I recently hired pinestate for heating problem. It turned out a circulator pump was bad. Well it cost me $745.00 for one hour job. Granted it was a Saturday but when the technician walked in he Said "I bet you circulator is gone" and after a check with a meter, that is what the problem was. Really,$ 745.00, they must think everyone is stupid. I called the company to ask for a reduction but Lee who said he was one of the owners just was cold with very poor customer service. $844 "standard price" to replace a toilet with a $98 home depot bare bones type toilet. This was after Tim, the tech who called me when he was onsite, quoted a price of $525. Need I say any more? Yes, I do. This service experience was so bad it created tension with my property manager, who the tech "dumped" the problem onto when it seemed as if Tim the tech was dispatched to a more profitable job, leaving my property manager to fix things after Tim told me my property manager was "qualified" to fix the problem. My property manager ran into issues when trying to fix the problem, and eventually Pine State agreed to come back and complete the job, but not after I wasted valuable time during precious work hours where I had to be in problem resolution mode on a plumbing matter vs. doing my daytime job. Isn't that why one pays a professional to do - to resolve a problem? I have never written any type of online review until now. I am a long distance landlord and I appreciate good service, and expect to pay above average market rates for quality work when combined with good customer service. I was a fan of Pine State, until now. I felt like I was taken advantage of: 1) being a long distance landlord, and 2) can't help but wonder if Pine State is one of the companies that has engaged in alleged price gouging during the COVID19 pandemic. In a professional manner I raised my issue - which was the service experience (NOT the pricing) with the company. Eventually one of the owners, Lee Nicely, exchanged emails with me. I was surprised at his response. For a company that charges extremely high rates, I was amazed at his apparent lack of concern over a customer's dismal experience. Even worse, he made me feel like the purpose of my inquiry was to negotiate a discount. I wasn't even thinking about that until he brought it up. When he offered a "discount" to, eventually $611, naturally I didn't disagree. The owner took the employees side, didn't believe my side of the story, and of course in the process made me feel like my business wasn't appreciated. This is a shame because up until now I have had very good service. This entire experience has made me question about the management of this company-primarily the motives of mamangemen. In reflection, I think my biggest disappointment is the way the owner didn't really seem to care about the service experience. It felt like he was clearing his inbox of yet one more task. Oh, and by the way, I also paid duplicate fees - I paid my property manager for his time, and also for the purchase of a toilet. If interested, read below for my property manager's account of what happened. Property Manager's Account of what happened: 1. At your request I picked up an American Standard toilet at Home Depot and delivered it to xxxxx Street. 2. I left toilet and left to work for another client 3. I received a call from you requesting that I return to Bolton Street as you had concern about what the teck from the pluming company was reporting to you. 4. When I arrived the teck was on the first floor and wanted to show me the water damage from the leaking toilet. For reasons unknown to me, he was more concerned about the damage to the kitchen ceiling. 5. We both then went up stairs to the bathroom and he stated that the toilet I had delivered was (CRACKED). 7. I looked at the toilet and only observed that the toilet was CHIPED, NOT CRACKED. 8. I told the teck that I would return the toilet and pick up new one and return. 9. The teck advised that he had other appointment and asked me if I was able to install the toilet. 10 I advised the teck that I would install it as he did not seem to be interested in doing it Again he wanted to show me the damage to the kitchen ceiling. 11. The teck then returned and removed the toilet that he had installed. 12. I expected that the teck would have repacked the toilet in the box for it's return to Home Depot, however he left it for me to carry down the stairs and repack it. Again while I was repacking the toilet, he was in the kitchen poking the ceiling in attempt to show me how soft it was. 13 The following morning I returned with a new toilet and attempted to install it 14 For unknown reason I could not get the toilet to fit against the wall. In my attempt I broke the tank and advised you of same and stated that you needed for them to pick up a new toilet and install it I was not going to attempt it again when it should have been completed by the original company. 15 I know one of the major issues is the cost charged by the company. It's my opinion that you were taken advantage of by the company. I returned to xxxxx Street a couple days later and discovered that they installed a very cheap AMERICAN STANDARD TOILET. The toilet they installed was a $ 98,00 toilet. 16 Think about what it cost, over $ 700,00 dollars for a toilet that they purchased for less then $ 100,00 and installed in less then one hour. read more

