But, Tasti D-Lite is the perfect place if you're a fan of filling up your own cup and adding toppings to your heart's delight. While the variety in froyo here isn't huge, their topping selection is the biggest I've ever seen. They have everything that you can think of: from chocolates to granola to candies to fresh fruits to fruits covered in chocolate. Truly a froyo lovers dream. All of that went straight out the window when I saw my favorite gelato spot! Tried practicing self control by not walking on Carmine & Bleecker. So the rationale begins, well I walked over 18k steps, I deserve a treat! Venchi's never disappoints! Venchi's limited edition, collaboration with MSC cruise line featured the crunch wave gelato! Oh my, why did that flavor have to be a limited edition! The best gelato flavor, I have ever tasted outside of my regular favorites. This gelato flavor was inspired by Italy's traditional Bacio di Dama biscuit. Had to slowly savor, each bite. The base was a bourbon, vanilla, gelato, the sand featured a crunchy, hazelnut biscuit, and salted toffee pieces. The electric blue color, that immediately had my attention, was a vibrant, natural blue spiralina top layer that mirrors the deep blue color of the Mediterranean. My entire experience from ordering, sample, purchase, was a 10 out of 10! And the cherry on top was having a place to sit inside the cafe!

I went in and was offered several tastes by a very nice employee behind the counter. It brought back memories of my days scooping ice cream at Baskin Robbin's. There were a few flavors I liked, and a few I didn't. I settled on 3 flavors, two of which were the favorites of the employee. Green Pistachio from Brontë Chocoviar 75% Mango Let's start with the Green Pistachio - I didn't know what Brontë was and asked - apparently the Brontë pistachio is rare as it's only grown in the volcanic ash of Mt. Etna in Sicily! The gelato was excellent; the pistachio flavor was superb! One of my favorite ice cream flavors is chocolate - especially dark chocolate! Venchi had two dark chocolate flavors - Chocoviar 75% and Extra Dark Chocolate 77% (vegan - no dairy). I tasted both and the Chocoviar was much more flavorful! It was a great chocolate gelato! Last, but definitely not least, was another favorite of the employee - Mango. It was a totally different flavor than the first two choices and I asked if I could have that '3rd scoop' in a separate cup! I didn't mind the Pistachio and Chocolate gelatos in one cup, but didn't think the mango flavor would 'blend' with the other two. No problem - I got 2 cups of gelato! It was as good as I remember Grom being - maybe a little better. I really appreciated all the different tastings and suggestions the employee gave to me!

I ordered a scoop of Double Fold Vanilla on the bottom of a boring cup with a scoop of Wild Foraged Berry Slab Pie on top, all with a lot less fanfare. This came to twelve and change, with a small tip. I sat inside at the base sill of the window looking out to Hudson Street, eating that cold and rich ice cream. The flavors of the Wild Foraged Berry Slab Pie surprisingly did not hit me with the a la mode effect I anticipated. It's very good with a hint of the berries, but the descriptions may cause one to anticipate something that may not actually cross your palate. In other words, manage your expectations. The Double Fold Vanilla, on the other hand, is as vanillic as one can expect from the description and very smooth, which is not in the brief description. This does not hit me the way Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla hits me, but Blue Bell is not distributed here in NYC. Salt & Straw keeps vanilla on its standard menu and you can purchase this rich and full cream vanilla by the pint if you can get it home without melting. They sell insulated bags I noticed. S&S is the kind of place where it would be worthwhile to explore their more diverse offerings, such as Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper, Honey Lavender or Arbequina Olive Oil. Salt and Straw offers crafted ice cream in unique flavors, such as, Chocolate Babka with hazelnuts, sea salt with caramel ribbons, strawberry honey balsamic with pepper, honey lavender or French vanilla. I could choose cup or cone: "Salt & Straw offers freshly made, handcrafted waffle cones for about $1.65 added to the price of your scoops. You can choose from their classic house-made waffle cone or their signature Salted Brownie Waffle Cone, which is made from a rich brownie batter" I tasted the strawberry honey balsamic and wasn't jazzed. I opted for the sea salt with caramel ribbons. "Our reimagination of the classic. We spike our cream with just enough Guatemalan fleur de sel to bring out its nuances, then drizzle in ribbons of our hand-burned caramel." Well.. reimagined deliciously; was light, creamy and a nice ratio of salt to caramel. Highly recommend. The service is excellent and nicely air conditioned on a steamy afternoon. The Hudson Street location is perfect on a less steamy afternoon to enjoy the plethora of cafes and shops nearby. The only disconnects; the staff should know the NY Mag perk: cup or cone was listed as an option. One employee stated cup only. Well.. I corrected him. Additionally, back of house standards could be better; when you are in the food business cleanliness is everything. Salt and Straw offers delicious crafted ice cream.
