I had my first experience in 2024 with JESD as a parent and decided to apply for a transfer for my child, first to another school in district and then to a school out of district. The JESD staff were all extremely kind and helpful. I was diligent in getting enrolled first in the assigned home school, being early to apply for transfer, meeting all deadlines and following all rules to ensure our child's best chance at acceptance. We received notice from JESD that our application to attend the specified school out of district was approved on this end and being forwarded to the other district. We (wrongly) understood that this was our application and all the paperwork was filed on time and that we would be notified if accepted to the school we listed on our application. This application was actually ONLY for the permit you need to attend out of district. None of our enrollment information at the home school was forwarded or used for application to the transfer. When it came time to hear about acceptance to the out of district school we thought we applied to, the other district had no record of us applying...because nowhere in any of the material or correspondence did JESD mention the critical information that in addition to the permit you need for your child to attend school out of district, you also have to apply separately to the district you want to attend... This is our first child attending grade K...you could argue user error, but the way the correspondence regarding the permit went, it misled us to think that in itself was us "applying" to the out of district school. We have now missed the early applications to the other district and are now attempting to squeeze into the third and fourth rounds of applications, but thought everything was taken care of...just a bit frustrated and disappointed. Hoping for the best. Hoping this feedback helps JESD and other parents, as the district could be much more clear about this on its website, in its mailed correspondences and communication from staff--simply say that the application for out of district transfer is a permit ONLY and that it is up to the parent to investigate application policies, deadlines, and apply separately to the other district to be considered for enrollment.

The diversity of the people in this district is amazing. My 2 older kids graduated in Oceana and I have a child that is still in Westlake Elementary. I am very happy with this school district and I commend the educators for a job well done as my children are thriving for excellence because of the school's support. If America can spend millions of dollars in buying ammunition, why can't it be spent on better education. Overall, I give this district a 5 star as it deserves it.

This school used to be called Colma Middle School (my first year there), until the principal…read moreretired, and then, it was renamed after him. I went to this school (6th grade to 8th grade- 1987 was my graduating year, so yes, it's been quite a while) and so did my younger sister. Middle school is rough, though. This could be the most awkward stage/school during those teenage years (raging hormones, girls have their periods, so they are boy crazy, really caring about your hair looked, peer pressure, the wanting/needing to belong, etc.). Add bullies to the mix, and you get the picture. (I didn't do anything to anyone, but I had haters, which I handled on my own. In life, you just have to face them head on, and then, that's when one gets a tougher skin and it ended up being the source of my strength, because I ended up standing up for myself. It just happened earlier than I expected. Bullies come in all forms today- trolls on the internet, co-workers, etc. The issue of bullies needs attention. I think that all the adults should step in and help all those victimized by bullies.) As for Academics, I rather enjoyed my time here. I had good teachers (Mr. Robinson, Mr. Tooth, Ms. Orri (PE) to name a few) for the most part. I participated in the assemblies, fundraisers, had good grades (Honor Roll), and I also had a good amount of friends. I thought that the curriculum was challenging enough to foster the curiosity and learning new things was exciting. But I have always been a lover of research. Remember when we had to look it up at the library or go to the encyclopedia collection? I loved the grounds of the school (there was a field which was higher than the school). It's pretty big. I also went to Fernando Rivera one summer for Summer School (I elected to go because I didn't want to be bored), which was smaller, I thought. Maybe the paint colors could have been more exciting, but that is a budget call. Just to give you an idea how it was in the 80s. The fashion prints were geometrics (also popular in Trapper Keepers), the pastel colors were popular too, but neon colors were also popular too, the style of jeans were skinny jeans, lace was a popular fabric because of Madonna, fitted pencil skirts, crimped hair, lightened hair, tall hair requiring lots of Aqua Net hairspray and huge hoop earrings. The department stores of the time were Macy's, Montgomery Ward, Mervyn's, Emporium Capwell, Sear's, and JCPenney. Many of those stores were at Serramonte. This school was quite a ways from my house in Daly City, so I took a bus everyday. I would walk part of the way, most days, too. While I enjoyed my time here minus the bullies, I opted to attend Oceana High School in Pacifica instead of Jefferson High in Daly City, where my brother and cousins attended.