I'd steer clear of these guys, if I were you. Initially somewhat helpful when our current propane heat n hot water failed to function. (Previous contractor). Their rep quoted us a very high $11,000 to replace. He also arranged for us to use an old beat up portable water heater until the work was done. He said no charge if they did the work. In the interim, thinking that the quote was high, I decided to seek another estimate. When I emailed the Pine State guy to let him know what my plan was, I stated that we appreciated their service, but if we went with another company, we'd certainly compensate them for the use of the water heater. Well, that prompted the Pine State guy to reply, offering to finance the job, at 9% interest, which would bring the final cost to be $19,000!!! And, if we didn't do business with them, the fees for the use of the water heater, which isn't worth more than $50, would be $560 to rent, plus $50 a day. So, essentially, he was saying "do business with us or else". I don't play those games. We went with another company for $2,000 less, and disconnected the water heater. It's now in the driveway, waiting for Pine State to take it away. I'll send them a couple of hundred bucks for the trouble. Not a penny more. Heavy-handed pricks. read more

Pine State prices are outrageous while their people are great. The latest incident occurred while I was selling my home. To inspect the sewer, I hired PS to remove and replace a toilet so the sewer line could be inspected. Bill: $354! They said it's a flat rate and not related to the time spent to do the work. read more

Do not use this company! Not even for an estimate. They sold me a $7,000 brand new heating gas system and it broke down and completely failed to deliver heat several times in the first winter season. This continued for four winter seasons and Pine State just said "Yeah, we discovered those units are junk, that sucks for you," and offered absolutely nothing in the way of refund or reimbursement. Then when I got new estimates for replacement, as soon as I said "PIne State" to the other contractors, the winced and told me Pine State is known for giving lousy service and ripping people off. read more

Don't use this company. They are way over priced. I figured out that they charged me $450/hr for a 1-hour job. They have flat fee prices that are designed to hide the real cost of the work they are doing, and they will not give you a breakdown of labor, parts, etc. If you use them you are supporting their inflated overhead for a large HVAC. I used them once and lost a customer for life--hope it was worth it for them. Get a small, local independent HVAC provider instead of these crooks. read more

I called this company to check my gas furnace which was not working properly. The guy who came was very nice but did not seem to know anything about the system I had. Told me that there was nothing he could do and the unit needed to be replaced. Thankfully, I called La Vopa plumbing and heating, and he tweaked a few things and my furnace has been running great ever since. read more

Expensive up-sellers. Their business model is to show up, have you sign a sheet to conduct the work for a very high fixed price and tell you that it's a good deal if the job takes 6 hours (literally!), then try to upsell you on more services. My case: a routine and preventative routing out of the sewer line. The process: they called my home phone the afternoon before and announced they wouldn't show up unless I called them back; the tech showed up and told me to sign a document saying I would pay him $300 for the job, which was a bargain if it took 6 hrs; the tech did the job in 1/2 hr; the tech then tried to upsell me on taking a video of my sewer line and said "I'll have to write down that you declined the service." We stopped using them for our furnace a few years ago for being high-priced and low quality - and chalked it up to a conflict of interest for an oil-seller. Not sure what possessed me to call them for plumbing -- maybe their bright green shiny trucks? Now I know how they pay for them. . . read more

Overpriced and Deceiving. They gave me a quote 0f 12,650 for hot water heater and heat pump setup. We felt it was pricey but we needed the work done. Installation was ok. The salesman was not very good. Kept forgetting the details. After all was said and done they sent us forms to fill out so they could get rebates. This was never mentioned in conversations nor was it in the contract. The companies response was ... oh our salesman was new and forgot. The salesman (michael dupuis) to cover his posterior said he discussed it. I don't forget conversation like that. My advice would be don't do business with this company no matter how badly you need the work done.. I was buying a house and needed the furnace cleaned (the vents were so choked it kept shutting down) the night before the inspection. The guy I had scheduled with cancelled at the last minute and recommended Pine State. Pine State charged me $150 just to show up after 5 pm and then charged an additional $650 for a cleaning that usually costs $200. The furnace failed a week later and I had to hire another gut to check it out. He showed me that Pine State had only vacuumed out the clogged vents and had NOT cleaned the furnace at all! We were sold an overpriced boiler from Pine State. Lee was a good salesman and a fast talker and could install our boiler right away, so rather than sticking with our trusty heating service guy, we chose Pine State. There was apparently a miscommunication right in that first meeting about what we needed for a system, and it just continued from there. Communication overall during the install was poor. It was winter so we took off work, and took our infant to stay elsewhere for two days while they were installing only to find out on the second day that they hadn't started the job on time due to illness- some thing pretty important to communicate. When we arrived home to our unheated house, they informed us that they guy who knew about the install was still sick so "they are just trying to figure it out". Come to find out later, from our old heating guy, that they missed an important part and didn't bleed the radiators or add ph neutralizer. I have to say that they have gone out of their way to make it right (though I did have to go into what my husband calls, "beast-mode" to get them to admit culpability), and my experiences with them after the original install and complaint have been very pleasant but I would go with someone you know and trust even if it means waiting a bit! We have heard from other professionals since then that their rep is not great with contractors either. read more

