The lobby area is welcoming and fits the woodsy/cabin theme with some cute deor. Our room was spotless and so cute. It was a fishing theme and felt so cozy. It was quiet overnight. The extra little bar sink outside the bathroom is a thoughtful addition (as is the mirror.) Our room looked out to the back with the river in sight. Lots of early morning fisherman parked in the lot but we didn't hear a thing. The bathroom was a good size and sparkling clean. Cute shower curtain with a dock/lake on it! Breakfast was serve yourself and they had a good assortment of bagels/english muffins/cereal/oatmeal/waffles. Coffee, tea, hot cocoa and milk (& maybe juice? I'm not a juice drinker). There is a pool as well as a conference center here too. They had a fireplace in the lobby plus some seating and games/books. It would be a good spot for sit if you wanted to be out of the room We'll be back to this little gem!

Up front I need to say we travel with two dogs, about 30 pounds each, mostly well behaved but, you…read moreknow, we are accustomed and happy to stay in more basic hotels that are dog friendly. That's what I expected here. But no. This treasure of a roadside inn is clean and comfortable, with an open, welcoming lobby and sitting/dining area, and each room is designed with a unique theme (we stayed in the "Music Notes" room flanked by other rooms such as "Lighthouse," "The Lodge," and "Ooh, La, La Paris.") Our music-themed room was adorned with a drum pendant light, guitars, artwork, etc., which inspired us to really look at and appreciate this space. And you know how hotels that care crisply fold the edge of the toilet paper roll? This place (in a first for me) folds edges into a rose. How cute is that? Pre-dogs, we used to stay at fine hotels, but The Four Seasons can't match this place for thoughtfulness and detail, dollar for dollar. One final note to travelers with dogs: green spaces along the River and a small neighboring park (Lions) offer a welcomed end-of-a-long drive romp for the dogs.

The only good thing, that happened to us was the receptionist, Keira. She was professional. And... on a separate note, I hope Hilton appreciates her and gives her opportunities. It's rare these days to find people who are so eager to work and help customers. The accessible room was a disaster, especially the bed. It didn't have the required 24-inch height for a person with a disability; it was only 12 inches high and of very poor quality. Breakfast was served through a nearby restaurant. The restaurant required guests to purchase the full breakfast menu to receive service. Guests couldn't just order a piece of toast and a cup of coffee like at other Hiltons. This proves once again that I'm right--read my review of Wyndham. Companies like this and others don't care about the customer; they care about how much money they make at the end of the month, and if a customer is denied a piece of toast, they don't care. There are people who can't or don't want to eat an full American breakfast. Do you understand? But no, they don't care, and on top of that, they let themselves be pushed around--or not--by a restaurant that's just a drop in the bucket compared to the Hilton's market share. But it doesn't matter; bottom line: money, and let the customer suffer. It was a disaster and poor taste.

From the moment you walk in you receive the warmth and welcome that weary people need. From Cyril to the front desk staff, you feel taken care of. The rooms are amazing for a retreat center. Yes it needs to be simple but the wood and aesthetic add to the welcome and comfortableNEss one needs on retreat. It is not austere but rather feels like a hotel in some sense...okay, more like a bed and breakfast. The views from the room are amazing. Food wise: simple and nourishing. Depending on how many folks are occupying the guesthouse can the food change...for example don't expect a full breakfast spread if there are only three retreatants. If you want an omelette head to the Ref. One thing is that the temperature in the room can't really be adjusted but that's my only gripe. But definitely always a pleasure, and always a place to rejuvenate among the nowheresness of MN.

Aesthetically, there isn't much to attract at the St. John's Abbey Guesthouse. The architecture and…read moredecor is plain, concrete, and un-beautiful. Yet, the purpose is meant to draw you to look at your surroundings - the woods, the lake, and the beautiful campus that makes up St. John's University. Personally, I've been less than pleased with my experience here. The retreat was much less than I expected, the food wasn't too impressive, the building lacks the kind of warmth one expects to find at a retreat facility. It's not a place that I'd long to return to. However, I did take advantage of prayer with the monks at the nearby Abbey Church. I'd have to say that that was a highlight of my time here.

The rooms are very quiet, clean and scent free. The beds were firm but very comfortable. There's a nice pool that's well maintained and kept at a usable temperature. The staff was extremely nice and very efficient. The continental breakfast was a step above average. The dining area was clean and the selection of food was just right. I like that they had some great additions for children, and really aren't we all children at heart? There was a waffle making machine/station which my wife used with the help of the lady who was supervising, cleaning and restocking the area. They had a nice selection of breads and bagels with a toaster. There was also some biscuits and gray with sausage crumbles that you could add if you like. My favorite was the scrambled eggs with smoked kielbasa's on the side. There were little single serve peanut butter and jelly containers as well as butter. There was a refrigerator with fruit yogurt, milk, packages with two hard boiled eggs and for the children there was a fruit cup, apple sauce cup, Brekkies (a soft chocolate chip, oat and flax) cookie and last but not least Uncrustables. There was also single serve cereal containers ranging from mini-wheats to fruit loops. 24 hour coffee service was always spot on. All in all we had a very nice stay at a warm and friendly Inn.

I was up on the third floor so hopped the elevators and headed up. Elevator arrived and operated in the normal amount of time - so all good. Room was nicely appointed and clean. Bathroom was good sized, well lit and functional. Hot water was hot. There is a large indoor pool available, but I did not have the time to do anything there. They offer a free breakfast in the morning but to be honest, it was very basic. Coffee was decent however. The building is situated on the edge of a strip mall and there is an Italian sports bar there if you feel the need to grab something to eat and watch the game.
