream. No hard/scoop ice cream. They do have milkshakes, slushies, slushie floats, sundaes, and Razzles, which are like Dairy Queen Blizzards or Mc Donald's McFlurries. Service was quick and courteous. I'm a huge fan. It's a bit of a trek to get to Kanata for me, but I would come back if I was in the area or planning to so other things in the area. Free parking in the parking lot that is shared with the auto shop.

So this ice cream shop just opened July 1, 2020. I can't help but to compare it to Brett's Ice…read moreCream in Kanata, because both ice cream shops are co-located with auto shops and both places sell soft serve ice cream with flavour bursts. The prices are the same too! Although the portion size at Coco's is smaller than Brett's. However, I live much closer to Coco's. I discovered Coco's Cafe and Creamery here on Yelp! I didn't even know that it existed, despite the fact that I live relatively close by. Good thing I was trolling for ice cream shops nearby on my trusty Yelp App! Lol. So they only have soft serve ice cream, no hard/scoop ice cream. They have coffee, affogato, and "Blizzardz" (which are like Dairy Queen Blizzards or McDonald's McFlurries). I had a small vanilla cone with a Pina Colada flavour burst ($2.25+$1=$3.25), and my husband had a medium vanilla cone with a coffee n' cream flavour burst ($3.25+$1=$4.25). I enjoyed my ice cream. The Pina Colada flavour was not intense enough in my opinion. I would have liked a more potent pineapple coconut flavour. My husband enjoyed his cone too. I had a taste of his and found the coffee flavour mild as well. Service was efficient and courteous. The person was wearing a mask, which I appreciated during these Covid Pandemic times. So you can only access this place while going westbound on Carling Ave (there is a median, so you cannot turn into the place while going eastbound. Also when you exit, you have to keep going westbound, which is a bit inconvenient if you want to go eastbound). You need to turn into the parking lot once you see the auto shop (Treff's Auto Centre/Coco Auto Service). If you drive until you actually see the Coco's Cafe and Creamery, it's too late, you've passed it. There is a chalk sandwich board that says "ice cream" to kind of alert you, but it's not too prominent. The ice cream shop is just a window where you order. There's 1 picnic table there where you can eat your ice cream. Or you can eat it in your car in the parking lot, lol. Or I guess you can walk along Carling Ave and eat your ice cream, although Carling is not the prettiest of streets, haha. Anyway, if you like Brett's Ice Cream but live east of Kanata and think driving to Kanata is too far, give Coco's Cafe and Creamery a try! There is free parking in the same lot as the auto centre.

There's also a small public square with some benches outside that will absolutely be useful for busy summer nights. My recommendation is to grab an ice cream sandwich bar from one of the freezers where you line up to order - great textures, fresh flavours, and lots of fun. Easy to split with a loved one! Prices are a bit high, but Moo Shu sources local ingredients (with the names of local farms on the flavour signs!), and pays employees a livable wage. It's a great place to stop by and support, while trying a delicious new flavour. Their new location is absolutely a step up :)

I showed up around 9:00 on a random Tuesday and the place was impressively packed. The line was snaking out the door but it moved quickly. I've always been a huge fan of French Onion Soup, so when I saw a flavor called French Onion Scoop, I obviously had to get it. It's not good. The quality of the ice cream itself is top-notch (i.e. it's super creamy) but the flavor is just kind of gross. Plus there's a lot of sautéed onion in there and I think there's a reason onion and ice cream have never been combined before. I ate some of my cup but wound up throwing most of it away. To paraphrase Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park, Moo Shu was so preoccupied with whether or not they could make a French Onion Soup inspired ice cream flavor, they didn't stop to think if they should. (I should note I also tried a couple bites of their DunkaMoo's ice cream sandwich and it was really delicious, so obviously they are capable of making an excellent product.)

And many spots to sit outside in nice weather. Baked goods are hard to resist. Small but mighty selection. Everything is good! Coffee is reliably well made, and the cozy seating area is great on a cold day. What I love about inside is the low key quirkiness, from old hair salon chairs to snow shoe art, I usually spot something I've never noticed before. They do also have a small light lunch type of menu, and anything I've ordered from that has been tasty. Staff are top notch - well versed on the product, always genuine, and efficient. It's a little gem hidden away in the neighborhood. In summer, parking can be a challenge, and the ice cream line looks daunting. But good things come to those who wait, and the line moves at an efficient pace.