It's not just a Catholic school, it is like a second family. Families know other families even if they're not in the same class. The friendship between kids and families extend outside of the school. The staff are nice and the school has a NEW principal who is very hands on, transparent, and who listens to students and parents. OLPH is almost 100 years old and still serving the community. It is academically competitive and at the same time gives the kids a good Catholic foundation. I highly recommend OLPH School!

Most of my experiences were mediocre…read more In sixth grade there was a lot of drama and multiple people were getting accused of things that they didn't do which made school a lot stressful. Also the instruction wasn't the greatest since in science class, I learned nothing (especially 7th grade since the teacher didn't teach and many students were being very disrespectful towards her) and in 8th grade science, the instruction wasn't that good since there wasn't a set curriculum. I wish the school had an accelerated math program where at the beginning of sixth grade, you take a test and if you pass, then you would be placed in math 7 and in 7th grade, you would be in math 8 and in 8th grade, you would be in algebra 1. This was because many students including me were complaining that math was way too easy while other people were clearly struggling. It wasn't beneficial for there to be a huge knowledge gap. PE curriculum was pretty good and it motivated students to try harder and the people there were nice for the nice part, but there were cliques and the popular students were mean and bullied people who weren't popular. Most of the english teachers were good and they motivated you to do well. My personal favorites were Mrs. Dequina and Ms. Handy since their assignments were challenging, but reasonable, forcing me to push myself, which helped me in high school. The electives could be better but I graduated 8 years ago so I wouldn't now what it's like now.

The Nigerian Priest sucks. My family and I occupied a Mass on Monday. My Uncle's Funeral. When we are all mourning, this guy spent 5-10 minutes ranting about how a lot of us don't go to church and that we need to go to church more often, and not just for baptism and when someone dies. He clearly had an agenda. It wasn't encouraging at all... this mass was a really big disappointment during a time of loss and mourning. Dear Father. How dare you accuse us of not going to church. Just because we don't go to Holy Angels daily, doesn't mean anything. Just because you don't see us, doesn't mean anything. We all go to church. We all go to different churches. When you spent 5-10 minutes talking about it, instead of saying something nice for my uncle, You lost a lot of respect from all of us. Church is suppose to be welcoming of all people, and not just of one faith. We are all mourning and you delivered a mass that was intended for the general audience and not for a family that lost an Elder member. Everyone at that mass was there for my uncle. You ruined it for us all. My uncle deserved better for his ceremony. To the Nigerian priest. We don't believe you should be a Priest. You're not a good one nonetheless. Holy Angels keeping you on board is terrible for our church. You lack empathy. You lack the ability to read the room. You lack knowledge the ability of understand the neighborhood. To anyone looking for a Priest to offer a funeral ceremony to a loved one, don't go to this guy. Find a local church and hand pick your priest if possible. Don't allow this guy to ruin a proper funeral ceremony.

She learned to read in TK, and is doing "above average" in the curriculum testing. She's learned a lot, and the community at HA is very diverse and welcoming. I would definitely recommend HA. It's tightknit and if your child does better in a smaller class, HA offers this. We originally tried another Catholic school walking distance to our house, but my husband and several family members attended that school in the past and had issues with bullying during their time there. We enrolled our child for preschool at the other school and were not fond of the lack of communication. Sister Merle's communication with us for HA preschool was very consistent and timely, which was why we decided to transition to HA, and now looking back, we made the right choice. We also have made friends and become close with the other parents in our class, which is awesome.

We're deeply grateful for how the school has supported, nurtured, and challenged each of them. The head of school is outstanding, and the teachers and staff are exceptional. We came for the academics and stayed for the school's commitment to developing thoughtful, self-aware, and engaged citizens. Hilldale's core habits of leadership, respect, and independent lifelong learning are woven into every aspect of the experience. The curriculum is well balanced, with strong emphasis not only on STEM, but also on humanities, arts, music, ethics, and global citizenship. Some of our favorite traditions include the Young Authors Project, the Harvest Feast, the Winter Music Concert, and the International Fair, which celebrates cultures from around the world. We've also appreciated how thoughtfully the school meets each child's individual needs. One of our children received early support and accommodations for a learning difference, even before a formal diagnosis, and is now thriving alongside his peers. Another was moved ahead in a subject to ensure he was adequately challenged. Throughout, communication with us as parents has been clear and collaborative. Our oldest is sad to say goodbye after starting in kindergarten, but she leaves well prepared for the transition to high school. We can't thank the Hilldale team enough for their dedication to our children's growth over the years.
