This is an amazing local spice store located in downtown Colorado Springs. I was impressed with the vast selection of spices, honey, jams and hot sauces. I came for cinnamon and was surprised to see so many different varieties! Thankfully they have testers so you can smell the different spices which can help you make a decision. A nice employee named Sandy was very helpful and welcoming. She helped me to join the free spice rewards program and I can't wait for my birthday month to receive my complementary spice! I really like how sustainable this shop is-if you bring in your empty spice jar, they're refill it and give you a small incentive discount! Plus, they have samples of all of their tantalizing jams. I popped into this store while in the area because I was curious about their offerings. When I was approached by the sales woman. I asked if this was the shop that had been on North Academy and she made an appalled sound and said, "Penzey's?!!! Absolutely NOT!" I was so taken aback. She acted completely offended I would even consider the comparison. WTF?! I purchased a few items and she later said, "thanks for taking my ribbing earlier." REALLY?! All I wanted to do was check out your store. Not sure what offense I had made, but you may want to think about projecting your issues with competitors on to your customers. I really really love this place. They have so much to choose from. Sometimes if I know I only need one thing I have to shield my eyes from the rest of the store because everything is so tempting!!! They have quality spices, even ones that are hard to find like chai spice mix for baking. Oh how I love their baking section! This is the place to find whole vanilla beans! I needed a couple specialty spices and didn't want to run all over town looking for them not to be able to find what I needed/wanted. I also happen to be in a higher risk group for Covid. Ok disclaimer...aka rant lol I also am very careful during flu season I absolutely detest getting ill in any way shape or form! So I avoid handshaking I have social distanced from people with cold etc for years yuck because I hate colds and don't want them germs and can't understand why they don't stay away from other people when they are ill! I ordered on line and saw everything I wanted with the option to purchase either in bags or bottles ( see pic I opted for bottles) I didn't know if they would be icky plastic or what. To my surprise they were glass!! Yay!! The lids are shaker or spoon top double win! The price is listed on the lids so you also know what you paid on the item. I ordered on Sunday and by Tuesday they were delivered! (I believe it was USPS) That's a miracle in itself! Packaging was neat in good shape everything arrived in perfect condition. Like other reviewers somewhere have said the freeze dried corn is awesome it has popcorn texture slightly sweet. I had been looking for this for sometime but only found hard crunchy stuff I ended up throwing away. Our favorite prepackaged salad contains it. And I wanted it on hand to make my own salads. When visiting Colorado I was looking for some non-perishable items to send home to friends and family (like homemade jams, pickles, and condiments). Savory spice shop was listed as a store that had the items I was looking for, but when I arrived I only found the pickles. After discussion with the excellent and attentive staff it was brought to my attention that it might be for the Denver location. I enjoyed looking around the store and it looks like they offer a nice selection of gifts and spices for the home cook. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME! I walked in with a list of super esoteric spices and they had every single one in stock. A beautiful young lady (I believe her name was Sarah) helped me and she was so kind and helpful. Perhaps I am jaded, but I always expect the young people to give me the stink eye over their kombucha, but, no. She came right up to me, asked how she could help me, took my crazy list, and started filling up baggies. The staff is always patient, friendly, and helpful. The staff encourages you to pour a small amount of spice from the sample bottles onto your finger tip to taste. After you taste, they tell you to brush your fingers off allowing the excess spice to gently float to the floor which creates a wonderful olfactory experience! I experienced some of the best customer service today. I had ordered a gift set through online store. When it arrived, a bottle was smashed. Noting the closeness of Christmas, I knew I couldn't contact the website and get a replacement in time for Christmas, so I went into the bricks and mortar downtown. And the best part is, they don't sell that 'Grill Mates' garbage here, they make it themselves! Savory Spice Shop is a MUST visit if you are a foodie, a wanna-be Iron Chef, or just love to cook. Far and away the largest selection of spices I've ever seen. Plus it smells incredible. I took some friends to Savory Spice when they were visiting from Cali, they couldn't stop finding more things they wanted. They are even going to order from home now. Love going into the store. It's a fun place to browse if you are a foodie or home cook. The offered spices are diverse, and I am pretty happy with the quality. I like that most of the spices can be purchased in both seed and powder forms. Savory Spice's prices are pretty competitive, you might be able to find cheaper on some of the spices in grocery stores, but overall, I'm happy with my purchases. I personally would like to see them start selling dried chilis. They keep just as well as most spices and are used in a lot of dishes. This is the one area that I think they are missing out on, and it makes me seek out other businesses. If I need an ancho or pasilla chili for a dish, as well as some spices, I'm only looking at Savory Spice as a backup option. This isn't a complaint on the store, but more of an FYI for Savory Spice Shop. My one complaint and what cost them a star is for the store is their customer service for online ordering. I messed up on an online order, it was my fault, I had the wrong shipping address in the order, but getting help correcting the mistake was a bit of a headache. I tried calling the customer service, followed the automated instructions, and had to leave a voicemail to call me back and explained my issue as it was after hours. I also decided to call my local Savory Spice Shop as they were still open that day, but unfortunately, they cannot adjust online orders. The staffer did say she would send an email to try and get fixed. I wasn't too upset about this, as I could see the company's leadership wanting in-store employees focused on in-store customers, and the employee was accommodating. Up until this point, I am not disgruntled as the issue is my fault and one in-store employee has been helpful. So here is where I do fault Savory Spice Shop. I called, dialed the correct department, and could never get a person to answer or call me back when leaving a voicemail. I think I left two separate voicemails and called in total five times trying to get someone. Eventually I gave up trying to get the "Existing Order," department and selected "New Order," hoping to just get a person to transfer me to someone who could help me. Apparently, this is the correct method of getting help, because I got a person after one ring and they were able to resolve my issue quickly and with minimal effort. It's just frustrating that trying to get help on an existing sale was getting no response but making them think I could be another sale got me help instantly. Also, I never received an email or phone call back from the voicemails. So, my Lessons Learned for everyone out there is if you must call Savory Spice Shop's 888 number, ignore the instructions and hit 1. read more

