Dr. Drew decided that my son would need to undergo the procedure under general anesthesia, and an anesthesiologist would be brought in. We returned for a second appointment, during which they were able to perform the exam. We do need to follow up with an oral surgeon, which I expected, as I heard the same information from his previous dentist. Additionally, my cousin is a pediatric dentist and knows Dr. Drew, as she works in Highland Park. I am planning to switch my general dentist to Dr. Drew.

My son refused to sit in the dental chair (even after seeing all of the fun things it can do) and so she went with it and did a majority of his visit with him standing. The office is cute and very inviting for kids. As soon as we walked in, my son migrated towards the puzzles and made himself comfortable. The friendly staff was able to get me in for an evening appointment within a month, whereas other offices that I had called were making me wait much longer for a desired time slot. Lake Family Dental was one of the most bizarre and inappropriate medical experiences I have ever…read morehad. I initially came there for a toothache. A couple of days later I developed an even worse toothache on a different tooth. The doctor agreed to see me. He made some recommendations, but then told me he wouldn't be able to see me for a month despite my being in pain. Pain is always grounds for an immediate visit. I asked around for the "kidsnips of dentists" thinking that someone who specializes in children would be our best bet (and have lots of toys in the waiting room). After a few weeks of reading about the Berenstain Bears & Dora's adventures at the dentist we visited the highly recommended (by many friends) Dr Resnick. My little one was psyched..mostly for the toy in the treasure chest that I mentioned she'd get after she behaved (fingers crossed) at the dentist. As I hoped the waiting room was filled with toys. The dental hygienist kept coming out for other kids and everytime my daughter would yell "I'm ready now!" And then finally (10 minutes can seem like 10 hours when waiting with a toddler) it was our turn! The dental hygienist went over how to properly care for our toddler's teeth and I even learned a few things (like not to give her milk anymore before bedtime..oops). Dr. Resnick stopped in just to say hi and meet my daughter on his way to another patient...and promised to be back soon. When he returned my daughter sat on my lap in the chair and opened her mouth wide while he "painted her teeth" with a strawberry flavored fluoride, declared her cavity free (phew!) and urged me to get rid of the pacifier at night soon (another oops). He'd be happy to know that the binky fairy did happen to visit last night! My little one behaved perfectly and when it was all done she gave the dental hygienist a huge smile and said "NOW can i have my toy?" She picked out a tiny little car from the treasure chest and added it to her goody bag filled with a kids toothbrush and toothpaste. The office itself is very overstimulating (arcade-like waiting area, open bay with multiple chairs, loud cartoons), which may work for some children but was overwhelming for ours. Once we were brought back, the hygienist lowered the chair without warning or explanation, which immediately frightened our child and caused significant distress. As she became increasingly upset, the response was to suggest holding her hands and legs to continue the exam. For a non-urgent, first visit, this did not feel appropriate to us. During this time, a second hygienist made joking comments and laughed about our child's distress, which felt unprofessional and dismissive. When we chose to end the visit, we were told "it will be the same next time," rather than discussing alternative, child-centered approaches. This was surprising, as we have had very different experiences at other pediatric dental practices where first visits focus on comfort, narration, and gradual exposure rather than restraint. Parents considering this office should be aware of the approach used here and decide whether it aligns with their expectations for a child's first dental experience.
