During these hard times, we always hear of school districts cutting back in Sports and the Arts...not here. They really value everything, which they should, and it just enriches the students' experience....albeit a short one, it will be truly memorable. And speaking of the Arts, they have a great Band Teacher, Mentor, Conductor and Person in Mr. Servantez. He took this program and made these students from Daly City dream big. By big, I mean nationwide. For two years running now, he has taken these kids and competed with other bands from middle schools not just in the Bay Area and California, but in the entire United States. And guess what? They have taken the Gold Rating for two years in a row. Oh yes, all the kids, parents and students in Daly City were cheering and supporting them on during their competition in a far far away place called Fremont. And yes, we represented, and we were the loudest. This school have their priorities in order. Oh, can you tell by this review that my kids go here?

Some of the low reviews you see here seem to be confusing locations. This is not the only Kumon…read moreCenter in Daly City, CA. But other reviews you see here are most likely those of disgruntled lazy former students who did not take full advantage of the program. Trust me, I would know from experience... I was a Serramonte Kumon Math and Reading student since I was four years old and did it for twelve years, and started working there as a teaching assistant since I was a Sophomore in high school. As a young Serramonte Kumon student, I honestly only did Kumon because my parents forced me to. They thought that it would be a great program for me to enrich my skills in Math and Reading and to get an academic jumpstart before starting Kindergarten. The Kumon curriculum consists of step-by-step packets, which guide students through the basics and fundamentals of Math and Reading. Kumon starts kids at levels in which they are comfortable, whether they are at, above, or below grade level. The program also consists of constant repetition until the child has mastered certain mathematical procedures before progressing into higher levels of mathematics. The Reading program also works the same way, by introducing children to basic phonics, reading and comprehension skills, vocabulary, grammar, essay writing, and more. Everyday, I'd grudgingly do my Kumon worksheets and loathed the constantly repetitive work load. But despite my flippant attitude towards the program, I consistently did my work until I reached higher mathematical levels, such as Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus. Later, I found myself breezing through all of my math and reading assignments throughout elementary, middle, and high school. I got excellent grades in Math and Reading and never ceased to impress my teachers. Some of my teachers even asked me to assist my peers who were struggling in my classes. This was when I realized how much Kumon has given me a great foundation in Math and Reading, despite my negative attitude towards it when I was younger. Now, as a Serramonte Kumon teaching assistant, I feel like I understand where most of the kids are coming from because I used to be in their position. Sure, Kumon isn't exactly the most exciting program or activity because it revolves around academics, but it helped me a lot. I later realized that without Kumon, I would have been struggling horribly in school and would mostly be getting bad grades. I probably would be a college kid who doesn't even know basic algebra. And let's admit it, there are a lot of college students out there who still struggle in academics. Kumon honestly helps students in the long run. Serramonte Kumon TA's are very personal, kind, and enthusiastic in teaching students. The Serramonte Kumon Staff genuinely cares about each family and does its best to cater to each student's individual needs. As an experienced Serramonte Kumon student and TA, I highly recommend the Kumon program and the Serramonte Kumon location.

This is a review for Pace's mandarin immersion summer camp that my child attended for 3 weeks…read moreduring the summer of 2017. It was probably a bit much for any child to sit in a much smaller-than-expected classroom for a whole day for 3 weeks, but the educational themes sounded promising so we did it anyway. Unfortunately a few days into camp she came home telling us that there was a group of kids and their teacher who speak english in the same room including one child who would have fits and shout "bad words" all the time. When I brought this up to Jason, he told us that they take kids with special needs in additional to trying to run a mandarin immersion camp. While I think it's great that they were willing to take children with special needs, it's not particularly effective to put those 2 groups each with very distinct needs into a small, one-room space (the room looked to be about 450 sq ft max). Moreover, I was particularly frustrated when no action was taken to stop the obscenities (my child probably learned as much obscenities in english as she did chinese in those weeks). Each time Jason was informed that yet again, today was another day with foul language disrupting camp, his only response would be "I apologize for the foul language and have spoken with the teachers and parents about it. If the foul language does not stop, the camp will have to take appropriate needed steps as it violates our camp's code of conduct. We appreciate your patience and understanding as our camp tries to be inclusive." Perhaps we were too patient and understanding, as apparently no action was ever taken since the behavior continued throughout. This place was truly regrettable and I wish we could have taken our child out after that first week and spared her the obnoxious behavior she and the others were subjected to.

I would highly recommend him. -- I had studied Spanish for a few years in high school (20+ years ago), but had effectively forgotten everything. While on vacation in Mexico City in December, I decided that I wanted to learn Spanish again once I got home to San Francisco. So, I researched Spanish classes, Spanish schools, private Spanish tutors, etc. -- and felt overwhelmed by choice. However, in reviewing José's info, I found him to be uniquely qualified and decided to engage with him. Several aspects stood out in my decision making process: - Formal education (MA in Applied Linguistics, DELE examiner) - Track record and solid reviews on Yelp and HelloSpanish - Educated in both Spain and Mexico (able to teach geographic nuance of Spanish) - A logical website that made it clear he understood how students want to learn - Competitive pricing - Online platform to book classes, pay, etc. - Very responsive Since the first class, the experience has been fantastic -- José is disarming, friendly, patient, and supportive; but, he also holds you accountable to grow, learn, and progress. He spent the first class getting a sense of my current level and desired objectives -- and, from there, tailored a plan to help me advance. José is very organized and helps you keep focus to be able to progress in a logical, methodical manner. Classes are fun, topics are relevant, and the experience feels personalized. I'm just about to complete my third month of classes with José and am thrilled with the progress that I've made in this short time. Learning a language can be a scary and daunting task, I'm happy to have José guiding me along the way!

When I started taking lessons with Jose, I had only done Duo Lingo Spanish and had several years of French to help/hinder my comprehension of Spanish. In just the first month of lessons, I was able to go from not understanding any spoken Spanish (but being ok with reading menus) to being able to understand amounts and tell taxi drivers addresses correctly. With Jose's patience, I can now have basic conversations with native speakers and don't feel totally lost when navigating through Mexico.