Be very leery of this company. I called this company on a Friday to perform change a garbage disposal at a rental property that I own. This company showed up on Monday to replace the disposal. The individual who represented this company was on site asked one of the tenants to call me and provide me with the price while he returned to get parts. The price was $461 which is outrageous. For those who don't know a standard garbage disposal with parts is going to come in around $140 from Home Depot. That's retail cost. It should take 30-60 minutes to change a garbage disposal plus 30 minutes travel time. So, this company was going to charge me $320 for labor. I declined to pay that. I own other properties and know what things like this cost. I was able to get another plumber in there for Tuesday to replace it at $265 (40% less). This plumber called me while at the house and asked why am I changing the garbage disposal? I said why? He said the individual from Pine State who came over unclogged it and reset the unit and it was perfectly fine. Buyer beware. These people attempted to scam me, and I would speculate that I am not alone. I have notified the Attorney General for Maine. read more

Before calling this company for service - think. This company quoted me $260 to tighten two screws on a toilet seat - I have the quote to prove it. To fix two sinks they charged $766 - which is more then what the two sinks are worth brand new. I have now one to blame but myself for using them. The technician that came to service my hot water heater lied to me and was so disingenuous that I feel the need to post this. He was forcing me to buy a new hot water heater when all I needed was to have the heating elements replaced. He then told me it would cost almost as much to replace the elements as it would to replace the hot water heater. Which as I found out after a technician from another company came to help me, that was a complete lie. The elements cost $30 each (I needed 2), and the new hot water heater with installation was $1000. I will never use Pine State services again!! read more

My family has used Pine State for years. We were so pleased with our most recent service call that I felt the need to share. I'm honestly shocked at some of these other reviews, as they are NOT reflective of any experience I have had. Over the extremely cold February 14th weekend a pipe burst in a rental property owned by my family. Obviously we were in a panic and had no idea where to begin to fix the issue. There were kids living in this building!! We had to do something and soon! Enter Pine State. We were so happy when a manager answered the phone (way more comforting than an answering service) and he assured us that a certified gas technician could assist us today. They had someone onsite within 45 minutes. The technician was very knowledgeable and answered ALL of my questions. He was professional and gave us the price before he began the work. He fixed the pipe, got the heat up and running, and stayed until a comfortable temp. was reached. To me, the price seemed very fair for how prompt and efficient they were. You get what you pay for!!! I would definitely use them again and refer any family and friends to do so as well. read more

As a new owner to this home, I needed to have an annual inspection of my heating system. Pine State came and charged me an exorbitant amount of money. I mentioned that the water in the shower was luke warm, the technician said it was "fine". I called them back , again about the lukewarm water, and they gave me an estimate of over $750. to "replace a valve". A toilet is 200 to 250 they charge 800. Stay away from this company and don't get a wall hung gas boiler. Life time maybe 12 years after costly repairs. A annual cleaning cot in material maybe 15.00 they charge 299. Unless you buy a 59.00 agreement than goes to 199. Total 258. You should not have to pay for 24 hour service. Crooks. We were waiting for a technician to visit our business for two days but when the technician called upon "arriving", our lines were busy and the technician left. We promptly called them back within 5 minutes of missing the original call, only to be told that the company policy demands that the technician move on to the next service appointment. This policy was never fully explained to us. Our business is open Monday-Friday 10 am - 5 pm and all this technician had to do was walk inside. Furthermore, we're running a business and it simply isn't possible for all our lines to be free 100% of the time. The Pin State representative we spoke with, made no attempt to even contact the technician to see if they were still in range while we were on the phone. They claimed that their technician had purportedly logged a call time that fell 10 minutes prior to the missed call recorded on our system (we're surmising this is just another tactic to skip appointments). I can understand having such a policy for residents, but we're a business open to the public. There's no reason such a policy should apply to businesses open to the public if their appointments are scheduled during regular business hours. read more
