Antiques on High has the proper smell of old things and has an interesting range of antiques. Rather than focusing on big pieces of furniture, which so many antique shops do, it uses its space wisely to host: Jewellery, books, records, clothes, ornaments, pictures, maps and various collectables. The condition of the goods varies, but they're priced fairly reasonably. I find it's best to go in without the aim of buying something in particular, but just to browse. I can't say anything has ever caught my eye enough to want to buy it, but I've seen plenty of other people who have found the perfect addition to their home or the ideal gift. The best bit is the craft section, where there's a gallery of jewellery, leather, pottery, glass and art in general, all produced locally and all promising to be valuable antiques in the future. There's a great range in here and you can get something for less than a pound or spend hundreds of pounds. Equally, you can pop in for a few minutes or spend hours browsing - it's almost like a mini museum. If you like antique shops, this won't disappoint; if you've never been in one, try approaching it. Don't be put off by the prison-like bars in the windows; the staff are friendly and it's a different world inside.

This incredible shop is pretty much the Narnia of antiques. The shop front is only small, a modest…read morestandard size from the entrance, but boasts a hoard of items within. In the first section that you enter stands a whole host of tall glass cabinets, holding a number of gorgeous costume and antique jewellery items, medallions coins and other paranphenalia. As you move slowly through to the back, where begins the labyrinth, the rooms and corridors all fully packed with trinkets become apparent. Larger items are stacked -from boating bits, fire place accessories, old lamps, candle stands and more - throughout the space. There are rooms full of books and photographs, pictures and frames. Rooms full of furniture, some of which was utterly divine, some of which was ridiculously cheap. Rooms with clothing, rooms with knick-knacks, treasure boxes and more than I could possibly investigate as we were pushed on time during my visit. I wanted to delve further in, but alas my Dad was getting antsy and bored (no doubt hungry for lunch!), so we didn't get to explore the full maze of delights. It truly felt like I could just keep wandering further in, ever lost in a delightful old building, forever gazing at the antiquities and curiosities. I need to come back here, soon.

I shop here for antique gifts for friends and family, and the owners are always helpful and knowledgeable. Very reasonable prices too. The Antique Centre is not quite what it used to be, but the Jays Nest is reason enough to pop in if you're looking for unusual gifts that have some history!

I would have to have genetic modification to stop my clumsiness though and, as the lady looking after the shop pointed out, I probably wouldn't want to do the dusting! A two-storey treasure trove of vintage items but displayed with finesse. I came looking for some champagne saucers and the lady was very helpful in showing me some (the wrong decade for me, but they were beautiful Edwardian cut glass). The prices are astonishingly reasonable verging on cheap so if you like quality items in your home and kitchen then I highly recommend coming here and finding bits and bobs.
