Former Delta Airlines, parked at Pinal Airpark

As you're headed along I-10, you might notice these bright colors standing out against the drab desert monochome. You might be asking, "What is that?" You won't know until you take the exit and drive the ten miles to the gate. Distances in the desert are deceiving. When you get to the end of the road, you'll find a sturdy security fence, lots of "no trespassing" and "no photography" signs but past that, a massive collection of parked planes and stacked aircraft parts. It turns out that while the Arizona desert isn't great for humans - too hot, too dry, too dusty - it's perfect for long term storage of aircraft. When they're sealed up properly, they're safe from the greatest enemy to aluminum airframes: humidity. Some of these planes have been parked here for years, waiting to be scrapped, or called back to service or sold to some other airline and flown out. Every type of aircraft is here from 747s to 737s and CRJ-200s. Lines and lines and lines, most of which you can see from the road and the rest from Google Earth. Many of them are still painted with their original livery, Delta and American, Aer Lingus and Scandinavian. Don't be discouraged by the "No photography" signs. As long as you remain on public property and outside the fence line, you're free to take as many pictures as you want. Just be absolutely sure not to trespass and to park legally. Tours are available with proper preplanning. John K's review has the email address. [Review 17505 overall - 91 in Arizona - 1023 of 2022.]

    Philippine Airlines!!

How cool is this!!! During my family's AZ vacay/road trip, my dad, kuya (older brother), and I were talking about how boneyards were present in desert climates. Little did we know that we would actually stumble upon one on the way to Tucson. Seriously, you should have seen the glimmer in my eyes when I randomly saw multiple planes in the middle of nowhere. I asked my dad to take the next exit, and behold, there were planes from ALL OVER THE WORLD! We were especially filled with pride from seeing two planes from Philippine Airlines' fleet. Wish we actually got to go on the tarmac and explore some more, but this in itself was amazing.

Just a few miles off of I-10, Pinal Airpark is definitely worth at least a brief stop. While it might not seem all that inviting, ever since Evergreen International went out of business, thus ending their lease on the property and leading to the transfer of the airport to Pinal County, the Pinal Airpark has been technically open to the public. That doesn't mean it's all that accessible. Still, everything on the east side of the ramp that isn't gated off is fair game, as it gawking over the past-their-prime beasts that are being stored or recycled. But things get better! If you get in touch with the Airpark office, you might luck out and be able to arrange a tour with the staff. They're super friendly. The tour is casual and there's no agenda. But I received a ride around the field and a chance to walk amongst some retired Queens of the Sky.

Best place to see retired commercial aircraft. Rows & rows of planes just sitting there. So peaceful and grand. There's the Flightline Grill that serves burgers and delicious BBQ stuff. Open from 10 to 1.30 pm. Pinal Air Park was voted Best Airport for 2016.

You can arrange a tour of the airpark that is amazing and free of charge. Email PinalAirPark@pinalcountyaz.gov to set this up, ideally at least 2 weeks ahead of time if not more. Roxanne drove just the two of us around the entire airfield and if you're a commercial plane nerd, this is heaven on earth: a LOT of 747's in various stages of both salvage and ready-to-fly, DC10's, 767/757, a grip of 737 max 8's that are awaiting FAA recertification. They've got something for everyone. You cannot go inside any of the planes which is not surprising, that would probably be a legal nightmare. However, we were driven right up close and personal to the planes and it's amazing how BIG the jumbos are. Really a special experience. I would recommend tipping as well because as of Dec 2019, there was NO fee of any kind for this wonderful tour. I can't recommend this enough if you're into aviation. Amazing!

One of Delta's last Boeing 747-400's to be retired. Has writing on the belly.

Being a Sunday, I figured nothing was open, but when I spoke to the front desk they were happy to hold the airplane key and leave a note for Ron, the head of maintenance to look at in the morning. I called on Monday morning to confirm and Ron said they would look at it in the next couple of hours. Before noon he called to say it was all fixed and back where I had parked it. It turned out to be a broken wire, so no additional parts were needed. I was very happy with their attitude, there willingness to work on it immediately, and the cost to repair. I didn't spend much time inside, but it is very clean, spacious and has great pilot rest area and flight planning room. I highly recommend them if you happen to be travelling through.

Also they should try power washing a few planes and letting folks see the inside of these majestic huge tankers, etc. No outside food sucked too. It should be a better menu and the food was burned etc. In any case not worth my flying out to see replicas of the space program. On the other hand the WWII exhibits are a great example of restoration and hard work.

I tried to use the Tuscon Airport Shuttle for getting between the Tuscon and Phoenix airports…read more They were great over the phone - rate was $55, but then got a $35 surcharge since they didn't have 4 passengers going. Okay, fine. They were supposed to pick me up at the short term parking lot at 12:40pm. I went out 10 minutes before the time, but couldn't find the shuttle. I waited until 12:45 and then called the main number, and they gave me the cell phone number for a driver, which went directly to voicemail. 15 minutes after my pickup time I had a call from the driver, who "ran into traffic" and would be there in 10 minutes (30 minutes late). At 45 minutes after my pickup time I called the company, who claimed they'd been calling my mobile and not gotten an answer (it was in my hand the entire time I was waiting, and the driver had been able to speak with me). At this time they stated they did not have a driver available to take me to the Phoenix airport. "We'll refund the cost" - but did nothing to get me to Phoenix. I then had to arrange to take a cab to another shuttle service in town for a different shuttle service to take me into Phoenix, losing another 45 mins. Tuscon Airport Shuttle not only lacks reliable drivers, but the management didn't know what was going on. I understand that issues arise, but their lack of professionalism was astounding for an industry that is based on time-sensitive transit and customer service.

If I could have selected no stars, I would have done that! I do not recommend this shuttle…read moreservice. Their lack of professionalism is astounding. I was scheduled to travel between Alaska and Tuscon for business. I intended to rent a car between Phoenix and Tuscon, but my coworker suggested we use this shuttle service and provided the phone number for me to make my reservation. When I called, it sounded like I was waking up whoever answered the phone, and I believe I heard dogs barking in the background. It took almost 45 minutes for me to make the reservation to and from the Phoenix airport, and at no time during this conversation was I informed that the credit card payment I authorized was non-refundable. I was informed of the surcharge if there were less than 4 people on the shuttle, and I was asked if I authorized the payment. On the day of my travel, the flights were cancelled out of Alaska (in the town I live) due to heavy snow and I could not get to Phoenix. As soon as I knew I would not make it out of Alaska, I called to cancel my reservation both to Tuscon and the return. I was informed I would get a credit that would be good for one year, but was told my payment would not be refunded. I questioned this, and they told me I was told on the phone and that the website stated that. I had not checked the website prior to that conversation, but when I checked multiple times afterwards I did not see that statement. I was told they would check their recording of my call and contact me. I have never been contacted, nor have they responded to any of the multiple emails I have sent them. If I had been informed it was nonrefundable, I would have never made the reservation to begin with. The weather in Alaska in the winter is very unpredictable and flights often get cancelled. I would have rented a car or gone with a shuttle service that was more reasonable and accommadating.
