Our room was very comfortable, with a great view of Strawberry Mountain. We happened to wake up at 5am and watched the sunrise reflected on the mountain, utterly beautiful. You will have to call them for pricing per night on the cabins. The town of Seneca does not have any restaurants, but does have a post office and a small store. At the store you can get some groceries as well as gas and diesel. The city of John Day is only 25 miles away and if you like to eat out they have some great restaurants.

We arrived in Sumpter about 10:30pm, We had no reservations and this was the first place we saw so we stopped. Being so late the office was closed so we took a chance and called the number we were so pleased to get a live person answering our call. Sherry came down to the office and got us checked in for our stay. We found out that Sherry and Ron had just purchased the park and have been busy cleaning the public areas and making renovations. Pride of ownership and great customer service shone through. We had a great stay and will be back!

And I'd bet it's the best place for a 100 miles and more. The bedrooms are quaint, and lovely. At first glance you will be charmed by the decor and character in each room all the way from the porch through the dinning area, into the music room, up the stairs and all the to the way up to the second floor. The bathroom is shared, for some that is an issue but don't fret they have another bathroom downstairs. It is clean with plenty of room to work with if needed. Breakfast! I really should start with the breakfast!! It was honestly the best I've had in a very long time! How awesome is it to wake up to someone making you a homecooked meal!? I think it's pretty special!! I got up had a nice hot cup of coffee and sat outside and watched the sunrise. I felt like I was in a storybook. Living the dream! The wonderful hosts made me a special breakfast to go since I had to be out of the house early. I really hope I can come visit them again when I am on vacation and not working, as I was this trip! We were driving down the 395 between John Day and Seneca checking out the beauty of the Malheur…read moreForest while searching for a place to camp for the night. We drove right past the sign for Starr and turned around to check it out...very glad we did. The Starr Campground sits right off the highway and has 11 sites set in 2 sections, an upper loop and a lower section. When we stayed last Thursday night there was only one other party camping. Our neighbors were set up in the lower section where the sites are a bit more spread out, while we opted to stay in the loop nearer the highway. Nothing at the campground is far from the highway, but we found it peaceful. Each section has a vault toilet, and the upper one was surprisingly clean, as was the campground overall. The setting is lovely, engulfed in beautiful trees...including some larches that were turning their gorgeous yellow while we were there. The sites at Starr are only $6, a tiny price to pay for a beautiful night in the Malheur Forest. Highly Recommend!