My wife bought me a four pack of spice tubes for Christmas. One of the employees put four "different" tubes in a bag. When she got home she realized that the store employee put two sets of two of the same spices in the bag. When we attempted to exchange two duplicate spices today, we were told we could not exchange them because they are considered food and that we could buy the two we should have originally received at a reduced price. Extremely poor customer service given that it was their mistake. Will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

Okay, yelpers, I don't usually like to brag, but I am about to. I was the first to yelp the original Savory Spice in Denver, which now has 71 reviews with an average of 5 stars. Here is my original review, which still applies to SSS Colorado Springs: "This locally owned spice shop is absolutely amazing! They have all kinds of hard-to-find spices, as well as the standards, at prices cheaper than the grocery store. They grind many in store. You can buy spices in quantities as small as the 1/2 oz. They also have a lot of yummy blends. If you ever cook anything, you MUST visit Savory Spice." After shopping at Savory once you will find there's absolutely no reason to buy spices anywhere else. You can refill the bottle you already have with some fresh spices by buying a small packet or you can buy spices in a glass bottle that will last forever (I recommend the bottle for spices you will keep for a while because the gritty spices eventually wear out the plastic bags). All your regular favorites are here (did I mention cheaper than the grocery store?), as well as a lot of delicious blends and specialty items. In fact, I'm having a Savory breakfast right now: plain yogurt with toppings that include candied ginger, and coffee topped with Spiced Vanilla Bean Sugar. Yumm! read more

The selection of spices is down right RIDONCULOUS! In the best ways of course... The staff is super friendly! They are willing to help you pick out new flavors or blends if you'd like, but they also know how to leave you alone so you can taste all the ammmmazzzzzing herbs, seasonings, salts, curries, blends, cheese powders, honey powder, etc.... without feeling like a weirdo. I bought the Groupon, and decided that I would make the trip down to the Springs to visit Savory Spice Shop and use up my Groupon ... and then some. This place is AWESOME. It's a cute little shop in downtown Colorado Springs, the owners/staff are awesome, and their merchandise is fabulous. I was in heaven the whole time I was there. On the back counter, they also had a little food sample thing going on -- curries and popcorn and dips. It was very nice. Everything is nicely organized, and I like that they knew so much about the spices and could recommend which to buy, what to do with it, etc. It was also really nice that they had little smellers/tasters out for you to check. They have some really awesome things -- the standard spices (the parsley, the red pepper flakes, etc), then some fancier things (curry mixes, BBQ rubs, saffron), and then items that will rock your world like Italian Black Truffle Sea Salt. (!!!!) Like other people have said, you can get as little as 1/2 oz (but why would you?) in bags or jars for much cheaper than at the grocery store (and you're supporting local business!) Savory Spice Shop is a relatively new, long overdue addition to the Springs. They've got a lot of things that, in the past, I've had to turn to online retailers for - a wide assortment of dried chilies, finishing salts, and less-common herbs like epazote (still no achiote, though - at least, I didn't see it). Prices are about what you'd expect - good spices are never cheap. Their gift boxes are pretty cool little arrangements, though I admit I've yet to try any of their pre-mixed seasonings. A small post-script for suicidal chili-heads: this shop does carry dried Bhut Jolokia peppers (a.k.a. "Ghost Chiles"), the hottest chiles in the world. Personally, I don't hate myself enough to try one. EDIT: Jessica D. pointed out that Savory does carry annatto, which is achiote with a more gringo-friendly name. Thanks for the heads up! read more

