Pinewood Park is a triangular park bounded by Sunrise Blvd., Hayes Rd., and U.S. 1. It is across from the Ft. Pierce Police Department.
Park amenities include a playground, tennis courts, a gazebo, one large pavilion with 4 picnic tables, grills, and restrooms. It is a nice park for recreation, tennis games, and cookouts.
I think the coolest thing about this otherwise ordinary park and what caused me to stop is that it has three canons from the Spanish 1715 Fleet that sank off the coast north of Fort Pierce during a violent hurricane. The ships, carrying large amounts of gold and silver coins along with jewels, were destined for the king and queen of Spain. 1715 Fleet-Queens Jewels LLC, a historic shipwreck salvage operation owns the exclusive rights to the remains of the 1715 Fleet.
Unfortunately when the cannons were put on display over 30 years ago, they weren't done with the care and restoration work that would be done today. If you want to see a better example of a cannon head to the Melody Pier along the riverfront. In 2022 a cannon was installed that was recovered in 2018. It underwent three years of restoration work and reverse electrolysis before it was places at the pier. read more