I'm going to be simple: buying your spices in bulk means better prices (seriously, it ends up being cheaper than going to King Soopers most of the time), only getting as much or as little as you need, and fresher, higher quality products. Net results all around? - Better tasting food. Need a fraction of an ounce of some random spice for that recipe that you *know* you'll never use again? They have it. And you can buy only half an ounce of it. Need to restock your basics like cinnamon, oregano, thyme, sage, black peppercorns, etc for holidays? Buy them straight from the bins and save money by reusing your old glass containers! With this location and the ones in downtown Boulder and Denver, I believe I've been to Savory Spice at least a dozen times... and with my visit here again this past Saturday, I remembered the many reasons why! As a Colorado chain, this one in the Springs is laid out similarly to the others and its staff has always been so helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. The space is bright and airy with light-colored wood floors and streamlined displays. I love how they have samples for nearly everything, and I don't know how many bags of herbs, salts, peppercorns I've purchased to refill the bottles in my cabinet. That's the beauty of Savory Spice - you can buy as little or as much as you need rather than a 4oz McCormick's bottle when you only need half a teaspoon of something. In the back is a sink and faucet, a water cooler, paper cups, and paper towels in case you tasted or touched something that didn't react well. They stock and sell hard-to-find items, gift boxes of various seasonings, and unimagined varieties of almost anything: curries, salts, dried chilis, oil extracts, basils, oreganos, cocoas, etc. For a little fun, they named some of the products after the Fourteeners (mountains over 14,000ft) in Colorado. Very comparable prices to anything you'll find at a grocery store, though some of the more luxurious items, like the heavenly black truffle salt, will run $30+ a bottle (best is to buy a small 4oz or less bag, which will last at least a year, and add a little to your baked/mashed potatoes or fried eggs...). Savory is located on a busy block downtown, there's a lot going on around here. The impact of this place hits you before you walk in, a heavenly aroma of spices from around the world. Unlike their competition on N. Academy, Savory has "taster jars" of everything on the shelves, and they encourage you to open, smell and taste. They have pre-measured packages and jars, but you may ask to have any amount you want weighed out. The staff is very friendly with a good sense of humor and a winsome way about them. The spices are a little on the expensive side, but they are authentic. Their sections that include curries, salts, herbs, custom blends and so on are decorated with recipe cards that you are welcome to take. They also have a lot of gift sets in just about every price range. I don't have anything bad to say about Savory, and recommend it highly. I credit this place and its spices with helping me get on the show Master Chef. Their spices are top of the line, fresh, and amazingly yummy. I won't use any other spices anymore. The blends they carry are unique and perfect for many situations. The staff and owners are super friendly. They're genuinely interested in the well-being of their customers. Who'd have ever thought that a town as backwater as ours could have such a wonderful spice shop? I thought I found Foodie Nirvana when I first walked in, and purchased a stock of spices for my home, as well as several well thought out gift boxes for Christmas gifts. They have whole sections of cinnamons (real cinnamon, not just cassia), chocolate blends, curries, rubs, herbs, extracts, and much more. They sample their fare and offer recipes and tips. Ambiance: This is such a great place, with all the spices neatly and sensibly organized along the wall by type. Most spices are in bulk, and you have the clerk measure out how much you need. I like that they will label each bag, and note the date of purchase, which helps you know how long a particular spice has been in your cupboard. They also have little note cards with recipes that includes their spice blends. Service: Wonderfully personable, helpful and above all knowledgeable about the product they sell. Food (Spices): I never knew what I was missing until I began to purchase my spices here. I thought by buying the high-end supermarket brands I was getting premium spices, Not so! The spices are ground fresh just days prior up in Denver (Penzey's on the other hand ship their spices in from the Mid-West). This is as fresh as it gets folks! Great varieties. Fun to sample and try different and unusual spices. I plan my at-home menu each week, and then buy just the amount of fresh spices I need on a weekly basis. Overall, this place is phenomenal. Like Lauren M said in her review, I too threw out all my grocery-store bought spices, and will now only buy spices from Savory. They had a few spices I had not even heard of. The staff is very knowledgeable about what the spices can be used for what and what ethnicity of cooking they go well with. I had no idea that Sumac could be substituted for salt (which is great- because my partner is on a low sodium diet- which pretty much means I am on a low sodium diet as well:) I also liked that they had recipe cards next to spices. The prices were a bit steep, but I didn't see a lot of traffic in the store so that may be why. I would recommend this store- but if you are more on a budget- check out Penzey's spice shop- same fresh spices- lower prices. read more

If you have a hardcore food/cooking lover in your group of friends/family you need to stop into this place. it's a win in my book. I live with a true fire eater. The girl loves spicy food and finds even the hottest hot sauce not enough burn. When it came time to get her a gift I knew it had to be the hottest damn thing on earth...and they so happened to have that thing. The ghost chilies. Not only in dried form [which is hard stuff to find] But in a sauce form. I bought the sauce for my friend and was amazed my friend not only liked it but enjoyed its flavor. The people working her are also great, they knew a lot about all the things in the shop but also had a sense of humor. I love going into places where the staff are down to earth.
